How do you keep yourself motivated? What drives you?

I found myself saying this today:
From: someone
There are 6 nearly 7 billion people running around messing up the world. There is very little one can do about that and pretty much anything you achieve will be erased or forgotten in a few generations.
I have a border line genius brain that I have not put to any good use. I am lazy and have no ambition. I don't desire possessions or wealth, nor power, recognition or admiration.

I don't dream of the future any more.

Sometimes, I don't. This sort of thing happens to us all from time to time.

But, you could try this:

When you feel blue and useless, think: "What one thing can I do RIGHT NOW that needs doing?" It might be writing a letter to a friend, supporting a Cause, or weeding the garden. Something always needs doing, whether it is a great thing or a small one.

Make sure that it is something that you can do, and finish, in a short period of time. Not something big like, "I will go back to school and get that Ph.D. in physics I've always been meaning to." But it can be PART of a larger project or goal ("I'm going to research physics doctoral programs today.";)

Once you have a thing to do...go and do it!

The Bible says, "there is nothing new under the sun, and that which is done is what has been done"...but it also says, "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might."

Everything Lindal said was good. Or you can take all the money out of your bank account and go spend it on whores and coke.

Or get elected to public office and let the taxpayers pay for it.

When I had my major meltdown several years ago, I got into my car and drove off, and spent about a month on the road, living in random hotels and wandering the Northeast. I would take a route just because it looked interesting, and would stop when I was tired. Sometimes I would spend a day or two in a place, or be off again the next day.

I don't have major episodes like that anymore, but I do have mini meltdowns every so often. Sometimes a hot bath, a bottle of wine and Miles Davis can cure it, sometimes a walk in the woods with my dog does the trick, and sometimes I again will jump into the car and drive. These jaunts only last several hours, occasionally overnight, but the are a good way to disconnect from the rat race.

I often find that it just goes away by the next day. So, I try to take it easy on myself and realize tommorow, after a nights sleep, I will most likely feel more positive. If it lasts over a day then I try to figure out exactly what the problem is.

I try and count my blessings and remember there are many more people 100x worse off than myself so what have I got to feel sorry about.

That works for me ;)

I think of Seven. No red-blooded male can remain blue after a minute or two thinking about Seven.

Borderline geniuses have a tendency to find getting traction rather a challenge. In fact, there's a hell of an irony to that when you think about it - so smart, the smarts can't be used for anything. Which isn't that smart, really.

Me, if I find that typ of blues is getting close; I sit by the SAD lamp for a bit and pop some pills - generally Zinc & Cod Liver Oil.

Garbage in/garbage out - constant barrage - no time to process - too much info coming at you from all directions - bumping and crashing - clashing - then floating around and drifting - then bits and pieces attaching to your brain cells - no peace, and no time in which to process effectively .......

Turning off the Internet for a week helps a lot. Particularly message boards, and turning those off for much longer than a week. Helps to process the world without all that clutter being tossed toward you. All you have left to process with, are your own good feelings and good intentions, judged by YOU only, or a handful of people around you. Lot less stressful, that way.

Not sure if that was your quote or someone else's, Jenshae.....but on the lazy and no ambition definition.....make sure you don't get that off the Internet. Define it yourself. Not judging - been there - and I much prefer my own definitions - you might like your own better, too.

And all of the above was just more garbage in/garbage out. :)

I heartily recommend this. Being offline for the holidays while on vacation was a refreshing experience. Not owning a laptop makes that easy to do, of course.

I go outdoors and walk, preferably away from human habitation, even if it's just a small park. Nature never fails to improve my mood (not to mention the sunshine, fresh air and exercise).

I would follow that statement with "well this sucks, I'm bored, what's there fun to do?" and then go do that....

although I think that if every bored semi-genius only asked themselves "what is the most amusing way I could take over the world", then presented the result of that thought for someone else to ridicule (thus increasing the desire to do it just to prove them wrong) we'd have alot more interesting things going on in the world, whether the semi-genius succeeded or not...

besides we all know that the success of anyone's plan is proportional to the number and selection of mindless flunkies they can get to carry out their plan when they get bored with it.

PS
so if you find a salesman at your door selling hallucenongenic frogs, it meansone of my mindless flunkies from years ago found more mindless flunkies.... or had kids.

I take the rifle out and shoot something helpless. Often not even something living.

Destruction breeds creation. Good inspiration in it.

What Malia says ^. Take a walk. Beethoven walked every day and claimed he got a lot of inspiration for his work that way.

One time I went for a walk and found my iPod battery dead  . That was frustrating, but I went anyway. My brain was set freed to outline almost an entire future history in my head. I think we do have too much input, too many distractions. We can't really multitask as much as people think. And creativity is important to a healthy mind in my opinion.

I get very frustrated at the day job for taking all my energy and I feel too drained to create, or even to socialize in SL, but I suppose in the end it's up to me to find that energy. I haven't solved that part yet.
