Do people gender switch a lot when they create a new personality for SL? I considered it when i first registered. Thought it might be neat to play a guy. But I couldn't bring myself to do it. I've spent around a week now in SL, and i've found out during this time - that even in world - I am all woman!
I've probably spent close to $5,000 Lindons now, on clothing and accessories! I can't seem to stop either. Good Lord, help me!
And my folder tree is a complete nightmare, and this after only a week? I don't even want to think of what it will be like after a month. I really need to spend some time cleaning up my folders and organizing, but I cannot seem to get myself away from the shops and stores - whats a girl to do?
Just rambling - pointless stuff really...

Just rambling - pointless stuff really... Oh Misti.... DO DO DO organise your inventory NOW.... A week is nothing... I have been in SL for 10 months and my inventory is a complete MESS... the worse it gets the harder it is to organise it and the more time it takes... copies of items in outfits, freebie boxes, duplications, it all takes more time to load and puts a strain on the database, i cant tell if i have lost inventory or not day to day... START NOW... please.. you will be thankful you did later i promise you... I have a male alt.. to answer your other question. I made him to try out a male outfit i was purchasing for a business venture, and also to get some rest from my other life as imogen, which is very busy. I do go wandering sometimes as a male, and find it interesting how differently I am treated as a male. I don't form friendships if i can help it, to avoid getting into a mess and having to explain that i am not what i seem. My male alt is a free spirit.. and that is quite refreshing and relaxing. My Male alt has a very neat inventory.. very masculine... love imogen

*seconds inventory sorting* If you don't do it early on, you'll spend a full week at some point to get things in order . One way I combine shopping and a clean inventory is to make a top level "Shopping Bag" folder. Each time you buy something (or when you're done with a particular store) you drag/drop your purchases into that folder and you just keep on shopping. That way your inventory won't be an entire mess of folders from your latest purchases, ruining your previous sorting, and when you're done shopping (or when you have a moment to spare) you simply sort through your "shopping bag" and put things in their proper place .

But I couldn't bring myself to do it. I've spent around a week now in SL, and i've found out during this time - that even in world - I am all woman! Hehe, I think there are quite a few men who play female AVs for a part of their time -- but I think it's hard to pull off the illusion if they start to form friendships and such. I think I could tell the difference between a male and a female typist if I were interacting with them, but then again some people are better actors than others, and at least some men out there could probably "fool" me. I don't worry much about it, as long as they are fun to interact with. From: someone I've probably spent close to $5,000 Lindons now, on clothing and accessories! I can't seem to stop either. Good Lord, help me! Lol, 5000 is nothing honey, just wait! A nice skin can cost 3k, once you start adding outfits and such it will cost more Lindens, but I'd encourage you to look at it as entertainment budget as long as you are having fun. From: someone And my folder tree is a complete nightmare, and this after only a week? I don't even want to think of what it will be like after a month. I really need to spend some time cleaning up my folders and organizing, but I cannot seem to get myself away from the shops and stores - whats a girl to do? You should organize -- take a half hour or an hour and organize your items, otherwise as you get more of them you will find that you waste a LOT of time trying to find things. A few tips on your inventory: 1. Open two inventory windows when you are moving things around (you can select "open new window" from the inventory window menus) -- keep one open to your main "inventory" and the other open to "Recent Items" and move items from your recent items to the appropriate folders in your main inventory, which should then simply open and close. I find it makes it easier to do the organizing with two windows. 2. Try once a day to place everything in its appropriate main folder (ie, objects in Objects folder, animations in Animation folder, clothing in Clothing folder, etc.). That's the most basic organizing step and shouldn't take much time. If you let it go for too many days, things start to get cluttered and it takes longer to organize them! 3. Once you've done that, consider how you view your inventory and decide to add subfolders into the main folders to help you find things faster. Some people have more "quick and dirty" filing systems, while others have very detailed, nested systems -- it's a matter of personal style really. For example, you may want to organize your clothes into set outfits (you can use the "appearance" function to save everything you are wearing into an "Outfit" which you can name ... this creates a folder with that name, and it saves everything you want it to save, including shape, skin, HUDs and the like). Alternatively, you may want to organize your clothes by type, having one for underwear, one for tops, one for jackets, etc., and pick them out like you might do at home. Another alternative is to organize clothes by "style" and then by item -- so in other words have a folder named "Casual" then a subfolder named "shoes", for example -- it all depends on how you like to look at your inventory and how detailed you want to be in your organization of it. I myself tend to keep things in outfit folders, but there are many other ways to do it. 4. Consider creating a storage prim -- it can be a box or a cylinder, something simple to create, and you can transfer inventory to it and store it there so the inventory you are carrying around is less cluttered. You can then store the storage prim in your inventory (or leave it on a piece of land if you are owning or renting any land). 5. Periodically purge things from your inventory that you *know* you will never use. Really cuts down on clutter. 6. Use the library -- it contains your "starter" set of items and contains a lot of useful stuff. Once you rez something in the library, it will turn up in your inventory typically. 7. A useful tip: to find everything you are currently wearing, open your inventory window and type "WORN" into the search box -- handy for changing out selected items, or keeping track of whatever attachments you may be wearing that are hidden from view. Most of all have fun -- it helps if your inventory is cleaner because that means less time looking around in it for things and more time having fun!

I am a RL woman but so much of a tech geek that I could fool anyone into being a guy, hee hee. Tried it with my alt but somehow this butch male just felt weird and I couldn't get used to him. Now, the tiny bunny, on the other hand...

I made a male alt but just couldn't figure out what to do with him. It's just not as fun dressing up a man in sl. I wasn't about to spend the same amount of money on him as my orginal either. lol
He has one outfit and I normally only bring him online to save me from a bad date. (2 computers) He comes in as the jelous x and saves the day!

Some great tips and insights - thanks to all. I really love the shopping bag idea, and will be using it! I suppose I should - the next time i am iw - get started on organizing - while i still can! From: someone Although, if you'd go shopping for good male stuff, you'd have an easy time spending much, much more. I cannot even think about that one right now - I am still trying to acheive my "look" - and besides, if I hook up with some guy I would hope he can buy his own stuff - if not, it would be too much like real life! Where are the highest quality and most expensive skins located anyhow, by the way? I spent 1500 on my current skin, and i don't think it's quite what I need...

5,000L? Awww my shoes folder is worth that much at least. You need to shop , Hon. I use the shopping bag idea too, along with a storage folder for stuff tat I buy (usually on sale) but don't have a use for at the present. That folder is getting a bit too large right now.

Since this has turned into a thread about inventory tips, I'll say that I made a folder called "rarely used items" -- kind of self-explanatory what it is. It gives me a place to put those things that I almost ever have a need for, but don't quite want to delete, just in case.
I just have to browse through it periodically to remind myself what's in it.

Isn't shopping fun Girls. But it can lead to a very cluttered inventory. I like to organize my clothing into outfit sets with well named titles. I wish "no copy" items didn't exist since they make mixing and matching more difficult. But since it does exist, I learn to deal with it. For "no copy" items like jewelry and some special shoes, I keep them out of my outfit sets and put them on after I determine which outfit to wear. But for the "no copy" clothing, well I just try and do my best to coordinate that piece with something else that I know I will want to wear. For things that I don't like, I delete them. There is no point holding on to something that you will never want to use. I also organize my landmarks into categories (shops, clubs, education, gardens, cultural, etc, etc, etc). Work up front saves a lot of time in the end. Plus it is a good idea to periodically revisit these landmarks to remind yourself where you have been and what the major theme for the landmark is. And it helps you identify when a certain SIM has been relocated. Now let's go shopping.

Has anyone built a wardrobe that i could use to deposit clothes etc into rather than my inventory?
I dont have that many clothes but it would be great if i could keep them completely separate from my inventory.

My inventory is so scary I literally tuck things away in a folder called
"I hate my inventory"
When I put an outfit together its a journey of rediscovery of clothes I forgot I owned.
I couldnt begin to guess how much Lindens I have spent on clothes and skins and hair and shoes. A number with lots of zeroes anyhow.

I hate my inventory but occasionally I move all the stuff into their generic folders, eg body, clothing, house etc. Then I create sub-folders within those, eg in clothing I have bags, jewellery, lingerie, outfits, shirts, shoes and pants etc.
The best skin I have seen in world is by RAC. Costs 4kL which is too much for my purse at present but lovely.

All my folders have "Back of the closet" folders nested in them for stuff that I just don't wear very often. I usually go through once a week or so and shuffle off the stuff I'm not wearing very often into the back of their closets. Makes it really easy to find the stuff I still like (If I didn't I'd delete it) but just don't wear often. I tried a storage folder, but it was overrun in a week. o.o
Another tip- spend 2 or 3 days specifically looking for freebies and low cost items at *designers*. Not Freebie Dungeon or it's like, but limiting your budget to no more than 1L per box bought. It will give you a sizable wardrobe of high quality stuff to fall back on and it'll really give you a feel for which designers you like best so you can go back another day to buy out their inventory. You'll probably find that your tastes run to a smaller group of the high quality designers (I'm a PixelDolls girl through and through for clothes, but I have a lot more variety in hair designers) and start to build up a look of your own for a lot less cash.
If you're under 30 days old still, you can get even more for free, skins, shapes, hair, clothes- you name it, someone's giving it out for free.
I've spent tens of thousands of lindens in game at this point, but being frugal helps to keep all of those Lindens going into stuff I'll actually use!
(edit) Feel free to IM me in game if you want pointers on where to go for free, but high quality, stuff. I don't have a freebie box (and most of the stuff out there is no transfer so I couldn't give it to you if I wanted to) but I love a good deal and like chatting with folks ^.^

Going back to the OP ... funny this is brought up ... last night my in world partner received an IM from one of his in world friends. They've been friends for about 9 months... the purpose of the IM... the friend wanted my partner to know that he is really a man, playing a woman in SL.
His reasoning for it was to not "hurt" his RL marriage. He figures if he plays a woman who is a lesbian, he's not hurting his RL wife. Go figure!

In Japan, The performance of Traditional Female theatrical roles have been played by Men for the past 600 years (On Morals grounds, the Theatre is no job for a woman). One of The Formost Female Impersonators on the kabuki Stage, a gentleman named Utaimon Nakamura was quoted as saying that Women could not Properly Play the Roles of OTHER women because they were incapable of Viewing their Behaviour, and Motivations Objectively. The best they could hope for is a characature, or parody based upon their Own Feminine personality. Only a Man, being so utterly removed from the Realm of Women could Observe, and Portray Individual Women with Purity, untainted by their own feminine experiences. I find the concept Intregueing, But i'm not at all sure i agree with it.
I've Known several gender switches in SL, and before that, In TSO. I just don't think it's possible to Pull it off for Any length of time at all without them tripping up some place. The socialization and education of men, and Women in Western society is so different i Doubt that a Man can Really know what it's like to be a Woman, or a Woman, to be a Man. Face it, Most women are raised with the idea that all it takes to be male is to Swear, scratch yourself at inappropriate moments, Drink beer, and elevate the Superbowl, and the Three Stooges to the level of High Art. Men are raised to believe that Women are Erratic, self absorbed, mercenary, emotional basket cases with Incurable Chocolate, Cheesecake, and Footware Addictions (And it's so frustrating in SL i can't find enough Decent shoes myself, but that's beside the Point. Lol). I think about the Best people can Manage is a Semi-convincing Impression of the other, But like watching a professional impressionist on TV Imitating a movie Star, after a while it becomes obvious that they are Characaturing their subject.
I'm happy and secure being who i am. My First day in TSO, i DID come in as a man, but in the end i was utterly at a loss. I had no knowledge really to Draw on, and the experiment failed Utterly. No, I'm a Woman, and i will Happily Just be Myself, no matter What the venue, it's the thing i know best.
Angel.

I helped my husband to buy clothes by taking his AV out shopping and I was so afraid someone would talk to me! However, I find being a dragon easy as pie. Have a great time in SL!

I bought a RAC skin right away ($L4000) and have stuck with it (just upgraded when they came out with a new version). They have an island and great eyes too. For hair, usually ETD for me but there is a lot of other great places too.

I agree on the RaC skin. I have two packs for my main, and just had to get one for my alt. I wasn't going to spend that much on her....but couldn't help it. Hair-Gurl 6 has a voucher for a free hair of your choice if you're less than 4 weeks old, and also has really nice hair for sale. Calico Creations is another great hair place. If you didn't make your own shape, Alady has nice ones. Also, check out resell stores. You can get great bargains there. Good luck and welcome to shopping. Just like you, I spent tons when I first started, and still go on spees, even though I have everything I could possibly need. Wait until you buy or rent a place, then you have a whole house to decorate!
