I'm upset. My power went out and I'm on my laptop on quickly diminishing battery power, and a wireless card, and forced to download. Lovely.

Uh, why not simply halt the download now, shut your computer down, and then restart later when your power comes back up? Am I missing something?

OK, I think I get what you meant now. You want to spend as much time as you can in-world before your battery dies, and the download is cutting into that time. Got it. When I first read it, I thought you meant you were stuck in the middle of a download, and afraid your battery would die before it would finished.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

You can always try the instructions here... http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Turn_off_WindLight_rendering

... and see if you can use the normal one.

personally I would rather have a secure viewer

I don't like the idea that someone could see files on my PC
(or anyone's PC for that matter)

I think this was the right choice given the circumstances

Not sure why anyone would want to use a viewer that could have this flaw in it (being all viewers are based on the opensource code)
nicholaz could also have this security flaw in it and why would anyone want to subject themselves to such a security risk?

will be interesting to see if nicholaz updates his viewer

Turning everything down to Low on these viewers does NOT make the world look like it does in a non-WL viewer. Not to mention that, if you want to be able to adjust the lighting to something that's actually usable, you have to set 'Quality and Performance' to High, which a lot of lower end computers can't deal with.

Because the Nicholaz viewer works , whereas anything beyond that doesn't, at least on my machine. It's Nick or it's Nada for me. It's a risk I'm willing to take. I really don't have anything to lose. And Annie is right. Turning WL down is not a workaround for us low enders. It's not the same as having a non WL viewer.

I never installed the viewer they need to patch.... I hope it works.. so far so good though.
Agreed, a security update is priority.

Goodness knows I wouldn' want someone to access my personal files..

They've said repeatedly that there is a very, very low likelihood of the issue being exploited, and it's already been in the viewers at least since the 1.19s came out...I can't afford to upgrade my system right now, so I'm going to chance it. *shrug*

If they break Nicholaz...well, WoW isn't so picky about hardware and the new expansion will be out in about a month.

I strongly suspect at least one of the old school viewers will be available with the security fix in fairly short order.

Don't it figure, I had just yesterday finally gotten around to trying the Cool Viewer for the first time, now I suppose it might not work. Hmm....

The Release Candidate Cool Viewer still works. That's "Second Life 1.21.4 (0) Oct 3 2008 11:56:46 (Cool SL Viewer)".

I think the older third party viewers will work because when the "channel" command line paramter is used, it bypasses things like checking for updates from LL.

Evidently, a fix will be made available for 3rd part viewrs, if their makers wish to use it.

So we just need to go find Nicholaz and follow him around while making this face:

I'm using 1.18.5.3.

Since the reason there's a forced update, is that there's a huge exploit out there that allows a hacker to take over your session, steal your money, steal your land, and all your transferrable items, and allows them to install programs on your computer..

do you really want to advertise that you're not using the latest viewer?
