Did I violate the TOS? My sharks may have attacked a Linden.

I recieved these messages in my IM to Email last night: From: someone Second Life: Your object 'Shark' has been returned to your inventory lost and found folder by Neuro Linden from parcel 'VRchitecture Model Homes ( Pre-fab House houses home store )' at Shona 41.0112, 205.179 due to parcel owner return. [9:19] Second Life: Your object 'Shark' has been returned to your inventory lost and found folder from parcel 'VRchitecture Model Homes ( Pre-fab House houses home store )' at Shona 41.0112, 205.179 due to parcel owner return. [9:19] Second Life: Your object 'Shark Egg touch to change' has been returned to your inventory lost and found folder by Neuro Linden from parcel 'VRchitecture Model Homes ( Pre-fab House houses home store )' at Shona 40.6551, 205.235 due to parcel owner return. [9:19] Second Life: Your object 'Shark' has been returned to your inventory lost and found folder by Neuro Linden from parcel 'VRchitecture Model Homes ( Pre-fab House houses home store )' at Shona 41.0112, 205.179 due to parcel owner return My land is set to auto-return in 10 minutes, but this rezzer has been setting out for a couple of weeks and set to the correct group. I have an Attack Shark product where a shark egg rezzes a shark periodically that will swim around a prescribed course and the shark will attack anyone who comes to close to it, bumping and pushing them around a little bit, chumming particle blood in the water and saying things like "Shark rips a huge chunk of flesh out of ArchTx Edo". All you have to go to get away is move more then 10 meters away from it. It does no harm unless the land is set to damage enabled, then it can kill. The sharks are temp on rezz so they delete themselves in 60 seconds or so, just in case they wander off course, which has never happened. I have around 2000 unused prims currently so the temp on rez sharks could not have bothered anyones prim allotment. This all happened up on my large work platform 300 meters above my store. I was developing a new shark rezzer that can be set to rezz one every 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds, or be turned off by touching it. I left the shark egg out but turned off. Someone had to touch it to turn it on, and could have then been attacked by a shark if they were within 10 meters of it. Sharks that rezz on the work platform just sit there on top of the egg unless someone comes within 10 meters of them. The coordinates of all of the return messages above indicate that the sharks and egg were sitting where I left the egg, 30 meters within the borders of my land, on my work platform. My store is surrounded by Linden waterways and an open water sim. There are no neighbors close by and I own most of the land in the mainland sim. So I don't see anyway the sharks could have bothered any neighbors or visitors unless they were nosing around on my work platform. So I imagine that Neuro or someone turned the shark rezzer on by touching it, then Neuro Linden came too close to a shark and got bumped a few times. I can imagine him deleting the shark out of annoyance, but why delete the shark egg? They restarted the sim yesterday so its possible Neuro Linden was working on it and I'm guessing that the temp-on-rez sharks could have attracted his attention somehow?? Odd that he deleted the shark egg and sharks but did not leave me a message of any sort. I have two more shark rezzers set up in the ocean water below and South of my work platform they run all of the time as a product demo for visitors to my store. Nothing was done with them. So I don't know what to make of this. I sent Neuro Linden an IM message asking if there was a problem but won't be surprised if I don't get a response. EDIT: P.S. When I started developing the Attack Sharks I asked for opinions here on Resident Answers if people thought this would be a TOS violation of some sort, having sharks or such critters that bump and push an avatar around slightly, this is all just to add a bit of excitement and realism to the second life environment and really does not harm anyone in anyway unless the land is damage enabled. Everyone who responded to that post seemed to think this was OK.

I can't imagine it being a TOS violation...maybe just a curious Linden having a bad day? For what it's worth, I've got two schools of piranhas in the waters on Waikiti, one school is set for no damage and they do pretty much what you've described your sharks doing -- they bump a bit and make some particle blood. (no chatting though). The other school does have damage enabled, and one or two will take 15% damage bites, but if you get right into the school so they all get in at once, they'll kill. Edited to add -- if your sharks sense avatars using the llSensors function, then they ought not to have attacked the Linden at all... all the Lindens I have ever met, have been invisible to sensors. -Atashi

Sounds like too much fun to me. The next time it happens I would love to be there to watch it. It might just have to do with the rolling restart yesterday. Sometimes that stuff causes problems in the sim and he was just cleaning it up. He might just want his leg back too that your shark had for dinner.

It looks like auto-return to me. Which is automatic. I have knifes scripted that follow and attack anyone who comes near it was harmless, no one was harmed. Unless the shark is on property that kill it won't be able too.

99% sure the temp-on-rez sharks were a region performance issue 'suspect' - regardless if they hit the region hard or not.
Too bad you don't have pics of the event though! grin

Neuro Linden is an operations guy, I'm with Desmond. I bet he was checking into a performance issue and decided to nuke the temp-rez's to see if that was it.
/me makes note to stop by ArchTx's place and check out the cute toys .

Man, if I had a nickel for every damn "My shark attacked a visiting Linden and then he killed my shark and deleted my shark egg" thread, I'd be rich by now.

I'm pleasantly surprised that I got a nice response from Neuro Linden essentially saying that there was a performance issue. The shark egg was spawning shark objects every 30 seconds so they were piling up on each other, and causing physics lag. I'm still dieing to know if he got close enough to one to get attacked though. Maybe we could set up several dozen of them at once and wait around to see if any Linden's show up to investigate the lag! @ Raymond. You are right, I should have done a search of the forums for "attacks on Lindens". @ Nika et all, Please do come by and see my pets, there are six different kinds of attack creatures set up in the demo area, including a school of piranhas . They really are a lot of fun! http://slurl.com/secondlife/Shona/32/130/13

temp on rez sharks cripple a region
8 of them is enough to make the sim lag like there are 200 campers
16 of them and all sim stats are at rock bottom, you can`t do anything (frozen in place) and even chat lags 10-20 seconds

From: Xanthia Nightfire Noob question: So what happens if somebody gets killed in SL? If you're on damage enabled land (only way to be killed), you are auto-TP'd back to where you have marked as Home on the grid. No loss...just a slight inconvenience.

I flat-out refuse to laugh at the moment, as I suspect this of being the funniest joke of all time, similar to the one spoofed on on The Monty Python Show, and the delayed reaction to come in about 25 years will most likely prove to be fatal.

Dude, if you're providing entertainment for your campers, I believe most people call that a "club". . The catch is the campers are on damage enabled land, with object creation turned off, so if they don't get the bats, spiders & rats with melee weapons, the critters will get them Point me to the spiders Xio, so far all I found are some Gorean Crocs that go everywhere else in the sim except where I want them.

16 of them and all sim stats are at rock bottom, you can`t do anything (frozen in place) and even chat lags 10-20 seconds Alicia, if you are implying it is the "temp-on-rez" aspect that would lag a region in this case I'm pretty sure you are mistaken. As an experiment I set up 16 rezzers to rez "temp-on-rez" objects and I could see no measurable decrease in the sim statistics at my mainland property. I increased it to 32 rezzers and still saw no problem. I agree that rezzing "physical" objects, especially if they are colliding with each other can have really drag a sim down, but still not nearly as much as you indicate here. I have had two shark eggs rezzing "temp-on-rez" physical sharks every minute for months at my mainland sim with no problems. The sharks use llSensorRepeat() every 2 seconds to scan for avatars. I have on occasion had 6 or so sharks running at once, but never measured the impact. Curious about your statements I decided to run some tests and see what the impact on sim performance was. I made a note of the sim preformance with 0, then 2 and 8 sharks with the following results. Time Dilation: 0.99, 0.97, 0.96 Sim FPS: 45, 44, 43-45 Physics FPS: 44.7, 44.7, 43.2-44.7 So up to 8 sharks was not really much of a hit on the sim performance. With 16 sharks the sharks piled up on top of each other as there was not enough room for that many to rez and swim the course at the same time, and the sim did bog down to practically nothing with wild fluctuations of the numbers. I think the numerous physical objects colliding was causing the problems. I will try that again with more space to see what the effect is.

i did it with the 30 seconds shark egg as sharks started to pile up, they dragged the sim to it`s knees, the problem lies with them colliding into eachother due to no room as physical using the 1 minute interval would create the same issue if they rez ontop of eachother, just with temp being 1 minute, it most likely won`t create such an havok used the 30 sec to to basicly create a barrier against idiots with sharks patrolling the area and attack anyone on sight as nub`s club defense and then stumbled into that issue, with some testing, 8 of the 30sec rezzers stacked, it takes only a couple of cycles befor the sim is renderd useless and does a better job then any so called griefer weapon i`ve seen while looking innocent dozen of then and i crippled the sim so bad i`ve never seen love the shark attack but the 30second version in the hands of a person wanting to do harm can cripple a sim and most likely it`s shared host sims aswell as the resources needed to handle them goes haywire tested it on an island and showed some friends the true defenition of a shark attack, their words "WTF?!?!?!" and they introduced me to it maybe just remove the 30 seconds version as that`s asking for problems
