Why do people complain about SL?

I've been delighted with SL since I joined......I'm not in the habit of complaining, in SL or IRL actually. If I have the means to solve a problem on my own, I do. If it is beyond me, I'll seek help....but I don't whine, snivel or otherwise throw a hissy fit over anything (well, ok, except maybe lousy drivers ... that makes me insane lol)

In the three years I've spent in SL......I've helped tons of folks and learned a LOT in these forums and in my own research..... And most often when I'm faced with helping someone who is in all out 'whine' mode.......it's because they simply do NOT understand some very basic things. Either the confines of SL itself....or computer technology in general. And those are THE most difficult people to help because often.....they don't want to KNOW anything.....they just want it fixed. LOL

My attitude has always been to seek understanding....comprehension.....logical reasoning. I'm very grateful that my mind works that way. And I'm grateful that I still retain that sense of wonder about the world, that makes SL an extraordinary expereince for me~!! ;)

First of all, as someone already said, it isn't 20 years ago. Second of all SL has become an economy, we are force fed shopping malls, we have to pay tiers and are often fleeced by the system, some loose sleep over copyright infringements (poor didums) etc. - it is money not a fluffy virtual word any more.

If we are paying all this money (directly or indirectly), we want to have a say in how our "Virtual Taxes" affect the "Virtual World".

Take a look at another grid like OSGrid - no economy, it is real pioneer country and few, is any complaints - most just ho in and help out - it is wonderful.

Complaining can make for great comedy, thereby providing entertainment to the masses.

SL itself is remarkable, even with it's bumps in the road. The way it is being managed is another story.

Zena, please excuse me if this sounds rude...You have less than 10 posts and joined this month? How do you equate tier fees with taxes in the way you do? This is an absolute dictatorship, not a democracy. Until you are a major stockholder in LL (if they ever went public) you have NO vote. Think of this as a feudal society, not the Wild West. The Lord and King lets us live here by his leave. Your "taxes" pay for the servers, software and the expenses that go along with maintaining a Data Center in RL. What do you think gives anyone the right to dictate terms to the owner of a private business? Your recourse is to vote with your feet and leave the rest of us alone to enjoy our Second Lives. How much money are "we" spending? Looking at my account, I've spent a grand total of about $175 USD which gets me two Premium accounts, 2 512m parcels on the mainland, complete with furniture, houses and 2 security orbs, lots of toys, plus a month's rental on a lovely skybox complete with pool, TV, radio, a fun bed... I have to be suspect of your comments, no offense intended! Jackie.

They used to offer First Land

They used to have a program called First Land. It was for people that never owned land before. It was mainland, 512sqm, 117 prims and you paid 512L for it. Similar to first time home buyer products. But bots and greedy people took advantage of the program and it was eliminated. I was one of the fortunate ones that took advantage of it before it was terminated.

The purpose was to give a citizen land ownership, home and/or a place to learn how to build. I thought it was a wonderful program and hope they bring it back but fix it so the same thing won't happen as with the previous program.

Jackie, please excuse me if this sounds rude...You have less than 200 posts and joined last month?

Pep (And you haven't read the thread which explains that Zena is an alt with a grievance against LL?)

PS I have to be suspect of your comments, no offense intended!

PPS I can't believe I said "less than" rather than the correct "fewer than" :o

That would have been very nice for me. Even if they structured it such that in order to qualify you had to sign up for a full year (or maybe even 6 month minimum) Premium account paid in advance they could probably give the land away! Just a wild thought...On the other hand, I paid a grand total of less than $12 USD combined total for my 2 little 512m's, one in auction, one private sale. Not a bank breaker. Jackie

*giggles* In my case, I care about SL. I love SL and the only graphical issue I have right now is the avatar mesh.

Also, I love complaining and it's my favorite hobby right after Second Life.

I judge the health of a place by the kinds and amounts of complaining. Usually, if there is no complaining going on... there's no one there.

At least I got the money
04-15-2009 07:30
Prior to the openspace/homestead fiasco, I really had nothing to complain about except.... the lag, instability of the grid, limited logons. Post openspace/homestead fiasco.... the situation with my former land baron, the constant gesturing at live concerts and that insidious giggle laugh.

Other than the above, my sl life is really at a good place. Rl is much rosier. Except I got to pay my federal taxes for the first time in my ENTIRE life today. At least I got the money and it was much less than I anticipated.

Let me ask you this - 20 years ago if you were able to get on SL and see what the future holds, would you not have been blown away?
20 years ago I was already hoping for something like SL, though it would have been better if it had been based on _True Names_ rather than the as-yet-unwritten _Snow Crash_.

True Names *still* depicts something more like SL-as-it-really-is than just about anything written more than a decade ago. Including a scene with newbies on ridiculously overdone motorbikes with V8 engines and badly done texturing.

And True Names had portals!

For sheer volume, I'd bet that residents complaining about other residents dwarfs complaints about LL and SL ;)

I've never had anyone force me to a shopping mall. Is this a new LSL function I'm not aware of? llforceteleporttomall() or something?

You usually need to force me OUT of a shopping mall.

I mean the residents complaining about SL. Yes there is the akward social aspect but most complaints revolve around graphics...

Things like the feet looking horrid, or the akward movements of the avatars like the hands sinking into the body, etc.

Let me ask you this - 20 years ago if you were able to get on SL and see what the future holds, would you not have been blown away? Back when games like Castlevania were graphically advanced, if you had seen SL, how would you have felt?
Sl is something we could not have even imagined back then. Even if someone had said "The thing is, often times the scene takes a while to develop [rez] it would have still been mind-blowing.

Funny how today we not only take these things for grandted but actually complain about them.

Not only that, many of those same people create laggy scripts and primmy builds that contribute to in world issues. Building a 3D world is a 2 fold process. You have your coders who write the client/server software, and create protocols, and you have your content creation, which, normally, is done by professionals. However, SL is created primarily by it's residents. Now, some of these content creators are professionals, but the majority are not, and have no clue how to build. Also, professionals are given limitations that they have to stay within. Texture limitations, particle limitations, etc. Professionals also have to contend with the alpha sorting issue that we do as well, yet, they manage to create phenomenal games with incredible graphics. Also, for some reason, this particular forum, resident answers, seems to be the place where whiners come to whine.
