Another maintainance day, another promise of a more stable grid, another day of yet more lag, wonky prims and crashes, another day of taking 3 times as long to get anything accomplished. Here is my question, just how many years of poor performance does it take till someone gets fired and replaced with some one who can do a better job. I realize this is a harsh question, i am talking about some one's RL job, but seriously, what does it take till LL gets staff that can do a better job? This last month in sl has been truely piss poor, lol, the last year has been piss poor.
What does it take?

Iunno, but I was impressed by their ability to bring the grid back up more or less on time, then cheerfully break the website. ;)

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

What does it take?

I would think that it has to start getting to LL financially at some point. I was looking at the stats -- looking at what they paid in Stipends in July compared to the first half of August.

https://secure-web8.secondlife.com/whatis/economy_stats.php

I think that all stipend payments are paid out only to 'paying residents'? If that is the case, and assuming that all stipend payments are weekly (none of them being end-of-month stuff), then it really looks like they have had a big decrease in the number of premium accounts. We are half way thru Aug and they have only paid 1/5 of the stipend amount that they paid in July. If premium accounts decrease, then so would land tiers - you have to own land to pay tier and you have to be premium to buy land. Isn't membership and land tier where they make their money?

This Avatar is "assisting us with our enquiries".

When a black sedan with "National Telephone Company" turns up to take your neighbours away, you need to start worrying.

Knowing how LL messes things up it would probably be, "This Avatar is in the tub with it's wrists slit only partially , slowly bleeding out, just enough to cause unconsciousness."

One thing to remember about the stipend $L amount, not all stipends are created equal. Some get $500L and some get $300L.
Since all stipends are lumped together, the figures can be misleading.

There were some great replies to my question, but i think 2 mostly to have an effect were Financial and Competition, both being related. A number of other virtual worlds are out or coming out shortly, how many residents will be buying linden land or linden currency if sl is still barely functional most of the time and newer worlds that work are available. I guess the crap has to hit the fan in large numbers before LL gets it that a functioning grid isnt an ideal but a business necessity. It a shame that Linden Labs will probably wait until disaster strikes before making changes inside the company.

Last time I logged in about 2 days ago, there was a HUGE glut of land and land prices were lower than they have been for months. If that's not a sign of a lagging economy, I don't know what is.

Hope to see you in-world soon Breeze:)

Not at the company where I'm plant manager at. If they did, I'd fire the idiot that thought that was a good buisness practice.

Too bad in this case the "idiot" is the owner. *smirks*

Remember that there's a lot of rats 'jumping ship' since the ban on gambling; hence a lot of reduced concurrent logins, premium accounts, and excess of land for sale that hasn't been bought yet.

It will all settle out. Those of us who love Second Life for what it is are still here, doing what we've been doing all along; if we lose a few parasites who were only here to play slots (which frankly could have been done much more efficiently via a website) then I feel no sense of loss.

Except, of course, they can't play via websites now if they're in the US.

You know... maintainence is a reality of SL. It has to be done... it's bad enough that people get on here all the time and whine about everything as it is... and you're complaining about a pre-announced maintainece cycle which is a standard part of SL. Files need to be indexed once in a while or SL would slow to a crawl, so it's just a fact of life. If you're gonna whine about a simple 2 hour and 8 minute long pre-announced downtime, then quite and leave SL and stop posting your idiotic rants here. It's idiotic.

I didn't read it as complaining about the maintenance so much as the past performance of SL AFTER the maintenance. Maintenance should improve things..........make it work better. But the year and a half I've been here, more often than not (by quite a bit, I might add) the maintenance breaks as much if not more than it fixes.

I can whine if I want too........I expect the grid to be maintained. I don't expect the grid to be broke after maintaining it. It's a legimate bitch. I'll leave when I get ready to leave.....don't invite me to leave earlier than that. Thanks.

Geez Johan, did you actually read my post before flaming me or just the title? As Peggy pointed out i wasnt 'ranting' about there being a 2 hour maintenance shut down, but that the grid quite often doesnt function well or at all. That has been the case in sl for a very long time and my point was if the current staff is unable to provide a functional stable grid they should be replaced. I am all for maintenance, just suggesting that it need to actually accomplish something. Thank you so much for suggesting my post was idiotic and that i should leave SL btw.

I'm sorry for being so harsh, perhaps I shouldnt have been, but my point is you were complaining when there was nothing to complain about. I logged on just fine right after the update, and the update ran pretty much on schedule (only 8 minutes late), yet still, you start a thread which does nothing but complain about what hasnt happened. Did u have issues after the update? I didnt. As a matter of fact, I seem to have alot less than everyone else. Exactly why, I dont know, and I'm not saying that SL doesnt have issues or hasnt been borked after an update. But c'mon, there's nothing to complain about, still the complaints roll in. What purpose does it serve bring up what "might" happen? Personally, I'm thinking much of the issues people have are not LL's fault, but the computer owner's fault. I keep my system up to date, and optimized, and when SL makes a tiny change, and forums explode with complaints.. and Im not having issues, it tends to make me think some people dont properly maintain their system. Now, with that said, I'm not implying that you dont, but I think if people spent a little more time defragging, and making sure the OS is updated, and such, they just might realize that THEY need to keep up their end of the bargin. SL is a work in progress, and on top of that, it's a pretty demanding program. Yeah, SL has it's issues, but there's no point in bringing up something that hasnt happened. I didnt see anything specific in your post that suggests that you had problems after the update, just a rant about what you expect after one. If you have a legitiment complaint, then let's hear it, otherwise, why not say something like, good job for the quick and bork free update?

Johan, I support every word you say. After the restart in my sim even the usual lag was almost gone, even with more than 40'000 people online. Whining and spamming is the most beloved sport here on resident answers. This forum really needs to be renamed ...

I am aftaid i have to disagree with your description of the grid being bork free Johan, also my post wasnt addressing just today, as stated in it i was addressing the performance and stablity of the SL grid over the last month and the last year even. If you believe that day in and day out SL consistantly performs well then we will have to agree to disagree as i think this last month has been awful. And yes, i do defrag weekly. Blaming the problems of SL on the residents computers seems to be trying ignore a whole mess of repeatedly bad update coding.

you concede that you you have less problems than everyone else, and you still wonder why there are complaints rolling in... should people not complain simply because you dont have problems? seems to be what you are suggesting here.
