From: AWM Mars What about abbr words like Rez, Prim, TP etc???? Crossing language barriers and the use of color (colour) etc?? Any new form of platform, like the internet, will bring a raft of jargon, new words are being added all the time.... anyone 20 years ago heard of email, webhosts, appletes, pluggins etc? The special new words of SL are actually extremely interesting to linguists...as I've alread said on the "you've been Ginko'd" thread...

I tend to shorten some words but not a lot. and usually an acceptable shortened version of the word, such as ppl for people (I guess that is actually true shorthand)
If I remember correctly shorthand is mainly dropping vowels (I could be wrong)

From: Alyx Sands That would be to simplify it too much...he used slang terms and stuff, but not exactly txt spk. And acronyms do NOT equal txt spk.
Rememebr Shakespeare was 28 years old also

I personally hate "cant" and "wont" for "can't" and "won't." Using inappropriate apostrophes where they DON'T belong as well, e.g. "I bought two car's today," drives me bonkers. I understand that many SL users don't speak English as a native language, so give leeway to them, but when someone is a native speaker, there's no reason that they should destroy grammar just to talk to me.
Sorry. /rant off

I'm much less self-conscious of my abundant hyphens now. As is my wont I tried to change the cant of my roof one too many times. I can't get it right so I won't try again.

From: Susie Boffin I hate to even bring this up but has anyone but me noticed the increasing number of people saying things like u for you, 4 for for, r for are, plz for please and so on both in the forums and inworld? These acronyms not only slow down the reading comprehension of English speakers but also may totally baffle a person trying to learn English.
I suppose there may be some adults talking like this but it is child talk as far as I am concerned and totally insensitive to the reader. What is that middle word in your avatar icon? "Lil" ?? I do agree it makes it harder to understand what the writer is trying to say. It makes me immediatly classify the writer in my mind as someone who is not very intellegent.

My favorite lazy word is "ne". I mean seriously how f-ing lazy do you have to be to come up with a confusing abbreviation for "any" to save typing one letter. I will occassionally abbreviate a string of words. AFK, BRB, and such to convey a quick thought, but I don't understand the need to use 2 instead of to. It's one freaking keystroke!

From: Ann Launay I dislike the vast majority of internet shorthand, but 'ne1' (anyone) makes me twitch in particular. ne1 = anyone? ack . . . And I have never seen a smiling face when I see <3 (cat or otherwise), but a particular part of the female body. Well, two different parts, one that is more likely to be associated with women, and the other available to view on all genders.

I now wish I had no connection what-so-ever to Cambridge University. Speed reading's the key... didn't think it would work for me as an avid reader who chews every word, but it did. Not that I use it at home (partner uses Voice rather than Chat/IM.... and a tendency to use Voice in the Dune/Frank Herbert version lmao!)

From: Tod69 Talamasca For me its all about usage. I doubt the chat window in SL can handle a large paragraph, let alone "who really wants to read alot of text in a visual medium", so for length constraints, I can see shortening things here & there. BUT- if all one types is 'internet/text message shorthand', then yea, u haf problemz. You could blame this partly on technology, partly on laziness, and partly on the dumbing down of education. Technology requires us to keep up with it. Therefore we shorten certain words to "speed up" our reading time. Laziness, because really- who wants to read tons of text on a screen? Dumbing down of Education- Heh! Go talk to a 16 yr old. I work with 'em & its quite scary what they're taught or not. I remember back in the day when I used to get booted out of IRC chats for using full complete sentences and punctuation. Could be worse though! 7h3y c0u|d b3 7yp1n6 1n |337 5p34k!! hey could be typing in ? speak . . . Eeek. Back in the day I also wrote in full sentences and punctuation on IRC chat boards, but I ever did get tossed out of any of them.

From: 3Ring Binder 1337 5P34K U JU57 N33D 2 G37 U53D 2 I7. I read that without even thinking about it. I need vodka to make my sorrow go away. I also speed read through the Cambridge university quote- although I could never do it in Spanish (back when I could actually read it before I let my brain turn to noodles). Probably depends on how fast you can usually read. The faster, the more shortcuts your brain learns. Edit: I think <3 is supposed to be a heart =)

From: Salvador Nakamura QFT! = Quoted for truth asfar as i know it has been around since ICQ's early days , and yes SMS messages did influence it (Atleast in Holland), also there are many quides to chat-shorthand, so one could say it's a special language. (does not matter if you play ie. poker or chess on the net, you will see it anywhere) When this language slow's down chat, it's most likely because one of the chatter's has little internet chat experience, which again does not say much of their general experience. Thank-you thank-you thank-you . . .. I had no idea what QFT meant and I was afraid to ask. I also have no idea what SMS stands for.

I don't use any old voice, I use...the Voice. Let's see if anyone does what I say..... @Lexxi: Short Message Service. Texting on a mobile/cell phone.

From: Har Fairweather I'll use abbreviations and "txt" conventions if I have to communicate in a hurry and feel sure the other person will understand, but otherwise usually spell everything out. (Exception: When something works well as a rhetorical device. Nothing seems to express extreme amusement or hilarity in response to someone's comment than ZOMGWTFLOLROFLCOPTERBBQ!!! and it is universally understood, in my experience.)
I don't mind such usages, but L33T Speak (or worse, SP33K) needs to be hunted down and its practitioners eliminated with absolute ruthlessness. Absolutely intolerable. D3TH 2 L33T!! I have no idea what ZOMGWTFLOLROFLCOPTERBBQ!!! or L33T means. I assume that SP33K is speak, and D3TH is death.

I can tackle a 600 page book in an short afternoon. Properly spelled. Throw in cute little misspellings and cute little neo-words and I slow down to a crawl and whimper.
