The first of Philip Linden's monthly blog posts: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/11/21/long-road-behind-long-road-ahead/An inspirational little ditty containing a new, more concise mission statement. Also, he has this to say about the short-term plans: "...have a solid plan and work underway for substantially reducing both client and server crashing in Q4 and Q1. It may sometimes seem like we are not listening, but I can tell you that we are. ...Stability is what we’ve got to be all about in the first half of 2008, at the cost of other work. Beyond stability, there is one new platform feature that still seems really important to deploy given the rising use of SL for education and collaboration, and that is being able to browse the web easily from in-world. So we have a small team of people working hard on that right now. " Reactions? Not only to what I've quoted, but to his whole posting?

I thought it well written and forward thinking.
I remember the days when the world wide web was sort of new. It didn't always work, but look what it turned into! Who could have imagined a useful storehouse of knowledge like Wikepedia being generally available to anyone on the planet with electricity and a computer, a knowledge base that is reviseable by consensus of its users?
Now with Second Life, the web itself seems outdated. Second Life is to the coming virtual worlds what the old dial up GE bulletin boards I used to browse were to the current WWW.

I didn't really feel that it said anything, and I think the timing was horrible.

I missed it! I was writing this, but it closed : From: me Thanks for the thoughtful post. I appreciate the fact that you owned up to the hamfisted implementation of VAT.
Your mission statement is lofty, and lofty missions come with lofty responsibilities implied with them. SL is a wonderfully addictive place, and I understand wanting to spread it far and wide. But do not underestimate human nature here - for the experience to be rich and robust, it needs constraining in certain places so that it is fun and safe for all. You cannot speak of a safe SL from one side of your mouth and then ignore the rampant fraud in the other. How can SL fully improve the human condition when certain frauds in game are permitted to exist? I speak mainly of the financial crises that have taken down several of the large financial institutions, leaving thousands of residents without hundreds of thousands of real dollars.
No one wants a nanny state, and I understand the libertarian principles behind LL's stance about free market economies, but you cannot allow fraud like that to go on with tacit approval. If you are serious about protecting people from certain dangers to the point that you are implementing IDV, you need to make sure that the illegal banking activities in this game are banned because it's not really play money being lost here.
Additionally, you need to do something about the bots, land bots and camping bots especially. I don't believe they should be banned, but there needs to be some control over them. Malbots are ruining the SL experience by lagging us down, swooping opportunities and mistakes, invading privacy, and cluttering up the relevance of the search tools under development by gaming the search system. It's out of control. I do believe that bots in general have some very useful applications, but the destructive tendencies are far more prevalent and LL needs to do something to rein in these tendencies, if not the bots themselves. If you want to improve the human condition in SL, you need to make sure that humans are making conscious choices in the game.
Thanks for listening.

Wonderfully said Crystalle!
I liked Phil's comment a great deal. I am really happy that the focus has now shifted to stability. I feel more secure in my long term commitment to SL now.
I never expected SL to stay the same because I realized it wasn't finished. I guess I alway thought it was early days and to roll with the changes.
I wonder if that means no more new continents for awhile?

We have been asking for the focus to be on stability forever. Now that you have your roadmap, put your damn foot down on the gas pedal.

I found it fairly inspirational as well..especially after an especially crappy week in SL.
I just noticed that there is a new WindLight release...makes me wonder if they finally traced this week's problems to WindLight, it does seem that things got really bad shortly after it was released...

lol, no, after they fixed whatever the current major problem is and the Residents were feeling a bit more receptive to idealistic flights of fancy. I also think they should have waited on the bubbly Windlight release blog. I know different Lindens work on different areas, but it came across sounding like they prioritized the release over getting the shut out Residents back in.

You know, nobody has time to write a thoughtful post. If they would leave blog comments open to 500 as they used to, people would get a chance to think about things and post thoughtful answers. (Mine was just pretty much the first thing off the top of my head.) As it is, it's almost a race to comment.
Not only that, Philip might actually LIKE reading the responses.
Maybe he doesn't think it is better just to NOT HEAR from people who would like to have posted (and might make better and more thoughtful posts than mine and most of the rest).
Instead, we just get the first people who happen along

From: Dnali Anabuki I wonder if that means no more new continents for awhile? Hopefully it doesn't mean that. Like currency, land supply should be managed with an eye to keeping its value relatively stable. Of course, if the grid keeps collapsing I'm guessing new land is not on the top of their list.

Land supply is easily managed these days: Don't bring any new sims to auction because prices are not moving up.

It would seem half of the comments are people saying "I can't get in". Unfortunately if their avatar is not old enough, it's not going to let them. The timing of the Philip & Windlight posts was indeed terrible. These comments are somewhat wasted as LL is aware of the problem, but they are not going to fully fix it until sometime late tomorrow because of the holidays. I wish more comments were allowed to be made also; 500 was good. People can vent and give more thought out suggestions that way. I started posting on the blog more lately and happened to be lucky enough to post when it was relatively fresh.

I never really bought quasi political "all is well" feel good speeches. But give me a hit off of whatever he is smokin. From: King Philip Our mission is: “To connect everyone to an online world that improves the human condition.”

By the way...the new mission statement is creepy. It is better than the old one in that it is concise and shorter. When I hear mission statement, I automatically think of some kind of church mission statement; I don't know why. Linden Lab's sounds so cult-like.

As for the comments after all Linden blogs, too depressing. Whining gets me down.

Sounded to me he was just telling us what he thinks we want to hear. Heard it all before and here we are today with an even more messed up SL.
The question is if they are going to follow through this time.

The question is if they are going to follow through this time. Our Experts have already solved all the bugs in Second Life ... We are winning the war on Lag... Our Windlight will bring the future. .. The Millions and Millions of the Phil's fans will have no issues playing Second Life... Pay no attention to the Linden behind the curtain ...

Well if it's for REAL (i.e. "we PROMISE to work on stability and not all that new fangled stuff" then I say aye for one and one for all. At this point in time, it's awfully hard to believe anything we hear... All that aside, I still tear up with joy and wonder every time I see "Starry Night" because I'm so happy that SL actually exists.
