Hello there.

Is there any of you people in here who has any shops is SL. Do you earn enough money so you don't need a job in the real world.

You can just answer a few if you don't want to answer all of them.

1) Why do you earn your money in a virtuel world and not in the RL? (is it the easy way?)

2) Do you life a good life where you can buy unnessassary/expensive stuff. or do you just earn enough to get food on the table and a roof over the head?

3) How long time have you played SL

4) How long time do you plan to play SL?

5) do you have a social life in the RL?

6) How many hours do you use a day on SL

7) How do you earn your money (ex. selling t-shirts)

8) How old are you?

9) are you a male or female

10) Do you think its fun to play SL or just the way to get money?

11) are there any thing you liked to add?

Thank you for your time and i hope you will answer these questions

ps. sorry if my english ist't that good :S i'm from Denmark.

Yes I live in SL.

My meat sack body has a catheter attached and a feeding tube. Downtime can be difficult though.

I don't live in SL, because I already have a RL.
Both don't mix since there's only 24 hours in a day.

Yes, I have a shop, but do I earn enough money to quit my RL job? No. It doesn't even generate enough money to pay for my other SL expenses...
Which I think is true for 99% of the shop keepers in SL.

Look at the statistics from Linden Lab. Only about 600 residents in Second Life have a positive monthly money flow exceeding USD 2000. If anyone can live from SL, they should be among of those 600.

I would believe tha very few residents get a profit from their sales in SL that justifies the amount of work they put down. SL is a hobby, most people pay for that hobby. Some people get a tiny amount of money back. Very, very few get enough back to have an impact on their pesonal real life economy.

My SL work supports my SL live. My RL work supports my RL life. That's actually quite satisfying. From what I hear, the people that support their RL life with SL have all the same issues that come with owning a business in RL with lesser returns on their time invested. (^_^)y

Over the years I made alot of money in SL. I also spent alot of money on SL. NEVER did it even come close to a minimum wage job in income and I was putting in 16-18 hour days to do it. I burned out fast.

Now I just play to have fun. No businesses. Just being with folks I care about.

I'm just a tourist. Working in SL would be the total opposite of why I'm here.

Sure you can make money in SL but you will make more money and it will take up much less time if you just get a 20 hour per week part time job making minimum wage in RL.

Leave the money making to RL and just enjoy SL, learn to create and who knows, you might even be able to pay your tier someday and by a few SL clothes.

There are people who hold full time jobs in SL that make a livable wage. Most all work for corporations or institutions that they themselves did not start. For example Linden Lab employees. But earning enough as a small business owner in SL to cover your RL expenses? Not many do from what I’ve seen.

I agree with the posts above. A few people have managed to make a real living from SL but not many. The other side of the coin is that some people have probably lost serious amounts of RL money in SL through ill-judged investments in land or other business ventures.

My aim has only ever been to earn enough to cover my modest SL costs and possibly a little extra on top of that. For a short time I managed to do that but I come nowhere near that level now.

I could probably sell a lot more of my products, but that would involve me having to spend a lot of time and L$ on finding more outlets and doing more advertising.

It might have been different in the past, but now I think that unless you're established already, the only route to a proper living from SL is through being involved in developing the actual fabric of the 'game' - like new features.

Yes, I live in sl. Also rl too.. However, sl is the only place where you can do so many things in one day. For instance yesterday, my partner and I we put on our "church clothes" (I wore a big pretty fancy hat) and we started off our day of adventure by attending the ballet in Caledon. He and I have never been to a ballet before and it was absolutely wonderful. The animations were seamless, no lag at all. It lasted 1/2 hour and we were not bored in the least. Next, we went to the Phantom of the Opera, Opera House for a great concert and even a greater fireworks show. Most of the attendees include Will and I said it was one of the best fireworks show we ever went to. The sim is just simply gorgeous.

Then, we attended a violinist concert at the Zurich opera, that was fabulous. Our next adventure led us to a concert in San Diego. I was impressed how in San Diego assists newbies become oriented with the game. Final destination was another sim that featured Kim Sieffert and later MrMulti Writer (I think thats what is first name was) performing. My husband Will saw they had 7 seas featured there. God that man loves to fish. Fishing is the OTHER woman. LOL He rezzed our yacht and we kicked back in our "church clothes" and listened to the live entertainment and fished. Only in sl can you fish in your "church clothes" and not get them messed up.

Oh Saturday's adventure was checking out the 10 best places to visited listed in I New World Notes. Those places are awesome.

My sl life is awesome and rl pretty cool too.

I make enough to pay my tier and with a little profit to process and expend in other Internet services and products like RS, MU, Antivirus/firewall license and those kind of things but I need my RL work to pay for my RL things.

Look at the statistics:

16,785,531 Resident accounts (this includes inactive accounts, bots and alts)
940,855 accounts that have logged in over the past 30 days (includes bots and alts)
522,526 accounts that have logged in over the past 7 days (includes bots and alts)

PMLF (Positive Monthly Linden Flow) :
386 people earned between $2,000 and $5,000 USD in December 08
205 people earned over $5,000 USD in December 08

PMLF (Positive Monthly Linden Flow) looks at the flow of Linden™ dollars into a unique user's account BEFORE Linden Lab Charges are applied to the account. These numbers EXCLUDE payments or receipts related to the sale or acquisition of land (since theoretically these represent investments and not business receipts). All numbers are rolled-up among avatar "alts" to the Unique Customer Level. Businesses that are operate Linden dollar exchanges are excluded. Note that some businesses accept payment outside the Linden Economy (e.g. via CC & Paypal) and those numbers are not included in these reports.

So let's say that we have 591 people in SL that earned more than $2,000 USD in the month of December.

That doesn't mean they cashed out that much. They still have to acount for "payments or receipts related to the sale or acquisition of land". So SL landlord who earned $5,000 USD in rent paid in-world, but who pays $5,000 USD in tier to LL on their land, would have an actual net profit of ZERO, even though they show in these figures as earning $5,000 USD.

Most of the "successful" income earners in SL most likely have at least part of their income stream paid to them via PayPal or other methods, which do not show up in-world. So SL landlord who earned $5,000 USD in rent paid via Pay-Pal, but who pays $5,000 USD in tier to LL on their land, would have an actual net profit of ZERO, even though they show in these figures as a LOSS of $5,000 USD.

Still, even if you take LL's stats at face value, if 591 people in SL that earned more than $2,000 USD in the month of December, and there were 522,526 accounts that logged in at least once a week in December, that still means only 0.113% of residents earned more than $2000 USD that month.

SL is not a place to find employment that is a substitute for a real-world job. For the number of hours you spend "working" in SL, the profits that can be earned are less, on average, than any minimum-wage job in any civilized country.

Personally, I work 20 hours a week in SL, make a profit every week, and earn enough to cover my expenses for my avatars in SL, including my land payments, and enough extra to cash out so I can get a few luxuries for my family now and then. But it is nowhere near enough to live of of in RL. I work in SL because I enjoy building and creating things. If I was just looking for more income, I would get a second RL job.

I have a branch of my RL company in SL which works perfectly as a platform for developing RL video content.

My life in RL used to be unusual anyway (film sets are not what most people would call RL) so the line between RL and SL doesn't really exist for me. Its all about imagination, creativity and the power of the stories we tell ourselves.

And Ceera, I have to take this opportunity to say that I always love your thoughtful answers.

That's what I'm wondering.

The estimates and people listed on SLExchange forums are totally off base, too - I know a few people and their real numbers well enough to say that.

Bottom line: if you were making tens of millions of $L, would you go tell everyone so they could copy you? This is the philosophy of a lot of people who are doing well.

The thing about making real money off the grid, even if it's not a "living" is that Linden Lab has demonstrated on numerous occasions that they WILL, at a moments notice change the rules in such a way that shoots holes in your business plan.

They could pull the plug tomorrow. Where would your business be then?

No. I usually make enough to cover my SL needs, but little more. I know some who make a lot more than that, but there numbers are few and far between.

Hello there.

Is there any of you people in here who has any shops is SL. Do you earn enough money so you don't need a job in the real world.

I don't know where to put this but correct me if it should be any where else.

Thanks.

When my shop was open (which I plan to reopen soon), I made enough each month to pay my tier and have a dinner out. That was it. It's fun but I have no intention of living off SL

For the last 6 weeks I have been making enough from my SL job and my stipend to cover anything I wanted to buy plus giving tips to musicians and venues. However... last night I made the mistake of going to the Zyngo parlor and... well... yeah... now I'm broke.
