hi all :) i just bought some land for the first time. and i already have a squater way above me above the clouds. that means he uses my prims right?? also i contacted the owner of the sim but she is not on line right now so i thought i would come in here and get some advice. how can i get rid of him and once i do is there some kinda security system i can install so i dont have to keep flying up and checking to make sure no one else is squating ? :(

For dealing with such, use the land control 'autoreturn' feature - if you click on the parcel description at the top of your screen, I believe it is in the objects tab.

Set it to five minutes or suchlike and the problems will go away.

Also, if it's group land, remember to use your group tag - or autoreturn might return your own prims.

Best of luck!

Just set auto-return to something non-zero. Then "squatters" are no longer a problem. No security needed.

If you can't do this (which is really unlikely), ask your sim owner to stop being a bubblehead and set up their land properly so their renters can make use of the land tools.

Without telling you about Autoreturn, and having you return your entire parcel by mistake...

try click ABOUT LAND and in there you can remove the ability to CREATE OBJECTS and OBJECT ENTRY.

But I type slow! It's just the coffee...

If you see someone you want to go 'bye bye' click on him, say 'more' or suchlike on the pie menu, and select 'freeze'.

Then decorate the avatar, and snapshot to flickr...

Hmm.

That's a bit evil. You might just try an IM and say hello?

I have this vague feeling you might not have actually bought land. Are you "paying tier" to another resident, rather than to SL, by any chance?

If the parcel lists you as the owner...

...delete the stuff. Goes into trash with no notification. heehee.

You're confusing a few things.

If you are owner of a group you can use the first tab of World > About Land and "set your land to group" which means that members of your group will be able to put things on your property without fear of autoreturn. In order for this to work, you have to actually be wearing your group tag while you put your goodies out on your land. (I think it's Edit > Groups > select group > Activate.)

To make it so only you and group members can rez items, you go to the World > About Land > Options and disable the create objects option for "All Residents" and leave "Group" enabled.

To get rid of the crap the person's already put down, go to World > About Land > Objects, and click the Refresh button to see a list of people and their objects. Select the offender's name and then use the Return feature to send his objects back to inventory.

I have some squatters too. I got a good deal on a large roadside parcel that wasn't in a *too* destroyed area so I bought it and was going to do something with it eventually but never have, just put some trees and plants up. I forgot about it for awhile, TP'd over there last month and checked the about land...I forgot to turn on auto return and it showed 250 or so prims being used. Flew up and found a nice looking skybox all furnished and cozy. I was going to return it all but was in a nice mood at the time and just sent an IM. She IMed me back later that evening asking if she could rent the land if I wasn't using it. I just let her stay. No rent. I wasn't using it. So...thats my squatter story. I'm a pushover sometimes I guess.

Can you delete other people's stuff or does it just go back to their inventory? That would be one way to discourage squatters, if you could just make their stuff disappear permanently.

I was under the impression that only the asset servers can make other people's stuff disappear permanently.

I agree with Ordinal. I think, based on the way the OP phrased his post, that he didn't buy land. He may think he bought it, but he's probably renting it, in which case, he might have to wait until the landowner comes online and gets her stuff together enough to eject the squatters and their garbage.

I wish there was some way to stop landowners from telling people that they are "buying" land when they are actually renting it.

It goes into their trash, without notification. If they empty their trash without looking, buhbye.

in the same screen that turns auto-return on....

click the "objects" button
go down and click "refresh"
under it will be a list of everyone who has objects there.
click the name of the offender
while it is highlighted, go just above and find the "return" button
click this and all his stuff goes POOF while yours stays put! :D

autoreturn is evil-ugly business if you don't know what you are doing.

Interesting. If you right click on the land and click "about land" it shows you as the owner, but you're paying tier to the sim owner?

I'm assuming the sim owner isn't Linden Lab (kidding).

If you own the land, you pay your monthly tier to Linden Lab, and it would have cost you a lot more than 1L to buy, even for a very small piece of land, so I assume you are renting. I can't imagine the owner would have actually transferred the land into your name, though, because she would have no recourse if you just stopped paying tier. It should show her or a group as the owner; probably a group.

Sometimes owners will "sell" residents a parcel of land by making them pay a big upfront fee, then collect the monthly tier from them. It's an unfair practice as far as I'm concerned because it completely misrepresents the nature of the transaction. When you buy land, you need to make sure that you are actually buying it. I'm not saying your landlord did anything wrong here - just that an unfortunate number of landowners are less than honest in their dealings with other residents - especially new residents.

All island land is essentially rental; you pay the island owner, the island owner pays Linden Lab. There are different business models... since you only paid L$1 for the land, yours is a pure rental, in that you paid no real purchase price, and you won't be able to re-sell the land to someone else.

Other estates charge an up-front fee but give you the right to re-sell to others when you decide to move away... but it's still a rental at the end of the day. Hell, mainland "ownership" is just renting from Linden Lab, anyway.

yes if i open objects after about land.. it says owner = jack meridith under group it says nothing.. but if i dont pay my tier it states i will lose the land . so it is actually renting i suppose :)

yes, it is only renting. you can be booted out at any time, with no reason or explanation from the land owner, and LL will do nothing to intervene and assist. that's jsut the way it is. and it happens all the time.

It's really not _that_ great a risk. For every person screwed over by a sim owner, hundreds get at least acceptable service.

If you like where you are, and the landlord seems OK, take the chance. If you paid nothing upfront, all you are risking is each months tier. I lived on a private estate for a year and it was a wonderful experience, preferable, for me than when I owned mainland.
