Due to having the same main email address since 2000 that was at one time very widely circulated, I get on average about 50 bytes of spam email /per second/. That's about 4 megabytes daily. I don't see it anymore, but it took me years to set up such a barrier of filters that none would go through. So I'd rather people worry about their security a bit more, in an informed kind of way. It's their collective machines that are used to annoy me personally.

I'll try to be less annoying. I take the basic recommended precautions. Firewall, AV, Malware scanners, no wireless, and I don't keep the machine on when not using it. I haven't had any problems. Other than never going online again, I can't think of much more.

Just treating the viewer updates a bit more seriously is perfectly fine by me.

I believe no ready-to-use exploit is floating around yet. It would take the good part of a day to write one and most of a couple of days to get it spread among any willing consumers, which means that we only run a chance to see any exploit in wide enough use to worry sometime around tomorrow. If it isn't getting spread, the chance of bumping into it being used is something like 0.001% per 24 hours. Since the viewer update is mandatory, and relatively few residents use an alternative viewer that might not be patched, the chance of a successful intrusion happening at all is something like 0.00001% per 24 hours, which would make anyone smart enough to actually write an exploit like that consider it a waste of time.

But it's the chance that is low. The impact of a possible intrusion is not.

I promise. I won't login until I have a patched viewer.

Hmmprobably you won't notice any stuff missing at all but maybe 6 months later when the debt collectors turn up for the money they clocked up by stealing you identity.
By then the trail after them is 6 months cold too of course, "Money for Nothing........"

Is anyone else having problems loading the new viewer?I had to go back to the old version,cause the latest one won't load,& now I was forced to update yesterday,& guess what?I can't load second life.I am so cheesed off.Can anyone help.PLease

Probably the fastest way to get back in-world is to completely uninstall secondlife (and/or the secondlife release candidate, depending what you've been trying to use), then download and install again. I'd go ahead and remove the application data files, too (that doesn't happen with a regular uninstall), but the instructions for where to find those differ between operating systems. So... if you need more help, we'll need more info about the machine and what goes wrong. (For example, I'm not entirely sure what is meant by "won't load"--what exactly happens when you try to run it? In the above, I'm assuming that just nothing happens at all, but if you get an error message, or the login screen appears, or....)

Even if someone did get into my machine, they would not find much. I don't keep any sensitive information on it, I don't store passwords or save cookies. Emails from unknow addresses are not opened. The connection is not on when I'm not being used, and if any. I scan the machine almost every day with spybot and adaware.. Computerwise I am a low value target. I dentity theft is always possible, but it won't happen from my end.

But it's moot. I have the patched Cool Viewer installed and it is working fine.My windlight free SL experience can continue.

What can I do my graphics only work with my old viewer anyone please why can't I just run that I was happy I was no bother I rarely even moan please why can't I run that one again. They did this too me before if I can't run my old viewer I can't run sl I am going to have to leave!

Riven- try one of these other client being talked about here- there is also the openLife one- Kirsten's- it goes nicely- and i am sure it will be patched soon as well.

you can bypass forced updates by using -channel "riven rules" in the desktop shortcut. on my pc my desktop shortcut looks like:
G:\SecondLife\1.19.1.4\SecondLife.exe -settings settings_10.xml -channel "nina's client" -set SystemLanguage en-us -multiple

Well, I was forced out of my 19.whatevernumberitwas. So far, it's kinda hard getting used to windlight lighting, but I'll manage. Though, I've noticed that my computer's fan starts whirring like nuts more frequently now. Oh well
