Well.....I read profiles all the time....people interest me.....I don't IM anyone if they're profile has any off putting comments like 'mind your own business' or what ever....I'm simply curious about people in general and if someone seems to have some open and friendly comments, or there's a some common interests expressed.....I'll say hello. I also compliment people when I see something cool. I'm not out to to pry into personal lives or space.... but a good conversation can and has produced good friends.
That's sort of the way RL works too....you don't know anything about anyone until ya open your mouth.... sometimes ya connect...sometimes not.... that's just the way human beings are. I hold no fault on anyone who remains private in SL or RL....

As for stalkers...I don't know.....I guess some folks take offense if you IM them and bring up something you saw in their profile....which seems silly to me.....if you don't want it read or seen....don't put it in a public profile. but whatever....I don't worry about the 'scared people'.

Good gravy, people actually put stuff in their profile???
And people read those? I think the only one I've ever bothered to look at is my landlady's.

/me puts more stuff on her list of things to do...

Arent profiles the best opportunity to "share"? I read them like I read obits in the real world. I hate the boring ones that say "Here to be friends with everyone" or "Dont IM me I might ignore you"
Make them mini-stories.
Some of them sound like lyrics from Amy MacDonald's songs. I love those.

Profile....stalking. Hmmmmm. Just when I thought I'd come close to hearing it all.......I've read through this thread and followed the links, and am now more puzzled than when I started. I make it a practice to look at folks' profiles; it gives me insight on how to relate to them without giving inadvertent offense. I pretty much take it as read that my profile is going to be looked at, as well; there is absolutely nothing in it that is supposed to be secret. If someone gives me hassle, I TP home. If the hassler manages to follow me there, I simply ban their mizz'ble carcass off'n my land (with or without my trusty Mystitool, depending on my mood) and the matter is settled.

Shave off eyebrows and draw them back on.

I did that when I was 11 for Halloween; I went trick or treating as a Vulcan. Had to have decent eyebrows, ya know. :p

My favorites are all the threatening messages people put at the end of their tidbits about their friends. "Anyone that hurts sonso will have to deal with me" ...or some that are much more violent in nature. Typically, the people that say the most about 'save your drama' are the ones knee deep in it. Run away, run far far away, because I will bet if you dont you will some how hurt sonso and deal with the nondrama person! :p

Im not certain what the term 'profile stalker' means either. I have seen many profiles with stuff like...DONT IM me, dont do this, dont do that, dont fecking talk to me....and Im always very tempted to do the opposite just to be contrary....but I suspect the person is so up their own arse that any response I got would be muffled ;)

Oh, you're referring about many shop owners, those who sell stuff. This is their basic stuff they love putting in their profiles.

I'm so sick of hearing about the word drama in sl. It's all you see in sl and yes, on profiles mainly. So childish.

You can get profile stalker T-shirts at http://www.cafepress.com/ethrift/650599 .

I think it's similar to newspaper stalkers, people that track down the location of newspapers and read them.

No I think in these instances the person who puts "no profile stalkers" in their profile is the idiot.:)

so if i put "profile stalker" in my profile i`m no longer an idiot? :p

/me goes back to the corner

besides, anyone who stalks some trough their picks needs to visit a mental health institution
anyone thinks they`re getting stalked, should wonder why they have the info in public so they can be stalked
anyone thinks saying "no / not" in their profile for a certain thing is 1 way to sure get attention lol

So this is how it goes:

a. I put things in my profile for you to read.

b. You read my profile.

c. That therefore makes you a profile stalker and that's a bad thing.

Color me confused.

Well, I don't put anything about my RL on my profile except that I came to SL from UK. Also the testbot alt that my RL 'hired' has nothing about their RL, apparently.

A lot of people have alts (apparently!). Presumably in many cases people have one av that plays their real self and others that play fantasy characters. What's wrong with that? In my case the alt is just a zombie testbot so nobody would find it very interesting anyaway.

I have noticed, while looking at peoples' profiles, that more than one or two warn that they don't like profile stalkers. But what is a profile stalker? I mean, if you put info in your profile it's there to be read. I assume that people read my profile and I don't consider it stalking. So is it when people read your profile and then start asking further questions?

I think it goes beyond that nowadays. Back in the day, you could see when someone was online by looking at their profile. Now you can turn that off. Now it's advanced scripting that helps the stalkers.

Notice that they don't contact you until you are online. You didn't get any offlines, but some time after you login to SL, you get an IM, and another, and possibly another. Is it just coincidence? Perhaps. But it could also be these online notifiers that are sold in SL. Someone can put in your Avatars name into a notecard and it tells them when you are online. I imagine that some can even log your time online to a database somewhere and keep track of how often you are in SL (without your knowledge or consent).

I'm not saying everyone who uses these is a stalker. I am sure there are perfectly good reasons to use them.

QFT.

(tangent rant)

I hate blank profiles. Maybe they're lazy, maybe they're paranoid.
To me, a blank profile is as polite as wearing a ski mask in a bank.

No groups, no profile, no picks.... No service.

ok let me see if i understand this:

ok profile stalkers read profiles to get ideas on where to shop
there are some people who dont like that
ergo: reading a profile=stalking now?

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I think the stalkers are the ones who sift through your picks and your groups to basically follow you around in SL.

"Oh hey, fancy meeting you again" type nonsense.
