It does feel a lot differeint with the friends list and Im window being two different things, it is definately going to take some getting used to.
(Sorry to hijack the thread but this seemed interesting)

It seems you never used SL without the communicate window? We used to have Friends as both a "New IM" tab on the IM window (somewhat similar to how it is now) and in a separate window for the longest time and many (most?) people hated the idea of giving up one in favour of the other.

Since you never used the old UI before you used Nicholaz', do you have a preference for either one now (ignoring the getting used to it)?

I like the the way they have it set up right now on the SL viewer, but if the Nicholas will work for me, I am willing to sacrifice.

I couldn't dream of it.

Just forget I was trying to help. Remind me not to do that again.

There is nothing in your machine specs that looks like a problem. Some people in the past have had issues with the ATI 1300 and Vista, but even those look like they were solved by a video driver update. I assume you've already tried that ... if not, do remember to uninstall the current driver before installing the new one.

I hope stripping out other programs and services running on your machine does the trick, 'cause I'm out of ideas.

If the crashes really bother you, and no one else has an idea to pass on, you might try the truly desperate ploy of actually reading the crash logs from SL:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\SecondLife\logs

Nicholaz's logs end up in the 'Program Files\SecondLife' directory.

But I wouldn't recommend log reading unless you've been a developer at some point.

Good luck!

It's nothing like that, I've just gotten so used to using the two screens, I don't understand how I would ever be able to back to just the one. :)

Sorry, it sounded like "stupid idea I've already tried that of course" ;)
I haven't got any experience with dual screens at all (instead I have two computers sharing the SAME screen...), I just thought that was something out o the ordinary that could be the reason. I always have both firewall (SPF, used to be Kerio) and antivirus (Antivir) running, but I tend to shut down desktop search, because the indexing sometimes does funny things.

I'm just wondering what it is going to take to run SL smoothly without crashing as much. Sometimes I can go for a while before I crash, sometimes I'll crash, log in and crash before I finish logging in. I just seek stability. :)

Next question:

How often should I clear cashe?

This has been debated. Some say frequent cache clearing causes starin on the asset server, so it should be done sparingly. I do it anytime I update a viewer, or if I am having some sort of difficulty. If not, onece every couple of weeks.

So far, I crash at least once a day.

It's obvious somwhere in that hi tech machine of yours , something is not agreeing with SL, I wish I knew. My ebay bought Dell is a Yugo in comparison to your ferrari, but I have few problems...*shrugs*

I clear cache when I'm having problems of some sort or other. But generally once every two weeks suffices for me.
One crash a day btw is not that bad..... I'm not saying it's good, but I've heard a lot lot lot worse.

I used to use Nicholaz's client, back when it was much more stable than the Linden one. However after Nicholaz was able to get most of his fixes into the Official viewer, the advantage of the Nicholaz Client is less apparent. In fact Nicholaz himself posted recently he would be putting development on the back burner for awhile because there's not a lot to do. :) But it does still offer a lot of favorable tweaks and you can't go wrong using it. :)

Has anyone using BE tried using it with the new viewer? Is it working? I just installed BE two days ago and have seen majority stability improvements. I'd hate to lose that now!

True, he notes that there is little difference stability wise in the viewes. Since Nick's was the first stable one i used, i will continue to favor his, mainly because with Old School, I can have the old chat window/friendslist setup, and there is no voice client for me to have to disable.

I was wondering the same thing. I guess I'm not installing 1.18.4 until I absolutely have to. :)

I tried the OnRez Client. It was okay. But the interface is completely different, and from what i hear, in terms of stability, it's far behind either the official or the Nicholaz. In fact i'm sure it's not even up to date with this week's client release. So feel free to try it, but if you want stability, probably not a good choice.

/me dives for cover.

/me shivers....

BSOD?! Wow.... I will treat the onrez like the plague unless I start hearing better things from it. I really do love the way it looks, but by the sounds of it, they still have a lot more work to do before they can really and confidently release it.
