How do you drive the blues away? Wait. Seriously. Sometimes that is about all you CAN do. Thanks guys. I slept 15 hours today. Only others I know that do that are death row prisoners. I slept about 20 one day last week. Been sick for a few weeks now (more than usual.) You do sound depressed though. That is some grim imagery. I hope you will find relief. _____________________

What I really do when I'm low is that I think of the people I know who are going through horrible things, and I grudgingly admit that I don't have any *real* problems by comparison...
I think especially of a friend of my mother's who seems to be on the verge of dropping into a well of depression, and it makes me back away from negative feelings. I don't want to get stuck on that side of things. And I go for a run. I love running, and afterward I usually feel amazing and happy and heroic. |

Everything Lindal said was good. Or you can take all the money out of your bank account and go spend it on whores and coke. _____________________

Thanks guys. I slept 15 hours today. Only others I know that do that are death row prisoners. Jenshae, If nothing helps, it lasts more then a few days, and it is not just being a little low; then you are clinacally depressed and you should probably seek outside help from a health professional to fix it. These things become a viscious circle with negative thoughts feeding the brain chemistry and the brain chemistry feeding more negative thoughts. Sometimes we have to reach out. |

Thanks guys. I slept 15 hours today. Only others I know that do that are death row prisoners. I do that when my waking schedule gets to be around 30+ hours... or I take 100mg of trazadone to combat insomnia. in all seriousness find something fun/relaxing to do and distract yourself with, no matter how pointless. long hot bathes with a good book to read are one I like. give yourself time to process whatever is bothering you, once you do, you'll be back to your old self. _____________________

Helping others always tends to put me in a better mood. Doesn't even have to be much - help out a noob for a bit in SL, hold the elevator for someone, smile at an old lady and exchange a few pleasantries. Music choice can often influence my moods as does exercise. No need to necessarily get a gym membership or train for a marathon but get a bit more fresh air, park your car a bit further and walk. Buy yourself a plant you can tend to or a little fish. Eat well. Watch your sleeping habits. Little steps can often lead to bigger changes. I wish you well

Another great resource to consider, run by a real life credentialed therapist, is Wellness Island in Second Life. It offers support and in-world resources for a variety of mental health issues if you feel this might be helpful. Life's challenges can often seem overwhelming to all of us at some point in our lives and sometimes it just takes a few steps in the right direction to get us back on track.

Hmm.
Seems to me that one could *apply* the borderline genius~ness to the problem of depression, thus solving the issue? * * * * * In other news, for absolutely no reason whatsoever, an unsuspecting person suddenly started getting zillions of $L 1 payments from people who oddly shared the Caledon group affiliation. I can't possibly solve your problem, but let's just say that a whole bunch of us were anything but depressed, and we caused a rather... completely unforgettable evening for someone else. ![]() Perhaps we got in trouble for it, too... I'm not sure. "Hello, support? I'm being spammed." "Yes, with ah... money." "Yes, it's going on right now." "How do I file the abuse report? There are several dozen names and it won't slow down." "Yes I'm completely serious!" "Hello support? Did you just send me $L 1 also!?" _____________________

Depression clouds judgment.
Not a small number of geniuses have succumbed to depression which is a major killer among adults. One might also say sensitivity leaves one especially vulnerable. Creative and gifted types are often also highly sensitive. _____________________

alas genius in one area does not always apply to genius in another area... look how many geniuses forget simple things like the need to tie their shoelaces, ere they trip and break something important like their skulls

Kurt Vonnegut struggled with depression all his life. I'd say he was a genius.
Einstein didn't speak til he was four and regularly forgot the way home. He also wore the same suit daily at one point in his life so he wouldn't have to think about it. Gifts for one area of life don't necessarily mean gifts for LIVING life - as most would define it. _____________________

If one is to claim outstanding intelligence, then by all means it can be employed to solve problems! Most people know what their IQ is. It was actually that detail in her statement that was the most telling. At least to me. One of the reasons I suggested turning off the message board. Was pretty sure at some point, that someone would suggest that if you're so intelligent, then "snap out of it", "get a grip", "figure it out", "for god's sake, use your wits to fix it." Just a hunch. |

Two things my father used to say:
One was a quote from Robert Ingersoll - "The way to be happy is to make others so." The other was about how the purpose of life is taking all the crap and garbage and waste and turning it into something good. |

Social attitude towards depression and mania are very difficult to deal with. People who have not had dibilitating depression have no real concept of it. The think it is like feeling a little blue or down. It is a much different monster. You cannot just snap out of it.
I mean who really would choose to spend thier life laying around in the dark given the choice? I suffer depression and sleep problems often. I have seasonal affective disorder and the more difficult symptoms are in winter. There are days I have to really force myself to get up and go to work. There have even been a few here and there I haven't been able to do that. I often won't eat if I am home alone. I just can't make myself get up and go to the kitchen. Good days I just feel remote and wrapped up in my own cotton ball. It is not just neccesary things you can miss either. It is stuff you really want to do. It just becomes too difficult. You can loose friends and family over it. So, you drag yourself to things that are supposed to be fun and force on a happy face even though the joy never reaches you. You want to feel happy, mentally you are happy for whatever event is being celebrated: birthdays, holidays, etc. Emotionally though... the feelings are just muted, missing, or sometimes derailed. That is depression. Seasonal Affective Disorder and other bi-polar disorders have another component which is mania. It feels a lot better, but has its drawbacks too. In the summer you might have energy to do anything. You can stay up all night or to late late hours and get up in the morning feeling great. Just because you feel great doesn't mean you are. You can overlook serious injury or illness because you feel great. You can get in trouble at work because you feel like you can do anything. You don't have realistic expectations or judgement. You can get injured doing stupid things because your judgement tells you of course you can make that light. Hurt your friends and family feelings because you cannot appropriately share the sad times. Again you can mentally understand it is so sad that a life had ended and this is a day of mourning, but you just can't feel sad. So, you again put on the appropriate act or face and make it through the day. The normal people never understand how much you wish you could just conform and be appropriate. It is so easy for them. Thier feelings mostly work right. If they have a problem it is minor and temporary. Eventually life goes on. You hopefully find those that understand you. You find ways to cope with your differences or get help. Most of us end up feeling somewhat isolated, different and alone. We put on acts so often, so we often have trouble keeping in touch with ourselves and who we are. I sincerely hope that is not the OPs problem. I just suggest that depression is not taken too lightly. |

I actually like Des' hooplah myself. Plus I don't think he in any way meant to be insensitive, because I have never known him to be purposfully insensitive. I think people just don't understand depression. |

I shouldn't be so obscure, sometimes ~ clearly a lot of people don't understand my writings at all. Happens, I guess.
For the rest: my actual comment/reaction was triggered from this part: "I am lazy" Laziness isn't always clinical depression. More often than not it's just garden variety laziness, quite self curable. Want to be happy? Brighten someone else's day. Works wonders. * * * * * "Cadet, why aren't you out marching with the squad?" "I've come down with laziness, sir." "Ahhh, right then! Let's get you to the infirmary, can't be too careful with Laziness!" "Sir, do you think it might be a brief Ennui, or full blown Creeping Desert Laziness?" "Hard to say, impossible to tell at this point. But we'll take no chances! Nurse, get someone to do this fellow's laundry for him immediately!" "Thank you, sir. Might I have a deck of cards?" "Here, take mine, I was laid up with laziness all last summer. Stay brave!" _____________________

Motivation: Knowing that mesh import is going to make almost all existing content instantly turn into obsolete garbage and that everyone will be starting over. Willingly. Because the mesh content will be totally detailed and superior to sculpty blobs.
