How about a hands-off "SL etiquette" school, with a test that people have to pass to become members of the Forum Cartel, with access to the freebies? As far as I can see, the "first hour experience" discussions focus on teaching new avatars how to *do* things, rather than how to *behave* in a civilised fashion. I wouldn't want to speak for Spike (he might want to comment on it himself) but his experience suggests that if newbies can manage to be polite and enthusiastic (even if they don't feel the need to use the caps key that often :p ) then they are going to get along with others a lot better than if they wander around aimlessly with no profile, no manners and no insight.

It wouldn't replace the official SL introduction, the NCI, nor the Oxbridge tutorials (and God forbid that it should replace Lindal's "relationships" sessions) but it might offer a source of interesting and enlightened new blood for the Cartel.

Throw in a couple of "practice rooms" (I haven't worked out the full possibilities here - maybe two seater tables with a menu of conversation topics to get potentially shy couples off to a start) and some sponsored (to offset running costs) lm/tp points to appropriate places where the skills learned could practised seriously?

Pep (I would be loathe to suggest that grammatical and spelling tests could be included  )

Ah, here it comes. I always wondered why the Forum Cartel group was so easy to join. No fee, people are friendly, actually talk with you, not 'clique-ish' (sorry Pep, for that word, such as it is) new people not fixed with icy 'Who are YOU?' stare, friendly welcomes at the hangout. But I see you are re-considering this, possibly making it a little more difficult to travel with the elite; well, guess I should just be grateful I made it in before the lock; might not qualify, or pass the test otherwise. :)

I'm definitely still monitoring this thread for ideas. A couple of questions and reactions:

A sandbox seems kind of hopeless with only 900-odd prims. Plus, it's Mainland, without whatever magic Estate-dwellers get for managing sandboxes. Yeah, I know it's possible to do it on the Mainland, but it's either manual or a really long auto-return time, AFAIK. But the prim limit is really the killer there.

The sorted freebie collection thing... I guess I'm unclear why it would be helpful to have another location for this, unless there's some niche not filled by the GNUbie Store and Sarah Nerd's Freebie Paradise and NCI's freebie collection and probably others I don't know about. So, if I'm not understanding, I'd welcome clarification on this.

A fishing hole? Well, I have a question in to the support person at 7Seas (no response yet), but my general take on this is that, given there's a complete water sim (Corra) diagonally off the sim corner, and the Hangout dock just down the slope, a "man made" pond seems kinda redundant. So I'm thinking maybe the Hangout itself should get some fishing gear, with proceeds donated to whatever Cartel projects are underway. So once I understand how 7Seas works, I'll talk to the Cartel officers about that. But just to be sure: are we talking about 7Seas, or is there some other fishing system that people have in mind?

I'm feeling pretty favorable toward some kind of tutorial or information clearinghouse, and still wide-open about topics. (For a while, I thought about a "Quaternions Dungeon" similar to the Particle Lab or the Ivory Tower, only more sadistic... but the thought of explaining SVC-93 squicks even my kinky scripting sensibilities.)

Again, thanks for the input, and eager for more! :)

How about a beauty salon/barber shop, with thoroughly fifties seats with those enormous hoods and rusty scissors and the like... and makeover instructions from the people who created Spike...

Yes 7 seas. I even have a system and gear I could rezz already.(Copy). Though you are probably right, there is already plenty of water around there. I was just being silly.:o The cool thing about 7 seas now is people can add their own custom things to it. So that would be cool for new creators who wanted to make freebies and other items for people to "fish" up. Though, like you said there is plenty of water around there for that.:)

What do you need to know about 7Seas? I don't know a heck of a lot, other than one only needs to be within llShout distance from a 7Seas server...

Okay, there's this copy-perm "Deluxe Motorboat" vehicle with mobile fishing server that I was thinking would be fun to rez next to the Hangout dock for folks to go out to the water sims and fish and goof off. But many vehicles require that the driver be the owner, so if these boats have that restriction, nobody but the owner could take one for a spin, and I couldn't just script something that rezzes a fresh boat whenever someone takes one off the parcel. So I asked if they had that restriction.

(Granted, I'm just being cheap: for L$300 I could test and know the answer to that question for myself. But if the answer is that the boats aren't restricted, then I want to create an accounting alt to own it and all the other fishing contraptions, so the alt's entire L$ balance would be for the Cartel. If on the other hand the boats *are* restricted, then they aren't very interesting for this application, except as yet another gizmo for people to buy.)

I've got a modded version of the old Linden clinker-built sailboat that I fixed the original textures on and scripted it so it returns to the dock after you quit using it. For you, free.

That's a really cool idea!

If it turns out that these boats are restricted, then I'm pretty sure it would not be difficult to embed a standard fishing server (or just its scripts and objects) into any ordinary boat you can modify, such as Argent's sailboat...

Now that is creative. The times I've had in cornfields, both RL and SL ...

Let me guess - you were a little too tall, could've used a few pounds?

Wheat is waist deep, isn't it? But I didn't mean to suggest I was "waist deep in corn", only that ...

The freebie store idea was intended to be more of a specialised collection of only top quality free items, I am not sure how Sarah Nerds Freebie Paradise or the GNUbie Store look now.

I remember Sarah Nerds as being a huge industrial type building with floors full of items around the sides, the items at the time were offered individually with photo and a description for each item but the choice was immense, actually a little overwelming.
I remember struggling with lag while trying to look for something of use, and picking up loads of items which later had to be sorted through for useability.

Sarah Nerds was one of the best freebie stores I visited though and provided me with a great start in SL.
Some other freebie places i visited just had non descript boxes full of freebies to search through.

All of these places have their use and the suggestion was more for something a little different.

An easy to navigate freebie store that didn't look like a freebie store at all.

My imagination at the time of suggestion was a small sparsly filled very well built building, holding only a few of the very best free items of a specific type say clothing, with details of each items creator and maybe links to other things they went on and created.

Sort of a show case building or store of design in SL, allowing new users to see what is possible:)

I can see how that could be a valuable contribution, and it has some "situational synergy" with the Hangout. And I think I could build a space that might appeal to the discriminating freebie shopper, but there's a big problem: I completely suck at marketing. I *so* suck at it that I could never bestir myself to bring any but a few of my "creations" to market, and then only persist at even half-hearted marketing for perhaps a week at a time before I lost interest.

Plus, my off-beat tastes would probably not result in a very marketable selection of freebies. I just have no retail DNA at all. :o

That's kind of why I thought of piggybacking on (somebody else's?) show-and-tell to choose items, and just run them in rotation. That's presuming that a week of show-and-tell items would fit in the space and prims of 4ksq.m, which might be wishful thinking. (The Lummerland show, for example, has a high proportion of prim-heavy attachments and too-primmy-for-physical vehicles, etc. They could be photo-vended, I suppose.)

+++

On the fishing front: I heard back from 7Seas, and their motorboat won't work. The owner doesn't have to drive, but it's scripted to self-destruct when the owner is too distant from the boat for too long--which means that some script in there is running a sensor ( :( ), and that the script won't work in any other boat we might devise for this purpose either. However, I may just try embedding the regular 7Seas server script, as suggested, to make sure it isn't fussy about being llOverMyLand() or anything similarly silly. If it works on my plywood box boat, I'll hit-up Argent for his generous offer.

That's what I liked about GNUbie.

Unfortunately, I tried visiting recently and GNUbie seems to have completely vanished. My noob-era landmark took me to a vacant parcel.

It's moved, I forget the name of the sim but it's south of Pockwock. I'm sure it shows up on Search.

Hmm, the freebie talk reminds me that the orientation islands have a vendor with a bunch of resident created freebies now. I'm not certain whether this vendor of freebies is available once off the island, but of not, acquiring one of those (and keeping it updated) would be of great benefit.

Couldn't you put up 900 boxes with Survey answers, so at each survey post we can guide the poster towards the parcel and have them click 900 boxes?

Much nicer than the old location.
