Are there jobs in SL that are similar to camping, but that are actual jobs? I would be very interested in such a thing. Modelling clothing or furniture (or whatever) comes to mind.
Camping has paid my way through SL since i joined. well, now my spots have been eliminated, and now i am on the hunt for a new way to get SL income. If you pay campers, and you want 1-2 RL group member campers (not bots) to up your traffic count 24/7/365, please contact me inworld, cuz that's what i'd prefer. but if there's a need i can fulfill that requires involvement at least part of the time, i'd be more than willing to try that out too.
if you are against camping, just ignore this and pass on by. this is about finding jobs (sometimes involving camping) and not a discussion about whether bots and campers game the system, etc.

Glad you posted this. I have been a little curious as to what is available besides dancing and emoting sexual things. Finding a job in SL where I can have some fun also would be great. Good Luck 3Ring. Cannot wait to see what is suggested.

IMO, acting as a host in a no-sleaze club like mine or cafe like Madhu's would be the equivalent. Also, some shops are looking for models. You really have to search the employment ads and be quick with that, though. Most models are bots, for naturally understandable economic reasons, but some are real people, like at Analise.

good point. i should have noted....
#1 nothing sexual. that ain't my bag, baby. i'm all about the PG.
#2 i have become a pretty good builder, but that's fun and i don't want to tarnish it with deadlines and demands. i guess it would depend on what someone wanted me to create.

The other question is, how much money are you looking to make from such a job? Realistically speaking.

I've been seeing "live models" in SL in some stores - the one that comes to mind immediately is JCNY jewelry. They usually have at least 2 models at any given time. Clothing stores have been using this as well.
I would suggest locating these stores (I'll post more as I run across them) and checking with the owners on how to go about that.

well, i was willing to camp for 2/10... so camping wise i think that is fine. if it involves my actual time at the moniter, the price would obvisouly be quite different. but again, i just need enough to cover my tier and membership fees. i'm not trying to make a profit. if i wanted to go into business like that, i would not constantly give away free mall space. does anyone hire people to design shopping malls? i DO love doing that, and it has been the most fulfilling venue in SL for me so far... that would obviously have to pay more than L$288 per day. LOL

Does anyone know what the avg rate of pay is on the live models? That could be fun if you like to chat with ppl about clothing and designers. But hmm would that be a customer service rep then?

Are you looking for a job that permits you to park your avatar and do other things (equivalent to camping), or a job that requires engagement of at least a portion of your brain? ETA: Oops, sorry; I see you clarified that somewhat above.

I think Cristalle mentioned me because she remembered my query a few months back about hosts for my place. I have not hired any hosts but I'm still willing to consider it, and I'd be happy to discuss it in IM or forum PM with anyone who might be interested. We'd have to talk about what I have in mind, and what you think is a fair rate to be paid for what I have in mind.

i just received a note that asked me why i don't just buy lindens? to me, having SL pay it's own way is a sport, and extreme challenge. i don't want to pay out of pocket - i want this to be self supporting. i could go back to basic and then have no pressure at all on me to make any income whatsoever. and if i have to, i will do that. but in the meantime, my goal is to replace my lost camping spots with new ones, or find a different SL income that requires a little more involvement. (now i'm off to my RL job). i'll chime in again when i get home.

I need more Human Platters for my restaurant. Just lay on the table for $40L a hour. You get a Sushi suit, a notecard with descriptions of the food items on you and a group tag. If someone books you for a private dinner party you get $150L for 90 minutes. Just check with your Manager (Salvas Zapatero) and create a work schedule. Go to AQUA EROTIC DINING on Marmaris Island to check it out. . .

ETD uses live sales help. They have placards on a wall, so you can tip one if she's done a good job for you.
Blaze uses live sales help, too, but I don't know how they are paid.

From: 3Ring Binder i would not constantly give away free mall space. You could stop doing that and simply charge for your mall space. No camping or interactive time required.

I believe you will find that most of the clothing shops that have "live models on pose stands" are just using alts for that purpose. Why pay someone to just stand there, when you can use a free alt? The same goes for most photographic models. If a clothing designer wants pictures of pretty people wearing their designs, they either model it themselves, or they fire up an alt and take pics of the alt wearing the clothes.
I've seen a few stores where the modeling stand indicates you can camp on it, but there you would usually need to join a group for the store and agree to wear the "outfit of the day" that the store wants to display.
Some stores DO hire live attandants, to answer questions and deal with customer support. It's an idea that i think would really benefit the larger stores. Small ones can't afford it though, unless you only pay your hired help in merchandise that you make. (Work here, and get a free pair of my shoes for every 10 hours you have been on duty...) Or unless they somehow could earn a commission on sales made while there were in the store...

What about hiring out to model in a fashion show?

I was IMed in a store a few days ago by someone that welcomed us, asked if we needed help and chatted a bit about the design we were looking for. Not in any pushy way. I bought an item and initially thought I had the wrong colour and she immediately offered to help me with that (turns out it was the correct colour but mislabelled) I never bothered to look around who was talking to me but, as we were leaving, asked if she was the designer or store owner. She was "just" a model. I wish more shops employed such people! IM me inworld if you want the shop name - for the world I can't recall it now. Figures B.

From: 3Ring Binder .... to me, having SL pay it's own way is a sport, and extreme challenge. i don't want to pay out of pocket - i want this to be self supporting. .... I actually think that is a valid point of view. I will quite often tell people that the *easiest and fastest* way to get lindens is to just buy them. But I have talked to a few people that 1) really want to try and have their SL existence support itself or 2) are on a very restricted budget and the rest of their family does not consider putting money into SL to be a good use of the family money I have decided that all view points are valid and, like so much else of life, what works for me or is best/easiest for me might not work for others.

From: Ceera Murakami I believe you will find that most of the clothing shops that have "live models on pose stands" are just using alts for that purpose. Why pay someone to just stand there, when you can use a free alt? Because it's cheaper to pay somebody a few L$ an hour, and maybe some outfits that don't cost you anything to manufacture anyway, than to buy an extra computer and some more internet bandwidth and electricity to run your own alts. Also, hiring people gets you some favorable word of mouth when your models talk about what they do. Really quite a deal for a quarter or less an hour. From: Ceera Murakami The same goes for most photographic models. If a clothing designer wants pictures of pretty people wearing their designs, they either model it themselves, or they fire up an alt and take pics of the alt wearing the clothes. You're right about this one; Simone Stern (of Simone! Design) has stated it well. If she has people model her clothes (which she does on occasion) it's as a favor to friends; it's actually more work than just photographing herself. On the other hand, doing the favor can have real PR value. Back when I was still pretty new I was in BareRose one day and June Dion asked me to model a couple of outfits. I really got a kick out of that and told friends about it, so it was an inexpensive way for her to buy some brand loyalty and PR. Avatars as models DO have a real role in runway shows, should a designer choose to hold them. I don't think it would be humanly possible for one person to run all the avatars needed for one of those, between doing the fancy walks while coping with lag and the quick clothing changes.

I also believe that occasionally clothing designers will use models so that they can get on with designing clothing rather than designing avatar shapes. Essentially the model designs an avatar that makes the clothing look as good as possible.
