What is the purpose of "Whisper"?

Before we only had "shout" and "say", now SL added "whisper". When I use "whisper", others can't hear what I say even they are standing right next to me, so what is the purpose of "whisper"?

wisper is like 5 meter range ..so you cannot be heard 6 meters away and conversations overriding other conversations

not far..maybe the length of a couch..you can normally be heard i think 20 or 21 meters away then you have to shout..
i'm sure there are other reasons for wisper but you can say something to a few people close by that you don't want a bunch to hear without having to im everyone..

Er.. Exactly 5 meters?

Whisper has always been available to scripts but they never had it built into the client before. Personally, I like it - useful for busy places..

You could make a prim that was 5 SL metres wide and check it with that.

actually that is a good idea..make a prim and go down to size and in the x and y type 10,000 in each of those..then turn it into a cylinder and stand in the middle..that will give you an idea of 5 meter around you that people could hear you on wisper

Is there a way to specify that you want to whisper without choosing it from the menu beside the chat bar?

You mean like the ctrl-enter thing for shouting? Nope :( But along with the 10 meter whisper range, you do get a nice cheesy animation to make up for it.

A few alt clients support Shift+Enter for avatar whispering. Cool View is one of them. (^_^)y

The official 1.22 viewer does, too.

/me didn't realize the official viewer DIDN'T support Shift-Enter it's been that long since I've used it. It's enabled in the Hippo OpenSim viewer as well. The only very minor problem is that every now and then I don't release the shift key in time after ending with an exclamation point or something and end up unintentionally whispering.

I believe "whisper" is heard in a 10 m radius (not 5 m as some said here), "say" in a 20 m radius and "shout" in a 100 m radius.

At last that's my experience and what the wiki confirms: http://www.lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=llWhisper

:( at no key combo, and thank you for the warning about the animation! I didn't notice it before, so I cammed around and....not good.

:D

There is an odd little vestige in the SL sources, chat was supposed to come from a sphere in front of the avatar instead of centered, so that the 10/20/100m chat spheres would be located 5/10/50 meters in front of the avatar. But i'll be darned if I can find a situation where those offsets are actually used.

it is a 10 m radius sphere which would be 5m in any direction with you being in the middle of the sphere.

whisper is very useful for objects that talk to people, such as vendors, rent boxes, lucky chairs, others' attachments (collars and such), etc. its a polite way to avoid spamming uninvolved people.
