Getting TV's to work

Hi.
I bought a TV from a shop and it didn't work- not even the Left click menus. The vendor was little to no help at all.
Later I bought a radio and it too didn't work, and I did some investigating and went to the menu of About Land and in the general tab and set my group, to the one offered by my landlord.

I'm looking at TV's again, this time at a different vendor and his card says:

From: someone
If your land is owned by a group, be sure to deed the TV to the land owning group (This is different from just setting it to a group), otherwise it WILL NOT work correctly.

I'm only a few weeks old here at SL, but About Land shows me as the owner, and now I belong to that group. I'm not sure how to deed an object to a group- or if that is even applicable to me.

Any suggestions how I can get a flat screen TV to work?

Thanks in advance.

if you deed it to the group, you will no longer be able to take it back in to your inventory, or move it, or have control of it.

are you the owner of the group?

If you decide to deed it to group.
Right click on the TV, Select Properties then:
1. Be sure you are wearing the group tag for the group owned land.
2. See pic below and push the big deed button. You *may* have to check the share with group box first. I am not in SL (am in OpenSim Standalone) so I can't test it.

1. Edit the item, go to the contents tab. Most gizmos come with instructions for their use. Read them.

Read them.

Did I say read them? Read them. Get in the habit of looking for instructions this way. Some items have quirky access lists or permissions issues and you need to follow the instructions.

2. Deeding is easy. Click share with group box and then the deed button.

3. You cannot do #2 if:

a. You don't own the group, or
b. The group only permits certain people to deed objects, and you're not one of them.

If you own the group, no problem. If you don't have deeding power, talk to someone who does.

4. Make sure it's the same group as that which owns the land. If your landlord owns the land personally, your landlord must own the item. Media devices get permission from the owner of the land - either an avatar individually or a group.

Offer her a nice job where her nails don't get chipped and she won't mark her make-up. Keep the work place cool she doesn't sweat in her wig. Allow reasonable latitude in dress-code, or provide a flattering uniform. Never refer to her as male.

Oh, not that kind of TV then?

...About Land shows me as the owner...
So then you do *not* want to deed the object to group. An object that is supposed to set the parcel's media and audio streams (the "TV" and "radio", respectively) *must* be owned by the parcel owner. (So, if the land is group-owned, the devices must be group-deeded.
  • If the parcel owner is an individual, the devices must be owned by that same individual.)

The reasons you might *set* (not deed) an object to the group is for parcel prim management (including keeping it from getting auto-returned) on land set to the same group, and to enable some scripts that match their own object group with the active group of an agent (somebody they sense or that touched the object or whatever).

As for what ails the TV and radio... hard to guess. Hopefully they're mod perm, so you could try to right-click, Edit, and from the Tools menu at the top of the page, click ""Set Scripts Running in Selection" and then "Reset Scripts in Selection" to see if that will return them to sanity.

(One unlikely possibility is that you may have not gotten all the scripts in the copy you bought. I just had a customer with this problem last night: she bought an item at my shop, and her copy contained only 11 of the 12 scripts inside--and not the all-important one that responds to touch. I couldn't get item delivery to fail again, and it was just a straight "buy copy" sale, so... just a fluke, I guess, but one that could be a big problem if it starts happening regularly.)

    _________
[* ETA: This isn't strictly true. It just works if this is done, and if it's not, one is at the mercy of very strange interactions between parcel permissions and group permissions... stuff like the TV only working when a group owner is in the sim, for example.]

    LMFAO

OK there'll be sensible answers here so I am going to plug a product. If you are in the market for a TV try looking up Zone Brand - great You Tube enabled TVs - low prim version 11 prims, the deluxe one is 41 (I think) but you can search You Tube and get the results on their own little screen in the main screen!

Only works for MP4s (not the fault of the maker) and the customer support is superb!

Thank you all for your help, there sure are a lot of things to learn in SL. Special thanks to Blot who took the time to help me in world.

The TV I was looking at last night wasn't that expensive and doubles as a texture slide show so I went ahead and got it. I didn't try and deed it, and sent an IM to the creator who's card emphasizes support.

If it won't work as a TV, I'll just use the slideshow function so at least all is not lost. :)

Thank you Cherry I'll take a look.

    Yes.
I rezzed the TV I got last night onto the floor per instruction along with the remote. Clicking the TV turns it off/on just like it says, and the remote invokes a HUD with station choices. The TV displays a blue no signal message. Perhaps the creator has/will IM a solution. I won't be in world for another 8 hours or so to check.

I don't know if this is a possible solution, but I noticed some shops sell programable DVD players. Not sure if those are also effected by deeds or groups. It would be nice to have one and play through a TV.

I couldn't make sense with my first TV's instructions.
I got his flat screen off the wall at the venders sim, next to a huge sign that said:
"HOW TO BUY AND USE OUR TV'S"
Last night the vender only offered this IM help: "There is no such document". :(

I rez his TV and one side is black, the other side has a blue/yellow CTX (I think it is) logo.
Instructions say click the TV for a station hud, but clicking does absolutely nothing.

From there the instructions is not clear, It says to drag the item into my inventory and when I do, all it does is drag the blue logo off of the prim, leaving one side light wood.
The texture ends up in my inventory, which can not be placed back on the prim.

Blot was very nice in giving me a free TV last night which I'm anxious to check out.

I'll be following this thread, as I'm looking for a little 512 to put up a clubhouse for friends and I to watch DVDs in together. I want to make sure that, if I buy mainland, I can actually get a DVD player and TV, set it up and have it work with little or no fuss.

    The saga continues :(

I bought a Zone box. The box should be deeded to a group. I joined the region owners group and followed "How to deed" but the deed button doesn't come active. Thinking I lack sufficient permission in the group, I contacted a group officer, who told me only the region owner can deed the object. So I sent a message to the region owner asking them to deed it for me, but they said I joined the wrong group and to contact the device creator. :(

I asked if they could suggest a group, they told me that I should create one.
    (Sigh)
I get to learn how to create a group for my land.

Does this all make any sense?

You do not need to deed it if the parcel is not group owned. You only need to deed if you are on land that is owned by a group. If the parcel does not say (Group Owned) it isn't. You are on an estate, and the parcel is in your name, not the estate owner group's. Just set it down and change the channel.

So did you get it to work. Are you even on group owned land? I have a mainland plot I purchased at auction recently and cannot get the video URL's to work either. I type in the URL, but all I get is the webpage, and no flash player or movie. I know someone out there knows what to do here. Its not like this even requires much of a script, just a texture and URL, and a simple script to pause and play...

Right: It's usually much easier to just get the parcel settings to work manually, without any "TV" script at all, so one at least knows what's what on the parcel as a starting point. A couple of suggestions:

First, if it really is a Flash thing you're trying to see, you're Out Of Luck: needs to be in some QuickTime-compatible format. (There's a lot of interest in "Flash-on-a-prim" so probably someday, but not now.)

Also, if you're seeing a webpage instead of the media, you might want to check the About Land / Media tab's settings for "Media type" at the top of the dialog... if it's not set to Movie (video/*), you won't see playback.

Come to think of it... I wonder how old TV scripts handle that complexity now. Probably they tried to make the functions backwards-compatible somehow, but I know I've been listing that stuff explicitly for parcel media scripts (I never paid detailed attention to them before that setting was available).

Have you ticked the play streaming media option under preferences?

    Edit, preferences, audio & video.

not sure if this was mentioned, or if it is even still this way

but.. once you deed the object, you need to have the group active to be able to use it (same with set to group, need to activate the group to use the item)

(as I said, not sure if this is still how it is) but better to mention if by chance it is still that way

Only certain objects work that way. Some objects, anyone can touch and change the station. The tuner in my lounge doesn't care what group is active.

ah so depends on how they scripted it, gotcha

I only ever used a freebie TV and that was only to learn how to do it, and it needed group active to be able to use it :)

Ok, I tried a URL link to youtube, and I got an image of the youtube webpage the video is on, and at the top it said, highlighted in pink, "The video you have requested is not available. If you have recently uploaded this video, you may need to wait a few minutes for it to process."

The video played just fine moments before when I watched it on Youtube, so I am not sure what this message means as far as second life is concerned.

could someone post a movie URL link in this thread they know for sure works, that way we can try it out and see what happens? That might be the easiest way for everyone to figure out what the issues are for them.

This is the setting which allowed me to see the video. (VS Blue screen)

I see the video and audio, but everyone else sees a blue no signal message and haven't messed with it for maybe a week.

"My" land isn't deeded to a group and I am listed as owner.

The fact that I can see it, change channels etc tells me at least I'm on the right track.
