camping with Sleek a text based client while I watch movies or play eve or go to bed make about 50 up to 100 a day.

So $0.15-0.40 worth then, depending on the exchange rates? Awesome.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

2. Any SL source of income, whether it be as a creator/landlord, creator/seller, hostess/dancer etc. bears the danger of detracting from your overall SL experience if you look to it primarily with an eye towards drawing an SL income. If you don't draw a fair amount of happiness from the act itself of creating and overseeing your estate, creating things as a seller, hostessing parties and venues etc. you'll have little to nothing to fall back on during moments of frustration.

QFT, if you don't have fun, what's the point? unless you're cashing in better than your day job.... in which case, more power to you =)

totally worth it when im broke and disabled and no cc's since i maxed them paying health care bills until i get a disability trial...

plus im up to little over 8500L from camping since i began it, I dont need to buy land or whatnot I buy gadgets or make my own and spend rest when needed..

so yep use sleek and camp away if you have to, few days at 50-100L per day and you can buy any clothes/gadgets ya need.

works for me and gets the job done.

guess it dont work for you, you must need to make money since you speak about exchange rates, i dont play the game to make money i play to have fun 1 or 2 hours every few days as downtime to my main game, to enjoy music etc.

and for that nothing beats it :)

Curious... you're too broke to be able to buy L$, but you're not broke enough to play a $15/month forced subscription game?

the text based client uses very little resources so can just minimize it and do whatever...

What is a text based client for camping?

Also, with regard to the person that runs multiple clients and camps continuoulsy, when camping normally just as myself, I have to usually click a box or something every 15-30 min, depending on the camp. Where can you camp continuously without having to be by the keyboard to click?

TIA to anyone who can answer.

Not to mention, he's able to afford a capable computer and a high speed internet ISP.

I think the "broke geek in Mom's basement" has replaced the stereotype of the hillbilly living in a shack, but with a big color TV.

1. A text based client is a way to be in SL without all the graphics. It's a stripped-down interface that just lets you IM and chat and see your inventory and stuff. You can run ten or fifteen of these on one computer simultaneously. I think the one most people use is SLeek, but I'm not sure if that's what the mega-campers use.

2. You can disable the logout-for-inactivity function in the Advanced menu, debug settings. I haven't been camping recently, so I'm not aware that folks have been setting out "click here to keep going" gadgets. I guess that's to cut down on the gold-diggers...the people running armies of camping bots with text based clients. :D

Why do you need Linden dollars?

I know why I need Linden dollars, I'm an avatarholic. Got so many I have to organise them by categories four levels deep. There, I said it, I'm an addict, are you happy now? Are you happy? ARE YOU?

OK, that's why I need Lindens. But why do you need Linden dollars? What's your addiction?

Nope, I'm purely a consumer. My point was value...as well as wasting time which could be better spent pursuing the SL activities you enjoy, you're probably burning more than $0.15-0.40 worth of electricity while parked on that camping chair.

Even if you use text only Second Life where you are is impacting others resources
if there is sims and neighbors near by.
I don't know I did it past but I wasn't aware of impact 20 to 30 campers have on the neighbors and often did it for upload money and little shopping because I had only so much for entertainment and land without going into the money I pay bills and food for but I haven't found any worthwhile place to camp in long time and I haven't looked.
Although from those who I know who are still are these days it's hard thing to find unless you're new there are place for newer residents though.
There is a whole of those survey places which concern me because they are harvest people's
personal information for often 3 dollars or less a day.
I get what I need from my stipend and I don't buy what I don't need.
As long I have my land and tier paid, few L for uploads for my art work I am content.
Of course I wish I could afford sim, more fancier faster computer and few more software and equipment related things for my artwork but I don't really need those things.
But I can still wish I could actually have one to keep it low lag and have big doodle garden but I can live without that and I can hope my computer holds out for another few years
while I am trying to save money for newer system.

Not to pick on you FD but only because you mentioned it, i'm going to offer "so what?" Everyone else wearing megaprim items is impacting *me*, as are the poofers, the gesturbators etc etc. Campers impact far less by comparison.

We all impact each other, that's how it is.

As for the question, what do we need L$ for?? hair, clothes, shoes ... DUH! :)

To answer Ann's question about power, I worked it out, it costs me $10 in power to earn $62. Seems reasonable to me.

Go find a store that wants models. IM me for details.

Yes we all impact each other but when you're paying for land or want to visit a friend
and you or your friends can't use it the way you wish because of all the traffic your neighbors are using then get back to me tell me you don't care when you can't
enter a sim or forced to live with under 6 fps or lower because you can't move.
Some of us don't wear mega prims or gestures. Some of us strive for low impact avatars. And we don't want to deal with busy high traffic places nor want to shop in places like that we just want place to create or hang out with friends but we can't afford owning a island either.
I understand the camping thing I use to get paid quite well for it infact I made
more money camping then I have ever made with my content.
It helped me a whole lot especially because I am living on disability so I get that but thing
is those jobs are harder to come by these days.
My utility bill was never that high when I did it either.
I personally would love to get paid for what I create and I understand why people
do it even now, it makes the store look less of ghost town and more popular looking.
Only thing I have problem with it is how it impacts others especially if you got 30
to 20 bots or campers, plus more then 20 vendor scripts running on sim and 2000 plus in prims and numerous textures it does cause impact and its draining resources from anyone near by who lives near your mainland lot.

I'm sure the real reasons are far more to do with uncertain value and ressentiment (why should I pay to have fun when others get paid FOR having fun)?

hehe funny, no Im 32 years old, disabled in a wheel chair, I live off food stamps and disability income, I pay rent and phone which includes internet with money orders since I maxed my cc's on health crap and filed bankruptcy..
if you really want to know.

so are you in your mom's basement also? or how do you do it?

I guess people get jealous of campers cause lot of us are happy with our income and this is just a game. Whereas a lot of other people think this is some way of life.

I play second life for 2 to 4 hours a week and making the amount per day from camping gives me more then enough to spend on "toys", just to hang out or listen to music. What made me download sl is couple DJ's from eve online radio also DJ over here so I downloaded it to hear them when they did sets over here.

Also I do not pay for eve online. As other mentioned how could I pay for eve online
http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=channel&channelID=544711
I buy timecodes with in game money which is allowed by CCP :)

usual average atm is 500mil for 60 day game code. Which at the high end is super easy to make.

So only thing I do pay for is my utilities which includes internet billed on my utility bill :)

so being broke camping and games that offer gtc's are the way to go for me.

Until death at least which may come soon anyhow due to some complications but I keep optimistic.

By the way the poster wanting to try Sleek the text based second life client you can download it here
http://code.google.com/p/sleek/
if the link gets removed just IM me in game when ever. It's great, uses no resources other than the bandwidth, so no worry about crowded places or lag :)
then close it and open the normal client when done.

for the casual player can make 50-100 per evening, which yea you would get more just buying the lindens, but if you cannot 700 per week or more in some situations is plenty for casual player to rent a home, buy gadgets/clothing, etc.

Cito you don't owe anyone a explaination.
For those who don't get it just because someone is disabled doesn't mean
they shouldn't have same rights to find enjoyable activities or have
a internet connection.
I got friends here with very low end graphic cards and even play SL on dial up
who are here because doing creative things helps them with their depression and gives them meaning even though they are so disabled they can barely walk, etc.
I have spent money on this game but in doing so it might I went without
things because it was my choice and it was therapy for me, it kept me
from focusing on what was going on with my health and gave me new
opportunities to learn and express myself.
I don't care what others think about it but it kept me alive that is all that
matters.
Over time I made friends who adopted me as family and helped me
with tier, so I was able to cut back my expenses.
It felt really good that someone even virtually cared that much about me
that they could do something that nice for me.
One person even gave me several older version of Photoshop one Christmas
because they were upgrading to CS2.
It definitely restored my faith in my fellow human beings too.
Not everyone here is judgmental or focused on gaining more wealth for themselves.
Some actually are here to do good things for others in their spare time.
There is more low income and disabled people here then one would think,
they have same right to enjoy Second Life in whatever way they want
as long it doesn't break any TOS or harm anyone.

I wouldn't say they're jealous but there is a definite lack of understanding of the human psyche involved. There is no such thing as a free lunch, but I can certainly understand why someone who would have their computer on anyway chooses to camp rather than buy Linden dollars.

Can someone tell me what this function is? I couldn't find anything that sounded remotely like anti-idle log out or log out for inactivity. I work from home so I am AFK for longer periods of time, and its a pain to constantly relog in after a conference call or whatever.

It's in the Character Tests menu. Look for "Allow AFK When Idle" and uncheck it.

And the Character Tests is a sub-menu under the Advanced menu (or Client if you have an older viewer version). If you do not see the Advanced menu on your top menu bar, press Ctrl-Alt-d to get it.

I'm not gonna read through all of this to see if it was mentioned, but one way to grab some $L is by hunting out some free Zyngo machines! Pay the machine $1L and it gives it back to you. Then just play until you win. Hopefully it's an instant win and not one that pays out at a certain time of the day.

In light of the current economy (see thread "Market Activity, Economic Turmoil and SL";)

I would like to change the OP question to:
"How to get Linden Dollars without buying them OR earning them".

Thank you for your help.
