Well this morning, there were over a dozen and they filled the first page of the forum index listing.

definition of necropost: to revive a long inactive discussion thread.

The Undying Thread has never been an inactive discussion, let alone a "long inactive" one.

Well then, my interpretation of the definition of "active" is quite different from yours.

Checked out your last ten pages there....seems there was "bumping" going on for that thread and ridicule of someone attempting an anti-undying thread and ridicule of someone catching up on previous threads....

I know... ridicule is a harsh word...but can't come up with the right word...maybe it is "mocking"....I mean, if it were me....and I happened to go over to the chit chat thread, and see you commenting like that on one of my posts, in your private world there....yep, I would use the word ridicule or mocking, especially since it was done behind one's back in the "private" thread which you seem to forget is not private.

I did see 2 people welcome a newcomer - good for you - but also saw half a dozen pass up the welcome, so the stats aren't good....and I saw some conversation that was relevant to a subject topic, but too hard to follow because of chit chat that a moderate forum user would not be able to take the time to weed through.

If the chit-chat thread works for you...fine....perhaps catching up on previous threads, and posting a "thank you" for the info, or perhaps expressing an opposing opinion toward the undying thread, works for others.....

If you don't like it don't read it, no one is making you read it and so what if it's old, doesn't mean it's not usefull.
Now people want to take away the freedom to reply to a thread because it's too old, can't people go and infringe their power gaming fetishes elsewhere.
Posting to an old thread is not duch a morally irresponsible crime for goodness sake that we need to outlaw it and put controlmeasures in place.

You are absolutely correct. IF the person has something to say that is relevent to the dead post, then they are welcomed to necro it. But from most of the posts I read to bring said post back to life, they were not adding anything to the thread. Posting "What is the purpose of this?" remarks don't add to the thread. If they are new, by all means, post as you will. But please, if you are going to bring a thread to life that most of us have forgotten about, make your post relevent.

The way i see it, if a thread is on the last page, start a new thread.

Necro posts where it is obvious that the poster hasn't bothered to read the thread don't impress me much.

Oh, I think someone is perhaps just in a snit at me....or not...I really don't care. What I DO care about is having the entire first page filled with necroposts (at the time I started the thread) and since I started it, and it was MY rant, I'll use any words I
choose.

I'll tell you this much. I'm utterly and totally exhausted, I've been working my butt off both inworld and in RL, and if you don't like my posts, don't freaking read them. I promise, it won't hurt my feelings.

Maybe next week, necroposts won't bother me as much...but I seriously doubt it.

The way i see it, if a thread is on the last page, start a new thread.

This - with a caveat-

I do not care if the OP is 900 years old- it makes sense to me to add to it rather than starting a new thread - IF THERE IS A REAL ADDITION- the addition can be more questions OR answers- I can't see it would need to get closed and start over- there could be relevant data even if the old thread is very old.

What I find annoying and found in this particular go round- was the one post that said the exact same thing that had been said over and over about alpha channels (the gimp question) and ended with a snarky "go read a manual".

Since it was revived, I did add something I personally had recently learned- (might be irrelevant to others- like applying textures to individual prim faces with out opening the textue window apparently was known far and wide and I was late to the party having been here 3 years and not being aware before hand- (I had not run into that previously) - so I chose to add my two cents to the thread.

Aside from that, once I caught, on I lost interest. Big believer in if it does not interest you then ignore it.

The vast majority of the comments posted in this round of necro posting were nothing relevant -- made me think of someone going into a couple of dozen threads and simply adding a comment that says "me too"

Let me try making the point again. And this is the nature on any type of message board.

If you are a daily poster, you view things differently than if you come in now and then for information purposes. The necroposting may make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. For a non-daily poster, it may not bother you to see some old threads that you pick up some information on, and want to respond to. And I use the word "may" as I am not in the head of everyone posting.

Heck...you may not even know they are old threads. I just read topics on the first few pages - I don't check dates. If I do a search, and get involved in reading a long thread with great information....often forget that I had retrieved old threads, and get ready to respond, then realize it is an old thread. Maybe some people don't catch that, or maybe some people don't care, and respond anyway. Is that a crime? If it's a crime, then why aren't old threads locked?

I send a ton of people here, to get information. People who have questions to ask, that I can't answer. Most people I run into have never been here and it could be a valuable tool to help them with some questions they have. What usually happens, is they read a few threads, then come back to me and say something like "no way am I am posting my question there, they would eat me alive." It's that way on any message board....don't take it personally.

But it's a shame they don't feel like they can barge in, and start talking. They are active participants in SL and have some great thoughts and ideas, and they want to learn.

My point on the undying thread is....that I find it odd, that participants there, would call out participants in other threads for similar behavior. To me, seeing that thread, (which I've never been able to make heads or tales of, and can't really glean information from, in a small time period)....popping up over and over again, is as annoying to me, as you seeing necroposts show up.

Can you understand that? And can you understand why new people would be unlikely to make their first post if they ran across a thread like this?

On one of the necroposts I saw regular posters respond....why didn't you dog them?

Mickey, for heaven's sake...the girl was digging up posts to add "me too". If she had added anything of substance, I'd probably have never said a word. I got the *very* distinct feeling she was padding her post count.

And as a whole, the members of this forum DO rush to assist new people, so if someone thinks otherwise, perhaps they've been pre-warned.

Anyway Mickey, have a nice day.

It is the initial necro post that I was whining about -- especially since the majority of those posts were not comments that gave any info other than along the lines of "me too" or "I disagree". I don't really have a problem with it if they are adding more info or asking related questions. And yes, I suppose it is "somtimes" subjective as to whether a comment is really adding any info or asking a valid question, but simply repeating what has already been said is not adding info and asking "what's the point" is not a valid question in a thread that had already answered that many times over.

I usually do not jump on the folks that respond to a necro post because they are just picking up whatever is popping to the current list. However, the necro post itself requires one to search and not pay attention to the dates of what they find, or just pull a list and go to the oldest stuff.

As to the Undying, it really does simply serve the purpose of a general discussion forum that LL decided to get rid of and it really has kept a lot of RA threads from getting derailed into general chit chat.

I honestly had no idea that the mere existance of the thing "popping up over and over" would really annoy someone. Even other times I have read people about the Thread no one said just seeing it could get under their skin. Different perspective I guess.

Honeybear....it's not personal....I would have responded to anyone posting that. I don't recall every being in a snit with you.

Let me try this.

Original Post as if I wrote it: "I thought about adding to the Undying Thread, today....but just too lazy to do it. WTF is it with that thread being at the top of the thread list all day and every day ?!?!?!"

If I had done that.....the resulting thread would not have been pretty.....would it? You might have said something...wouldn't you? In fact, there was a thread like that....didn't make it through the whole thing...let me go find it, and see if it was pretty.

And don't think I haven't wanted to do that...so I know where you are coming from. I understand the undying thread serves it purpose for some....and not suggesting it go away....just pointing out what I thought was a bit of hypocrisy in evaluating contributions of other posters in other threads.

And "if" it is simply wanting to be involved, and saying "me too"....doesn't that happen over and over again in the undying thread? or any thread? Not dogging that at all....human nature to want to be a part of the discussion and a "me too."

As for padding post counts.....4000 pages of posts didn't do that for a few people?

Just pointing out that it works similar on both ends....and offering a reminder that a new poster will read a few threads, make a judgment, and decide whether to contribute or not. I can't say that some of my posts were squeaky clean, and represent what a new contributor should see...and I did get called out for them, as it should be.

You have a nice day, too.

Amaranthim...it might just be me...but I doubt too many people would pipe up about it, considering the volume of posters there, and the wrath that might ensue. :)

But yes, from my perspective....it is very similar to you seeing necroposts show up.

Well the issue isn't necroposting, it's obviously padding :)
