Am I the only one in Second Life that hates gestures? It seems all of my (5) friends absolutely love them, and use them every chance they get, and occasionally just make up new chances.

I find their only usefulness is in something like a class that you teach often, but even then they can be screwy, so copying and pasting from a notecard would be a better choice.

I don't understand why so many people feel the need to take some old meme, or some random sound byte and animation, shove them together, and then run about spouting this nonsense.

Can anyone explain the liking of these things to me?

ETA:: They are one of the very tip-top reasons that I dislike social gatherings, and especially clubs, in Second Life. They annoy me so much that I just avoid being around any medium/large amount of people.

It's one of those things you "get" or you don't. It's hard to explain. It's a way of "sharing/interacting" even though it seems like it's not.

Just like cybering is one of those things you "get" or you don't.

I happen to like gestures. Even after 2 years.

It might have something to do with people doing what they can do. Emitting gestures made by someone else is easy, so lots of people do it, while actually saying something clever is a bit more challenging.

I have a suspicion that the explanation for a lot of the behavior of user's in SL has to do with drug use, abuse, overuse, etc. This could apply to repeatedly finding the same old gestures hilarious. They're funny as hell if you'd have a third of a fifth of vodka.

Hmm, I wonder if a third party viewer writer could add a "gesture filter" to a client. Possibly even a regular expression based filter, so you could add a "don't show messages starting with "Howlz" or some such.

I think a lot of gestures are funny/cute... once. Just like jokes and stories, repetition ruins them.

Agreed. Most gestures are amusing THE FIRST TIME. After that, no so much....

you have to remember this is the same category of people that used to love to macro-bomb chatrooms with bad ansi art back in the day...

I've found there are plenty of good uses in roleplay for gestures, at least ones that are made with a bit of care, coupling emote actions with animations and occasionally sounds, like some of the simpler default actions in the library.

nit wits that replay crap like 'howlz' over and over get muted. I don't like chat spam any more than the other kind

No, I hate them too. Some I can tolerate more than others, but the snorting laugh and some others just grate on my last nerve.

The type of dance clubs I go to are more the romantic, jazz, Avilion type places so very few gestures are used there. But if I'm checking out a new place, I start hearing gesture spam and I turn around and leave.

A few times I've gone to clubs I normally wouldn't to support a particular DJ. When the gestures start, I mute the person. It almost becomes a game in IM with me and my partner - "How many people will NOT be on our mute list by the end of the evening...lol." At one club, the only ones left were the DJ and his date - but I only came to hear the DJ anyway so I was happy.

And what's with everyone slapping their own a$$? Do they realize it makes them *look* like what they're slapping?

Sadly it is mainly due to the utter failure of the interface to permit easy expression of spontaneous true emotions that leads to the use(and abuse) of canned expressiveness.
I rarely use gestures myself. It tends to coerce me to employ more expressive text in my chats. I wouldn't do away with gesture capability for the usefullness they can provide to the machinma community.

I guess some gestures are OK, being that they can be used for classes (as mentioned) or easy quick information.

however when I think gesture, I tend to think the crappy stuff because that is what we see the most

and someone mentioned the ASCII chat bombs, oh it happens in SL too
people make ASCII art gestures that spam across the screen, annoying as hell.

I do not go to clubs for many reasons, and chat spam due to gestures is one of them.

they have their place, unfortunately many people do not know what the place for them is

Don't like them, don't use them other than the applause gesture if I'm at a venue where it seems appropriate such as the runway show I was at a few weeks ago. Everyone used it in moderation; as the model came on, and as she walked off. It was quite subdued, surprisingly.

I can't stand it at clubs most of all especially during a live performance. Totally takes away from what everyone should be doing - listening to the music. As others mention, it's one of the main reasons I stopped going to clubs ages ago and rarely will go see live music inworld to this day. Those "woots" and "howls" grate on my every last nerve.

I wonder how much business a place would get if they built a club that banned gestures (and made it perfectly clear gestures were not welcome)

I know I would go there, and if people were there, I would most likely actually socialize a bit there.

Gestures are the salt and pepper of chat to me. With giggles, laughs, "yay"s, claps, and best of all "Konnichiwa! (^_^)y"... I totally have fun and flavor my chat. =^-^=

Look at the bright side... At least I didn't script my shoes to play a loop of "This is why I'm hot!" while I walk... Yes, I've seen someone actually do that. (=_=)

Nehehe. =^-^=

... then again.... Maybe that's why my friends list is forever shrinking instead of growing. (u.u)

What she said. I tend to use them to augment my character, and allow me to interact a bit more.

At the same time, I also am not fan of "Hoooo" or others that are overused, and I never understand making it the core of your interaction.

Yeah ditto.

I don't use em and I don't much care for them. But that's personal preference. They simply don't really reflect the type of person I am so......I don't use them. They do get on my nerves a bit at clubs....but then I rarely go to clubs anyway. The only time I really notice just how annoying they are is at live events. I can't tell you how many times I've popped into a live performance.....only to have it totally overwhelmed with ridiculous gestures.......I always feel bad for the performer. They are literally being talked over and in the real world that would be so totally not cool. In those cases.....I TP out. I just can't stand witnessing someone being disrespected like that.......even if they don't see it that way.....I do.....and it makes me feel bad. :o

I hate when it distracts or drown out the live performer.
03-14-2009 21:05
I find them most annoying at live music venues. Sometimes it is so loud it drowns out the performer. I find myself distracted from the performance for trying to figure where they are at so I can mute them. On occasion I believe it contributes to chat lag. Certain ones I do find ingrating and I believe it is more the person that just WONT stop than gesture themselves. I view them like bots, like it or not there are purposes for them.

You can mute sounds, but leave media and music on, so that you still get any sound from streaming media (Also, voice if that's needed).

That's one thing that I love about SL, it has various sound layers that you can mute selectively.

I"m a fan of the gestures used in a manner that enhances the atmosphere, not detract from from it . Yes I hooo! Stomp my feet ( in both worlds) when the music is going at full tilt.

If the gestures are outta control, i'm out. As for the shoe noises..... Annoying~ Respect the music, respect the artist, respect the people around you~, take your clackied clack off, and don't bog up the chat with gestures so that no one can see anything in the room because the chat box has taken over the screen.

Oh yeah and while we are at it.. those who use the gesture " Show some Linden$Love" get a new phrase already.. sheesh sooo tacky! :P
