Is anyone else experiencing the WORST lag ever? Ive never seen it this bad, and just wondering if something happened to my computer.
Its been going on for a few days now, have tried EVERY viewer, even have my settings on lowest everything, and it takes me 20 mins to even get my camera right to take a picture.
Can anyone give me good cam settings and maybe some tips on improving the lag? If there is any tips..sighs..I played around with my camera settings until I think I messed them up totally..now if i ctrl alt, the camera goes wackky..lol
Yes, clean cache every log in/out. So not that..and updated vid drivers also. I really feel like egging the Linden office!

Some information about your computer system and your settings in SL might be useful.
You could copy and past the Help / About Second Life section of system info, for example. The usual, type of processor, operating system, amount of ram, type of video card, amount of video ram, and so on.
Possibly you have something set badly in your settings.xml file. You could delete that file so things would return to default values.
What is your bandwidth limit set to? Preferences, Network, Maximum Bandwidth
What is your Disk Cache Size? Preferences, Network, Disk Cache Size
What is your Draw Distance? Preferences, Graphics , Draw Distance
What kind of internet service do you have? Cable, DSL, etc.
Are you using a wireless network?
Do you share a networked connection with other SL users?
What kind of Anti-virus software?
What other anti-malware software do you use?
Do you use an "ISP hider" to try to protect privacy when using filesharing programs?
Have you tried using the Stats display to see if you can find any cause for the problem?
Could you make a video that shows the problem in action and upload it so people can see firsthand exactly what it looks like from your point of view?

Does it matter what sim you are in? How are things if you are in a "void" sim, or a normal sim with practically nothing in it?
The 5200 card is pretty weak these days. Have you opened your computer box and checked that your fans are free of dust and spinning freely? You might buy a can of compressed air and blow it out with that, focusing on the fans. It could be that the card is starting to wear out.
It looks like you have an AGP video card, which means an older computer. The AGP bus is obsolete now. Video card upgrade offerings for the AGP bus are limited. However they do still exist, and you can find new ones at newegg.com . If you are thinking in the position to upgrade your computer, a failing AGP card might be a good sign that the time is ripe. If it turns out your card is bad, you could find a used video card on ebay of comparable or better specs as the 5200 for very little. Before buying a new video card you would want to determine what your power supply wattage is. It's probably quite low, not big enough to support much better of a video card.
You said you are using a wireless connection. Can you try it wired, if that is an option?
Control shift 1 makes the stats display appear. I'm not that good at interpreting the display myself. Hopefully someone else can appear with detailed instructions on what to look for.
I'm not sure if you are having video lag or network lag or if your computer is otherwise bogged down.
The about section didn't determine what your processor is. Could you try the Windows System Information and see what it says? Or My Computer, right click, properties, or some such? I'm just wondering if it's a Sempron or what.

You have a 1M DSL connection and your bandwidth is maxed at 500K in SL. Try maxing that out for a couple of sessions. That should help (it did for 2 of my friends who were having lag problems.) If you experience a-lot of connection issues with your bandwidth maxed try 750kb/s.

Looks like you get a presumably used 5200 on ebay for 20 dollars or so, including shipping. You couldn't have been getting stellar performance with your existing card, but if you found it tolerable, a replacement might get you by while assembling the new system. By replacing a 5200 with a 5200 you would be likely to be ok with your current power supply, and it would likely fit.
Ten to twenty dollars will get you can of compressed air. They are available at Radio Shack, or as I just noticed lately, Office Depot has them. My daughter's old computer was having trouble a while back, and it turned out to be a clogged, stuck fan. I did not get a can of compressed air at the start of my attempt to fix it, and while I don't want to digress, I will say I should have.
Does your computer have a brand and model number? Like say, a Gateway 9310S, or a Compaq nx5300 or such? I'm wondering if it might be "sub-compact" one.

I mean thats pretty much a dino now..I know the 9800 or any of the 9000 series are too big.. How do i find the brand and model number? I pretty much built it and ordered it on Tiger Direct..you know...you pick out the parts..they build and send...

I'm guessing you're not in Oz? Otherwise I have a couple of spare AGP cards one was ATI and the other Nvidia. Not worth mailing them that far, yo could probaably pick up a whole similar spec PC tower for under $100. There must be stacks of computer wrecking yards overe there where they would throw cards like that at you to get rid of them

I've had problems with lag lately, but not everywhere. I've had problems recently around mega prims that are parcel wide. The extra huge mega prim hollow boxes for some reason are causing massive lag for me. Probably not what's causing yours, though.

yummy it is happening to me too, and nothing on my system has changed over the past year... SL always was slow a bit for me, but nothing like as of late
Other games and apps work just fine so I know it is not the PC or dust or anything like that... something happened with SL... not sure what though
And major issues with uploading textures, spoke to a few folks who said the same thing, uploading textures seems to be sluggish, especially waiting for them to rez...

Ok I just measured a 6200 AGP card I have, it's no thicker than the steel slot plate (20mm), its only 100mm from the top to the motherboad socket when plugged in and is only 170mmlong, about 300mm past the socket. This one is only 128k, has no fan, but a oos sizes heatsink, that could have one added easily but the's no guarantee all 6200's are this size, I've seen about 3 different size 8800's and 9500's that are smaller than this as well as 9400's, but don't tink the 9000 series is available in AGP.

I have major lag too, even on quiet sims with barely anything on them. I know my computer is not up to grade with Secondlife requirements, but I never really had too many issues until lately.

Ll Get A Damn Clue!
08-09-2009 15:23
Well Rha, and everyone else with lag..I did everything possible last night to fix the lag, and as soon as Id log in, it would be ok for about one minute..then the lag would come sailing in like demon hell fire and it was totally unplayable. Its frustrating as hell when you run a SL biz, but Im sure LL doesnt give a rats ass about who is doing what on SL, obviously. Its odd that I can run any other application or game, even photoshop CS4, which uses tons of memory, but it runs like a breeze. So, yes, it has to somewhat, at least, be SL. In all my years here, this is the worst Ive seen it. Honestly, Id just give up on SL if it wasnt for my business...this is just not worth fighting through every damn time I log in.
GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD LL< PEOPLE WILL LEAVE IF THEY CANT PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!
