whats wrong with banking @ internet cafe's, they SHOULD be secure by law over here
The bank, or the internet cafe? Just because your bank's website is "secure" doesn't mean those around you while you log in have your best interests at heart. Keyloggers and packet sniffers are easy enough to find, I bet
also i think the person knows i am using his connection, he "Messaged" me using a windows dialog box type message and said i can use his connection, just dont leave it downloading torrents
If he can message you like that, then he can also likely get into other parts of your laptop. In short, your connection is *not* safe and you do run the risk of a security breach on your network. I would strongly suggestin avoiding the use of anything you wish to keep private while on that network -- and to not store passwords, credit or debit card numbers, or other sensitive date on your system. This is not an SL issue: thisis a personal security issue.
Bear in mind, too, that just as you could connect into that open network, so could any of your other neighbors. Would you trust anyone within range of this open network with your debit card number? Right now, you are. That is a VERY dangerous game for you to be playing.
the reason i am concerned is that when they make the RC veiwer the mandatory one what am i to do for my SL fix?
You may find yourself with a problem, then. Just like I can't use my Apple 512k and 300 bps Volksmodem to connect to SL, so will you find your piggybacked 2MBytes connection unable to access SL. At that point, you essentially have two options:
1. Find a way to upgrade your own system. As a mandatory version of what is now the RC is a while away (at least, LL has indicated they are not dropping 1.19 support for Some Time Now), one may hope you'll find yourself in a better overall position at that time, and be able to simply use a legitimate, unpiggybacked, high-speed connection. Or you'll have come up with some other solution; or,
2. Stop using Second Life. LL is under *no* obligation to support *any* particular system/connection/hardware/etc. While LL did, IMO, do their best to support as many systems with 1.20, there are many on SL now who have issues with it and cannot use it for whatever reason. If you end up in a situation where your connection is simply not good enough to run it in LL's eyes -- regardless of anything else you can connect to with your connection, or how good you feel it might be -- then you will be left out in the cold.
