It's called a release candidate, but the release manager isn't so certain about it*: From: Stephany Linden We’ve been reading your blog comments and receiving your in-world messages and crash reports throughout the day. We know that some of you are experiencing crashes upon starting today’s 1.18.4 Release Candidate, and apologize to those of you who have been on the receiving end of this (I’m one of them!). Decisions, decisions... * http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/10/19/crashes-and-todays-release-candidate

Not if you're planning on texturing anything. (The "Lag Meter" is pretty cool, though.)

From: Qie Niangao Not if you're planning on texturing anything. (The "Lag Meter" is pretty cool, though.) Grrrrr... I finally swapped back to the regular viewer after having tried to resize a texture for the 5th time and having it change BOTH farking horizontal and vertical. I didn't bother with the lagometer, or much else. Build tools is the FIRST thing I test

Maybe they should rename it to "Crash Candidate."

This RC is not one of the better ones they've put out. The display of Group info seems especially buggy.

I've tried the new release candidate. So far, so good. Two things I've noticed right off the top:
It seems to remember my client menu setting (I don't have to re-enable the camera constraints thing). Maybe it's a quirk, who knows.
Also, the mini-map no longer shows T's or inverted T's to indicate whether an avatar is above or below.

From: Malachi Petunia Should I run today's release candidate? Why not? You can help the Lindens to stabilize the product by providing feedback. And if does not work for you, just start the official/normal client again from your applications folder.

SL residents are afraid to download anything put out by the tech team.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Downloading fixes has been a major problem here as we all know. Therefore, no one wants to take a chance and mess up their game more then it is now due to downloading anything they put out.
Sounds crazy but it's true. Those of us who have been here long enough know what usually happens after downloading these "fixes" and others.

There are some useful fixes in the latest release as well. The float text fix is particularly handy and has been annoying me for months. But I've yet to try texturing in world. That could be a deal breaker. Ah well... It is a "Release Candidate" after all ... Stick with the official viewer if you want more predictable behaviour.

I NEVER d/l anything until I have to.
According to the original blog posting for this latest release ]]]]]]] Today’s Second Life 1.18.4 Release Candidate Viewer contains bug fixes and soon-to-be-released new features. The new features are:
* Search * Lag Meter * German, Korean, and Japanese Language Improvements * Friends and the Minimap [[[[[[[[
How the hell does the above manage to break texturing?????????? Is there a term for code 'structure' that is worse than spaghetti?
The thing even crashes a Linden's system. Do they do any internal testing? Is this the Tao at work? No Linden will test another Linden's work because that might involve being perceived as an attack? So no bonus points coming out of the Love Machine for anyone with a professional approach to the product???
I despair!

I used it for a few hours last night, without any trouble. Admittedly I was not attempting to build anything, I'll try that today.
It does have an attractive list of bug fixes in the release notes, at least five things I was very happy to see. Top of my list was crashing while camming arround. They claim to have fixed it, and I tested that last night. With the 1.18.3.whatever current official release, I risk crashing just turning around, it's been very flaky. The RC was very stable and solid, even camming across a whole sim and through some shops.
Just my L$2 based on what I've seen so far; if the build tools are borked then that trumps any other advances, really.

From: DoteDote Edison [...]the mini-map no longer shows T's or inverted T's to indicate whether an avatar is above or below. Oh, right, forgot about that. Now they seem to be tiny "up" and "down" arrows--mighty subtle at my screen resolution, but they do distinguish between above and below, like their "T" predecessors.

From: Sindy Tsure The did a little more than that.. Yes. The 'bug fixes' were mentioned in my quote of the Release blog posting. So the question is unchanged: "How the hell does the above manage to break texturing??????????" I've come across developments in which the standard of code structure was absolutely abysmal, but the thing moved along because the programmers had a grasp of what did what and how. That doesn't seem to apply in LL. It's clear from the history that they need to do comprehensive regression testing on *everything*. That's because they seem to reintroduce bugs already fixed, and break things that are not directly associated with what they are setting out to fix. Some companies have software engineering. LL seem to have software chaos. It's not bleeding edge techology that they're at. It's blending edge technology. Take a few modules here, a few from there, and oh - let's try that one - stick them in the blender and see what comes out the other end. Et Voila! A release candidate. I'd really love to know. What exactly did they do that caused the borking of horizontal/vertical texturing. What was it that they were fixing that broke something else? *Of course* there will be bugs, especially when one considers the development history and the state of the code. Yes it's 'only' a release candidate and not the current release. But how in hell do they manage to reintroduce bugs and break unrelated things? What worries me about the future of SL is that although open sourcing can save the client, the server code must be a complete kludge. It's tragic. I love SL.
