Maybe I am foolish for trying Free Stuff but I went to the Freebie Store at Orellian (228, 31, 24) and took the Male Avartars Box 15, took it to a sandbox and droped the batman avatar from it and opened it and took it into inventory. I tried on several of the items then tried to take them off. I can take off things like the shirt, but Batman Shape, Batman Skin, and Batman eyes are all shown as worn, and when I right click that item in inventory I dont have Take Off as an option. I have Properties, Rename, Copy Asset UUID, Copy, Wear, and Edit, and regardless of how many times I click wear it still says worn, but I never get Take Off.
How do I get this mask off?

there is no option to take off integral avatar parts. you need *something* in that slot. Grab a skin from another folder, and wear that. It'll replace the existing one.

As Annabelle said, having an avatar without a shape, skin or eyes is not an option. Ewwwww. You can't take them off. Find the ones you want to wear in your inventory and just put them on. The Batman ones will be replaced.

DJ, it's great that you're out there experimenting. And no, it's not just you. I walked around for days as a small, very ugly dragon avatar (freebie) before someone told me I could 'replace' the various compoments. And it's not just freebie stuff A lot of freebie stiff is cool. Have fun!

I am working on a series of articles on SL to help newbies, so it is important to try to learn as much as I can.

Well, you've come to the right place DJ! If you have a skin and shape you like, along with eyes and hair and such, it's useful to make a note of their names, so you can easily find them again in your inventory

Makes me think of a Far Side Cartoon of a Boneless Chicken Ranch.

Cheers, DJ, good luck on your article! Keep asking questions from us here. We would love for SL to be portrayed in a good light. We all went through the learning curve, which is VERY steep. We're all here to help.

From: Annabelle Babii Better yet, put them together in a folder. Ya, but then the next question would be, how do I do that? Answer: create a new folder, drag your favourite items into it and name it something like favourite items.

Personally, I keep a folder called "Avies" with subfolders containing individual looks. Then I just plop the folder on my butt. I made sure to drop a copy of my Mysti-tool in each.

From: DJ Earnshaw I probably should have figured that out, but hey, I am less than three weeks old I couldn't figure out how to get an Alpine Chalet off my head. So that was (one of) my newbie faux pas. And then, lo 5 months later, I was dancing one night and thought I'd be snazzy and change outfits real quickly...and ended up bopping everyone around me with a box... ...twice.

From: Conan Godwin That's actually the folder I keep my socks in. I used to have one on my desktop computer that said "porn". It only had cat pics in it tho, but everyone always wanted to look at it. I had serious problems with my inventory in SL before I reorganised stuff in folders...I still have to search sometimes, but at least the window itself isn't cluttered anymore. Funny enough, i have never worn a box. Only a bag, and only once. And no, it wasn't on my head.

Surely in Second Life a bag is simply a bag-shaped box?

From: Conan Godwin Surely in Second Life a bag is simply a bag-shaped box? No, it wasn't a box. It must have been a prism with handles or something. It looked quite nice on my hand.

From: Alyx Sands No, it wasn't a box. It must have been a prism with handles or something. It looked quite nice on my hand. But if it's a prim then how do you distinguish a box from a bag? Both are just a prim. I mean, I can distinguish a hat from a shoe because they have different intended purposes, but bags and boxes have the same purpose and are made of the same material. Ergo a bag is just a bag-shaped prim box.

Reading this brought back the horrific memory of when I turned into a small white cat, and sobbed in RL because I thought I'd lost the 'me' that I'd been so picky about creating!!
I've never changed into anything else since, even though I know how it all works now...
