This age verification malarky has been bandied around for over 6 months now .. I've seen nothing new here.

She's got a point though... everyone in here bitches about everything, and predict's the imenant doom of SL daily. You said in your quote that people are seeing SL tank... What evidence do you have to support this? Before the gambling ban, concurency was running about 45k at the top end. I'm seeing it hit 42k but a month later. That's down just 7 percent. So, apparently, there's more to do in SL than gamble, and gambling was one of if not the biggest thing in SL. This forum is chock full of whiners who get on and bash LL daily, yet, you all continue to log on.. why? If LL can retain people who seem to hate it with a passion, then I tend to think they're in pretty decent shape. And honestly, some of the complaints are really reaching... "did ya see how fast they buried the age verification blog post"... c'mon. So they release a few blog posts in a row, and all of a sudden it's the evil LL purposely burying a post that well be available for reading forever? Right. I didn't miss the blog post.. why? because I read it. The vast majority of users never do, so what point would there be in burying it?

i dont have the links handy, but i do recall somebody posting urls that detailed shady behaviour by aristotle/integrity. these included selling data to political campaign outfits and so on. i dont recall the details, but tristen is not just pulling this out of her ass.

I try and stay away from posts that start 'OMG... , You GOT to see this, WHY WHY..., Did You Know'.. etc etc.. its similar to those spam emails you get that try and entice you to open them and be drawn in....

Can't understand why I get spam mail that are addressed to Dear Sir, and then try and ply me to enroll into some 'breast enlargement programme' . My wife gets Dear WebGodess, and then about viagra... perhaps they think we as men, would dare to suggest to the wife that she gets breast enlargements.... LOL.. that would result in a healthy arguement terminating in the suggestion of the purchase for copulous amounts of viagra... then the marriage concelling spam mail will probably start..

I don't mean all the problems with age-verification; those may be serious, but for the nonce I'm suspending disbelief and pretending that will all go flawlessly and there's no compromise of confidential identity information. (There are lots of threads about that already.)

Rather, what if the land-based content restriction just isn't good enough? Isn't there a journalist somewhere in Germany with nothing better to do than sit on a non-restricted portion of an estate and cam into the Adult area and make a machinima of nakkie AVs doin' the nasty, to plunk down in front of Robin and YouTube? Inasmuch as they're gonna do it eventually anyway, wouldn't it be better if they did it *during* the beta?

Is there any chance LL would then see the folly of the land-based restrictions, and forestall implementation till actual *content*-based restrictions can be implemented?

I opened a hotmail account just for my SL account. Nothing else is connected to that email, but everyday my email is filled with spam. OVERFLOWING with spam. Where is all the spam coming from? Where did these companies get my email address?

I have to add though, other than this email spam problem, I've never run into any problems with SL/LL, even when it comes to their CSR's.

And I don't understand why some people are bothered by the age verification. If you're the proper age to be on the SL grid, then you have nothing to worry about.

More on the matter, there is a lot to complain around Second Life and the company behind it. And if even you have to complain a lot, that doesn't have to mean you don't like SL anymore.

Oddly enough, I'm with Michael on this one, but I also agree with Lindal when she points out that people are incredibly passionate about SL and they are rightfully upset by the fact that the Lindens seem to be fucking it up. It is in fact the most passionate 'owners' of SL that are the most vociferous complainers. They care.

And half the moaning and groaning on here would disappear if the Lindens would only get their communications right. Let us know what you're doing and why. Preferably before you do it.

how ironic. you realise probably the biggest argument against verification is in regards to data privacy. its interesting that youre complaining about spam.
the company that ll have hired to do the verification is a sleazeball dataminig outfit that is on record as one that sells that data to marketing outfits. its not about a 'secret life' on the grid or being underage. its about my vital info being sold on to commercial and political interests.
this is the same logic employed by secret police all over the world. comforting hey.

I think you might find this stems from Hotmail rather than LL. I had the impression Hotmail was notorious for spammers.
I did not start a separate email for SL and these days you don't even require a separate one per alt.

Agree. My SL email is a seperate account with my Cable/ISP. I've never received anything non SL related.At least the last time I checked, it's been awhile.

...but back to the verification...if this is something LL needs to do in order to keep SL up and running, sure its a privacy issue, but imo, I think Linden is just trying to keep itself legally safe. There are alot of countries where the underage thing is a huge issue and LL is protecting itself. How much bitching would there be if LL suddenly had to close up shop because of legal issues stemming from underage players on the grid? I'm sure the forums would be flooded with "why didn't they just verify age?"

I'm not saying I like it, it burns my cookies that yet another company is having access to my personal info, but which is worse? Having your age verified or finding out that LL had to be shut down for legal reasons? Imo, they're just trying to cover their ass to keep SL running...and legal
