there is a website somewhere that explains (step by step) how to set up your website html so it automatically adjusts to the moniter size for the reader. i really wish i still had that bookmarked. but i'm sure you can find such a place on the web if you're willing to put in the time and effort researching it. (try wikipedia for links at the bottom of html tutorials too)

I'd say an average to go for is 1024 x 768.
That should fit on most monitors- both CRT and LCD.
Making a webpage too big would cause people with small monitors to scroll around alot.... which is a good way to make them leave sooner.

From: Imnotgoing Sideways 1600x1200 20" and I used the 50" for new years at 1920x1080. Windlight Ultra all the way. \(^_^)/ I'm so tempted to hook up to the new 46" screen, but I'd have to drag the computer to the other side of the house, or get some REALLy long cables.

[-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------] Thanks Colette. That fits my screen exactly. If you make you website too wide some people will have to scroll horizontally. I hate that. But you will want to it to look nice on on of those really wide screens too. Welcome to web design.

how far do you sit from the computer? Japan? I use an 100 inch screen. It's a projector. When I'm in Second Life I really am *IN* Second Life. I can't really recommend it though. A bulb can cost as much as $500 and they only last 3-4 months. So it's the equivalent of buying a new monitor every few months. The best thing thing about projectors are that you can sneeze and you don't get snot all over your screen. Well not unless you sneeze really hard.

how far do you sit from the computer? Japan? umm maybe 3 1/2 feet. I had used a couple of 17" monitors for a long time and then one day the HDTV arrived. I of course plugged my comp into it right after the cable, and I have not touched my old monitors since. It's a nice big crisp picture but sometimes it does cause my eyes to feel strain. Sometimes I miss sitting with my face hovering a few inches from the monitor.

Well not unless you sneeze really hard. I have considered this for some media projects. The expense of those bulbs every few months is a big turnoff though. Tell me, when you travel through a build or are standing among a group of toons does it feel like a more immersive experience?

Tell me, when you travel through a build or are standing among a group of toons does it feel like a more immersive experience? At first it was amazing. But as I'm sure you've noticed with your TV, you do get used to it and start to take it for granted. One day I tried going back to my 24" Dell monitor and couldn't believe that something I once thought of as huge was suddenly incredibly tiny. I immediately sold it on ebay. So the projector probably is more immersive. But I think I take that immersion for granted. It's like anything, we get used to it. We're never satisfied... I'm going to hire a movie theatre next.

From: Brenda Connolly Ouch! I have a 19" at least Oh I don't mind...but you should use a better resolution with yours I guess-it should go higher than that! Desk hasn't got ROOM for anything larger anyway...

From: Hugsy Penguin Two things I hate about web sites: 1 - It's designed for a certain screen resolution so I have run my browser maximized. Not everybody has a high resolution monitor. Not everybody who has a high resolution monitor wants to run their browser "big". Design your web site to look good at various sizes. 2 - Micro-font, especially when the designer purposefully makes it impossible to use Ctrl-Plus to enlarge the font. It's as if they're purposefully trying to piss people off. --Hugsy Ditto. I surf at 3 or 4 different screen-sizes depending on my location/device at the time For instance: At work, I use both 1024 and 800 pixel-wide displays. At home, I run my SL computer at 1280x720 widescreen. I have another computer for Photoshop that runs I think 1280x960... and finally, I have an iPod Touch that runs in wide or tall aspect with whatever pixel-count it uses. I read these SL forums on all of those different computers, whenever I'm bored. So they're all regular surf-screens.

From: Brenda Connolly It can, but I don't like it. I tried 1152. Too small for me. That would be a problem for me as well- I'm extremely short-sighted, which means my glasses make me see everything smaller (comes with the strength of those lenses)-it would be rather hard for me to work with tiny fonts.....they might look perfectly crisp and clear, but they're too small.

Computer Screen
03-28-2008 17:00
Hey everyone! I use a Dell Computer which is a model 410, with a 1280X 1024 pixel monitor. I thought this was fantastic at first but I am already wanting a bigger screen! Just had it since October! But the one I have is very good and it even let me run both of my avatars at once on SL so that means to me that it is very capable of lasting me for a while, at least I hope it does.

1680x1050. About average, I guess. Sometimes, I switch from the 22" widescreen to the 40" HDTV.

My monitors can display a higher resolution but I see no value in it, since the fonts get smaller, unless you compensate, and if you compensate, what's the point?
So I stick with what I consider to be "the old standard" and what I suspect is the most common res: 1024x768.
