Greetings!

It is my pleasure to open this discussion here on the main forums! I recently wrote a paper that was accepted for presentation at SLCC 2007 for the Business Track. The subject was on "Bringing SL Fashion to RL". During my presentation, I proposed that there be a Fashion Track at next years SLCC. I received very positive feedback from those who attended. Many expressed interest in the project.

For those of you who may not know, there are already 4 tracks; Business, Education, Machinima, and Social. If there is an interest, make it know so that we can have a Fashion Track 2008!

There is a great opportunity for many of you talented designers to take your design skills to the next level. If you create original designs and have thought about having them created in real life for others to wear, this may be the opportunity you have been waiting for to step into the RL world of fashion. SLCC is a great opportunity for you to get exposure, feedback, and learn a lot. I hope many of you will step forward and show the world how much talent is really in SL!

I have submitted a proposal as resuested to:
http://slcc2007.wordpress.com/feedback/#comment-4506

The Proposal can be viewed here:
http://www.never30.net/Docs/SLCC%20Fashion%20Track%202008%20Proposal.pdf

Please keep in mind that it is lacking various elements that will not be available until more details are available for SLCC 2008 such as sponsorship packages, location, and other information. This document was written so that the organizers of SLCC and the community as a whole could get a better understanding of what was being proposed and provide feedback and ask questions as necessary.

I know it seems a bit early to open discussion on this subject, but once you read the document you will understand why. If you have any comments, suggestion, or questions please feel free to post them here or send me a message.

Once the actual audio from the SLCC 2007 Business Track Presentation is available I will post it here as well.

Warmest regards,
Maddy

Hiya Nina!

That's great input and exactly what we are looking for. Many designs in SL are not something a lot of us would wear IRL. However, this is an opportunity for you to tell any designers that express an interest what you WOULD wear!

Personally, my avatar wears some very daring designs at times and they look great on her, but I would never step out of the house in a string bikini or a... (heh nvm). However, there are some really gorgeous evening gowns, party dresses, day dresses, cute tshirts, etc that I WOULD totally wear!

Hopefully some designers will step forward and you, I, and others can check out their designs and let them know what we WOULD put in our RL closet!

Hugz,
Maddy

well i would certainly wear my avs shoes. my favourites are my etd mary janes. not into traditional pumps or stilettos, although i do like vampy heels. im also fan of platform soles and wear them relentlessly irl. funky plats though, not slutty thighhighs and such.
maybe the deciding factor is age though. as a teen and into my 20s i was really into the goth/betty fashion, but now into my 30s i feel pressure to dress a bit more generic, although i do still incorporate some of this style into my appearance (shoes, black, piggies). actually the more i consider it the only thing i will not wear anymore are excessively short skirts, leggings, and that sort of thing. as a young one i felt original or different. older i realise it was more of a uniform of nonconformity. so the complete look is not as appealing to me nowdays anyway.
the vast majority of clothes in sl would likely only translate well into clothes for teenagers as theyre the only ones with the nerve to wear such things. maybe if they were 'toned down' a bit they would work better as rl designs.

If an SL designer could figure out away to bring Color Change Shoes to RL, they would probably wind up a beneficiary in my will....

And wind up the beneficiary of many a married man's will too, seeing their wives' shoe collection brought down to around only five pairs of shoes ;)

I'd love to see some of my gowns in RL, but for the love of all that is comfortable, not on ME.

Nah, be more than five. I would probably get down to 40 though.

We are getting good feedback on the blog. I just wanted to remind anyone who has an interest in seeing a Fashion Track in 2008 (especially you designers) to post! We need your input!

Hi!

I'd love to see some of my gowns irl too...as well as some of my casual and cocktail dresses irl. *dreams*

Not on me though...but would be awesome to see nonetheless.

Nicky Ree did an Asian Show (of which I was a humble part of) of All Asian Designers for SLCC this year. I didn't get to see the show though, sadly. Did anyone get to see it? Or get it on film/captured?

I'm kind of amazed that Fashion isn't already a part of SLCC as clothing designers make up a big percentage of the population in SL...as do accessory makers.

Have a great day y'all,
Elle

I speculated in the forum recently that there might be a market for specific RL outfits that are BRANDED with the designers logo from SL. Cult clothing. If LL had a nimble product marketeer they could offer a version of their logo for "as seen in ..." attributions. Personally, I have an adorable outfit from Bare Rose with their logo on the belt, and definitely would buy a version of that IRL (ok, make the skirt a little longer!). This idea was derided by some knowledgable people, but I still like it.

Note the thread that Chip posted earlier about HBO buying an SL machinima series for broadcast next spring. I see co-marketing potential!! Get your RL products ready NOW!

Hola Nika!

Great ideas there! I'd love to see branding as well. If any other SL designers are willing to start a line of branded clothing, I'd buy too! :D There's some awesome stuff in SL and I don't think some of these designers realize just how much potential they have!

Loving this idea!

I think this idea is wonderful. My SL "closet" is absolutely packed with designs I've longed to have in my real life closet. Everything from casual to business to eveningwear included!

I am primarily an accessory designer, however, so my biggest question is:

Will this include jewelry? Maybe even handbags, shoes, etc? If not in 2008, perhaps somewhere down the line? I must admit, the idea of being able to wear some of my designs on a nice night out sometime in the future gives me butterflies in my tummy!

Great work!

Hey Mo!

Although I personally don't plan on assisting in the making of any jewelry, I know a few people who CAN! I don't know how craft savvy you are, but all the tools you need to make jewelry are at local craft shops and such. Here, we have "Michael's" and there are at least 4 full aisles full of jewelry making parts and tools.

This is of course if you are not looking at making "real" gem jewelry. If you want to make gold and/or silver and other precious metals I would suggest using the craft store to produce a prototype first, then having the actual jewelry made by a professional.

During my time in Chicago, I had the opportunity to visit 3 jewelry/accessory shops where they handmade EVERYTHING! I spent close to $200 on a few pieces of jewelry and two handbags (and I am not an accessory shopper normally.)

So if you want to make some handmade pieces (or have them professioanlly made) and we pull this thing together...YES you can very well have the models wearing your jewelry in the Fashion Show. that's a superb idea! It would be a great opportunity for you to sell the pieces at SLCC as well!

If you decide you want to try a few things and need some help getting started or finding resources...shoot me an email and I will be happy to point you in the right direction! (maddy at never30.com)

Thumbs up and hugs,
Maddy

Wow that is a great idea! You've given me a ton to think about. Not like I need more hobbies, but jewelry making is something I've never considered trying. I'm going to do some research on this and give it some serious thought.

It'd be a miracle if I had anything made by the time SLCC 2008 rolls around, but I will be following your progress on this project closely, that's for sure!

Thank you thank you thank you! And good luck!

*big hugs*
