Jana thanks for the input. I do think that the education category is much more broad than simply being for classes for in world info only. If there is an event or special attraction on an educational sim I feel it should be included. If the purpose of the entire sim is to inform and educate, then does it not also qualify as education? Maybe the categories need to be expanded with one for "classes" and one for "education" to encompass things and places that are created for education and not only classes. I really see this more as an issue of inadequate event categories and tools to cover the many and varied things this great SL had to offer. And of course the interpretation that the education category is one only for "classes" is not stated in the TOS. If that is the purpose then maybe the added clarification would be helpful also.

I really do think most people in SL are not trying to decieve or manipulate...I think they just do the best they can with the tools and info available.

Thanks!

This again.

The events search is for events.

An educational event is called a class.

"Things and places" are neither an event nor a class, and thus do not belong in events search. The categories are not inadequate, you (and others) simply aren't putting your things in the right category. If you have an education-oriented location that you would like to publicize, then either hold a class (where nothing is sold) or use the Classifieds.

There is no need for deception or manipulation, but neither is there need to be "creative" with categorization. The existing categories aptly cover all appropriate events.

I teleported to the event for the Free Train Rides, listed in the Education category of events, not 45 mins. ago. There was no one there, which would be a breach in the rules for events.
Tho the educational part is worthwhile, I agree, as it pertains to sustaining the eco system of the planet, the sim also has a shopping mall and housing for rent, which is not educational.
I believe the concepts should be separate.

I have petitioned Pathfinder Linden to create a category for "Live Classes", so we can hope he can clearify this.

Jana...sorry you happened to tp in when a host was not there...there usually is one giving tours and answering questions at this time of day. Please feel free to visit the shops on Etopia...there is no mall, but we do have many businesses in etopia from both SL and RL that are focused on "green" issues such as solar energy, energy conservation, awareness of issues, health, green bldg practices, educational exhibits, etc. and some that just like being on etopia in a nice safe pg environment. please feel free to im me anytime so i can offer you a personal tour of our two sims and explain what we do...thanks again for the feedback. :)

Jana, the summary of event guidelines you posted earlier was very helpful and instructive. An event has a start and stop time. A class event requires the presence of a teacher.

There's no need for a "Live Classes" category to make things any more clear. If there absolutely needs to be someplace specific for people to advertise location-specific self-guided tutorials (as opposed to taught classes or materials-based tutorials), then let's make the new subdivision Self-Guided Classes and put it in the Classifieds. The distinction of "self-guided" classes and tutorials will be far more familiar to residents than "live" classes, which still do not qualify as an event or deserve inclusion on events search.

Claire and I just announced inj the forum of an event of ours that will take place tomorrow, however we did not use the events discussion forum, but the Special attractions forum... here’s why:

Event Discussion
Questions, ideas, and tips for managing and hosting Second Life events. (Please do not use this forum to announce or review specific events.)

Special Attractions
Announce parties, contests, games, charitable auctions and fun things to do

(We did add this event to the EVENT CALANDER...and we put a land mark there for your convenience)

We are having a PARTY tomorrow! (YOU ARE ALL INVITED!)

I suppose if I had placed the announcement in the former rather than the latter it would either get moved or get deleted...being I'm not selling anything, it would probably get moved instead.

I also 'mentioned' the party in a thread I started about good wedding ideas...and so far it has not been deleted or moved.

On a different note there had been a lot of hollering about forum decor and etiquette...in fear that the forums will be removed by LL. If you look at that issue from LL's POV, it would not be in their best interests to be rid of the forums, some of their best paying clients post in the forums: open forums can sometimes be a tool for the good PR.

And we see that LL is policing the forums more frequently now, which SEEMS to be arbitrary, but really is not...They are cleaning up the forums in the areas they see as needing the most attention. Have you noticed that RA is not being policed nearly as hard as some fear? This has been my hunch all along...and it is playing out as I foresaw it. LL is not as negative as some in here think they are... I think they are pretty open minded in general, so... Graph shrugs his shoulders and goes about business as usual.

snark you are too funny! LOL First, i really AM asking for a friend who is NOT me nor an alt. And NO i am not jana... considering we were disagreeing that is an interesting assumption. Actually i im'd jana in world and had a great chat with her about our own individual educational goals in SL and how we might work together in the future. i do love having a sincere debate in these forums and i always appreciate any constructive and polite feedback even if it is from an opposing point of view...thanks!

well that's comforting... to hear. in any case its GOOD that both the forums and the calendar are being supervised. i hope that the use of Second Life as an educational platform holds its own... whether the teachers are from a company or institution or just very interested individuals !

i hope they do start to enforce the event rules. every day for the past year there have been like 10 events a day on that star trek island that is only about renting star trek land to ppl to live there, these fake events clog up the real event listings. with the 10 a day every day for the past year i assumed they didnt police the events listing at all

Jojo, I'm very glad to hear that Etopia was warned -- your fake event listings have been driving me crazy for weeks. The train rides sounded interesting the first time I saw them, and I thought I might go there when I had time to spare, but you lost several points of credibility when I realized it wasn't an actual event but an ongoing attraction. And the moment I saw Etopia spamming the Education category with apartment rental listings, it went straight into the list of places I will never ever ever go or support in any way.

I do wonder why you're referring to "folks I know" as if you weren't involved with them while simultaneously advertising yourself as their marketing director. Guess you're going with the "any publicity is good publicity" theory.

Thanks for the input Rihanna...the apt listings in the event catagory were a mistake...simple as that. until i believe the last week - beginning on st pats day...when a new person was doing some listings, they were never in that catagory and to be honest until the warning came, i did not realize that they were...and for that i apologize. We rarely have advertised the apt rentals at all in events.

As for the train rides, we make an effort to have hosts at the train station during the times the train rides are listed to answer questions and give folks a tour of our educational sim. We have gotten amazingly positive feedback from the folks who have taken the train and spent time on our sims with us. We offer many educatonal displays and information as well as classes, discussions and lectures in addition to the tours and train rides which we hope will expose folks to the issues of environmental sustainability and ways to succeed in that space. I have appreciated the constructive feedback i have rec'd from this forum and have even spoken with some folks on the side to discuss the feedback because it is important to me and to etopia. Given the input I have received we are changing our events posting policies which have been to this point to advertise our educational train ride - yes, the concept of the train itself relates to sustainability - under the education catagory. Until I asked for the feedback i had no idea that some folks believe that the education catagory is SOLELY to be used for classes since that is not explicitly stated in the TOS. And yes, i have read the guidelines as im sure have many other folks who may have also used the events section incorrectly.

Im sorry that you feel that some mistakes warrant a boycott. In the future i would encourage anyone who feels strongly about something like this to actually contact the folks who are doing the thing at is offensive...in most cases i have found that people are nice and willing to make changes or at least listen to constructive and polite feedback. I certainly am and welcome any constructive input to be sent to me directly since i often dont look at the forums for days. Please let me know if you would ever like a tour, the offer is always open. :) I'll also send you this information in world and am happy to chat with you about all of our real events that go on daily....

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed feedback on this topic. Spirited debate and considering other folks motivations and opinions are certainly a great way to learn...:)

Take care!
jojo

Since when are apartment rentals and ongoing train rides events? I must be mistaken about what an event is if these are events.

Maybe I should post an event of me getting out of bed and stumbling to the outhouse.

Jojo, Search is absolutely chock-full of people misusing the listings, most intentionally. If we tried to contact even a quarter of them, we'd never have time to do anything else. Etopia's apparent mission is one I support, and so I'd tend to give them the benefit of the doubt, and if I had seen one apartment rental listing misplaced, I'd probably have assumed it was just a mistake. But seeing that ad placed repeatedly throughout the day, on top of the misplaced train ride ads, the only reasonable assumption seemed to be that since they'd been allowed to skim through on the train ads, they were now going all out on spamming.

As for the train rides, I don't remember anything in the text that described them as educational (granted, I haven't looked at the text in the past week). If they're intended that way, the ads don't communicate it well. My first impression was that they were simply intended as a fun tour of the sim, and my later impression (after seeing more Etopia ads for various things) was that the rides were intended to show off your rental properties. But even if the train rides themselves are educational, they're still not events. Classes, discussions, and lectures -- by all means, put them in the event listings. (I'm still always a little surprised to find events about RL issues listed under education, but I don't deny they belong there.) And you're quite right that it would be helpful to categorize things as all-day events. But even an event that lasts several days, like a scavenger hunt, still has discrete starting and ending times. By all means, advertise the train rides -- but under Places or Classifieds, not under Events. :-)

I found Etopia personally through Event listing.
The trains and area is based on Ecology education, trains are part of it in my humble opinion.
Before I found your place in my exploration with my alt, I found one place that was suppose to be a educational event on copy right protections, I didn't find classes just found someone charging 500L for gimp lessons.
Yes there is misuse of event listings but I think in your case it was mistaken if you were given a warning.
I am glad I found Etopia Prime personally.
Thank you for posting it in events.
