Carp! Incredibly sorry and profuse apologies. I am backtracking and cleaning my post.
NP - I reread mine and I suppose it might not have been real clear to those that do not know me real well here (even if I am one of the forum goddesses)

If someone is as precariously on the edge as she appears to be, then yes, a poorly timed hurtful post could have a dire consequence. No more, no less. There are times when one should tread lightly, regardless of how cynically they consider such a thread.
Yes, while there is really no way of know, one way or the other, the true mindset of someone posting like that, it is far better to err on the side of caution and take care to not make it worse.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Cool I did not know that you had regained your crown. I remember sending you the invite to be a geek princess when you lost your title. BTW that offer did not have an expiration date.

Also want to suggest in this thread....referring to the other thread....that debating the merit or analyzing further all the nuances of what is going on....IN that thread....is probably not wise. Not convinced it is wise to do so in this thread either.....considering the timing.....hopefully she has enough IMs to keep her busy, and no time to read.

It's a good point. While there wasn't anything specific to her situation, it isn't the time or place.

I had replied directly and in good faith to something Pep said, only to be rewarded with another snide comment. As if I needed another reminder. LOL.

While there is always a danger of saying the wrong thing and great care does need to be exercised. Leaving a thread hanging with uncaring flames and no reasonable responses to balance them is also a danger in and of itself. I know that many are suffering around the globe right now and I am hopeful that others are taking to heart what is being said there.

You can be guaranteed that a bare minimum of ONE OTHER PERSON is reading that thread and digesting some thoughts.....deciding whether to reach out or not.

Definitely shouldn't hurt to add some thoughtful words to balance it out.....we can salvage some good thoughts and intentions with the op as we have made private contact.....but give some consideration to that minimum of ONE other person reading and digesting and making a decision on whether or not it is worth reaching out.

Not saying that the Q&A board is the place to handle all the calls reaching out......just saying some very helpful thoughts, resources, and phone numbers were given there, that someone else may use and WILL use. Guaranteed.

Ventured over to the Support for Healing Island that Bradley suggested and tooled around. Grabbed a yellow ribbon card and a list of meeting times to keep in my pocket. Suggest some others do the same.....might come a moment when you need to hand that over quickly to someone....or make your own notecard with the resources that you personally feel comfortable giving and have it ready to go. Might come a moment when you need to use it yourself.

I've never encountered a forum troll. Probably because I am quite capable of listening to people who opinions differ from mine and not taking it personally. I have never muted anyone in a forum and never would, surrounding yourself with people who only think like you is the path to stagnation and is a form of mental masturbation.

Listen to your critics, listen to the other side, because you never know, they may have a point and even change your mind. Censorship is the death of freedom and free expression.

And like has been said for what seems like a lifetime on the internet, if someone's posts bother you, don't read them. :)

I don't think that the idea proposed by the OP is a good one. It assumes that mutual antagonism is always or almost always the cause of putting someone on ignore, which is not true. I have one person on ignore in the forums because her posts irritate me. I have never been in a spat with her, in fact, I very much doubt she would recognize my name. There is no reason to block her from seeing my posts--just because she irritates me it doesn't follow that I irritate her.

Also, the quote function overrides ignore. If anyone quotes the person I have on ignore, I see the post in the quote. In situations where two posters were mutually antagonistic, and they were mutually set to ignore, chances are that they would see each other's posts anyway through quotes.

The idea that someone should be "reported to the moderator" just because she is put on ignore by a lot of people is based on the premise that such a person is a troll or a trouble-maker. I don't think that's true. I would become very hesitant to put someone on ignore if it fed into some sort of official warning.

As it is, I can use ignore as a weak prop to my impulse contol. If it resulted in a two-way ignore, and possibly a report to the moderator, I wouldn't use it at all.

Pretty much agree with everything said by Darien, maybe we could do with the 1 user agreed button idea from over the road to save space!

We only have one tool at our disposal right now and that is to put someone on our ignore list but it really does not accomplish very much. BUT what if we had the ability to not only block seeing their posts, but ignore also blocked them from seeing our posts?????????

This would be an excellent feature and would stop so much drama.

There are certain people that go out of their way to attack others or *groan/disagree* or whatever intentionally. If we could make it so these attack prone/rude people could not read our posts it would make forums a much nicer place.

No one wants to be ostracized and the moment that person saw they were being frozen out of entire threads because so many people had them on ignore, they would stop or leave - and maybe even apologize.

As in Pep's posts disappearing? At that time we still had moderation in the forum. Strife did not play Pep's game and he would not have put up with it today either.

That might have been moderation by Katt rather than Strife, since Katt was very active moderating the forums at that time. I was even scolded once then for calling an Ad Farmer something derogatory.

More likely. Strife left over a year ago if I remember correctly. But Katt wouldn't delete posts either, I recall. She preferred to "disemvowel" them.

If you were indeed referring to missing Pep posts, it is common for him to go back and delete his posts long after the fact. Make of that what you will.

*groans* I am getting old. Could have swore that Strife left last December, not the year before. But yes, my feeble brain has been jogged and there is some clarity now. Katt could have done it. She eventually changed her "style" from that disemvoweling carp.

or you could just frequent that certain third-party forum and cozy up to the right people.

Decentralized Moderation. Anyone who has encountered trolls can see the enormous benefit from this system. Instead of moderators hopelessly trying to deal with a never ending flood of abuse reports and kicking people, you let the users effectively do the same.
