http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/09/28/virtual.tokyo.ap/index.htmlThis will be a place where people can enjoy themselves with a sense of safety -- like Disneyland," he said. "There's total freedom to act in 'Second Life,' which requires individual responsibility. It's very American. Almost everything is OK, including evil." This bothers me..im an AMERICAN..and altho i have no problem with adult activities..im NOT EVIL~!

"Some people say 'Second Life' isn't that fun for Japanese, who tend to be group-oriented and passive, although it works for aggressive personalities," he said.
These are the quotes from this particular news article im referring to..they are referring to Americans as aggressive and evil..and it seems that SL, therefor is an evil place and Japanese ppl arent having fun in SL. So I guess I've been in the dark, I really didnt know us "Americans" were referred to as evil and agressive.

Inappropriate Historical Reference Alert: Yes, agressiveness is a uniquely American Trait, totally alien to Japan. I'm sure The Koreans, among others will agree. This really was a bit gratuitous, wasn't it?

Interesting...ya, hmm...I wonder why we Americans are considered violent and evil. Jeez, you know, I'm racking my brain, but I...can't put my finger on it. So, they want to create a 'G' rated version, other than the Teen Grid...because they want to be around adults...but want nothing to do with anything adult. Will this new J-SL be cell-shaded?

there are a lot of definite Japan-philles around , especially amoung bloggers, etc.
It has become the most hyped and least accurately pictured country on earth.
America being portrayed a warmongering dictatorship run by bible thumpers being a close second.

The guy that started this Japanese 'everything is ok in our garden now', would he be perhaps the grandson of the owner of a Chip Shop in Horishima?
Smells of jealousy, given the perceived freedom available in the West against the indoctrination of a repressed society, or one that perhaps perceives itself to be disadvantaged?

I think you are over thinking it. I think the author just has an agenda - and painting the US as sexually kinky and violent was part of it. The pre-school content stereotypes of people in Japan just fit that agenda. The Author is probably in America - Its an AP story with no by line.

/me yawns
This is really good marketing on the part of this new virtual world, sharp differentiation between itself and SL, so that it does not have to compete on the basis of features (tottery tho SL is, it is definitely a feature-rich world).
And creating a nationalistic spin, so as to get a huge block of Japanese players to at least try it, at least as a place to which they can point teens, less computer-literate family members, and those without any english. Great marketing, gets a quick burst of users. If they get to be big enough, they can add non-PG zones later.
I think we should be careful not to stereotype the Japanese as being in line with this marketing spin. I see a lot of katakana chat nowadays, Tokyo seems thriving inworld, and I doubt Bare Rose and the rapidly growing fab Japanese hair industry are going anywhere.

Well, that is fairly accurate at the moment, but they should check back in 13 months and we'll see if we can fix that
