So, I'm in a lingerie store yesterday. Ruth walks in, wearing a halter top, and well - nothing else. How she got there, is a mystery as this was one of the upscale stores, not a lot of traffic for newbies.

She sees me, asks "where can I make some money?"

I look at her, thinking to myself, should I give her the time of day? I mean, usually I would, because I've been a Ruth of course. I'm always very helpful. But, I'm pressed for time at the moment - trying to just make a quick purchase and log off.

So, my reply?

"Well hon, first you need to put some pants on, and then go to Hippie Pay"

Truthfully, I wanted to tell her to keep her pants off, and stand on a street corner in the Amsterdam sim perhaps. But she was such a new-born babe, I couldn't do that to her!

You could try hooking her up with your alt.

Why would I want to do that?

Oh, your bored today. I usually take them to good freebie stores, get them a good skin, nice prim hair, some nice clothes, have a laugh when they end up wearing a pose stand on their head, give them L$100 and finally give up after they don't understand how to drag a object from their inventory to the floor

You should tell her that buying a few lindens with a credit card or paypal is probably the easiest way to make money. Tell her that buying just 10 dollars can make her look like a million dollars in SL. From there she can work as a dancer or escort.

Bree, that is usually exactly what I do Unfortunately this time, I didn't have the time to tell her this. I just don't know why anyone bothers to try and waste any time doing the Hippie dance when in an instant they can have all the money they need via Paypal or a credit card. Makes no sense - which I learned very fast.

Oh I love Ruth. I were in a shop the other day looking for some nice lamps and turntables, when suddenly Ruth came towards and IM'ed (!) me, asking "Hi, What are you doing here?" And ofcourse she were completely naked too.

It depends how they approach me if it is give me some money then they get told off. If they ask how to make money i tell them all the different ways. As far as that hippy thing i would not bother unless they are in the US. I looked at one and it wanted me to sign up to some site and to do that i would have to give my CC not for 350l noway

The nudity might not be her fault. I've been seeing a lot of this lately...avatars appearing in the same state they do when first arriving by tp...brown skin, female shape, short brown hair, blank white eyes. Normally, this goes away within a few seconds of arrival, as the server gets all the avatar data...but sometimes, the avatar gets stuck like this.

Several people have proposed solutions, but the quickest one I've found is to force a Ruth...Client/Character/Character Tests/Test Female (or Test Male). From there, the avatar can put on an outfit from her inventory.

Or maybe, from our pie menu we can have a "charity" option? One which can automatically apply a generic outfit to any Ruth?

I was in the clubhouse the other night, just sitting, minding my own business when my clothes all disappeared. I wasn't Ruthe'ed , but I was naked for a minute. Luckily only a couple of people were there, unfortunately, Chris was one of them.

But Brenda, even if Ruthed, surely you must still be stunning! That must have been quite the peep show!

Actually, if I have time, I usually talk them through putting on some clothes, give them the newbie resource guide and a little advice on how SL works. Some people were really nice to me when I started and I'm just trying to pay it back a little. A lot of people don't remember what being a new resident is like. It's awful. You look like ass, you're broke. You don't know how to get money and camping is frustratingly slow, but you don't know how to build, script, texture, design or anything else and even if you did, you have no hope of setting anything for sale. You can't work the camera to even see what you look like. There's all sorts of weird sexual stuff going on. You walk like an idiot, but everyone else seems to walk normally. Then you hear "AO" and it means nothing to you. Once you get one, you can't make it work. Your hair is awful compared to everyone else's. Eventually, you get caged, orbitted, set on fire, and hit in the face with a supersonic watermelon.

SL is a bitch to newbs. I vote for being extra nice to them. They usually need a hug.

I think it's like childhood. We have to forget the bad parts, or they'd traumatize us for the rest of our lives.

Seriously though, you're right. You can barely move, you don't know what half the stuff in those menus is for, you don't know anyone, and worst of all, you have no idea where you are, or where anything else is.

When I first arrived, I TP'd to a PG area. I can't remember now why I picked this spot, it might've been just a random pick from Popular Places in Search.

I was so fortunate that somebody found me, talked to me, and took me to the Free Dove to get me started.

Pardon my ignorance (being a newbie), but what is a Ruth?

It's SLang (and that right there is a new one I just made up. Alyx, are you reading this? New Word Alert!)

SLang (slang) n. Any word made up to describe a facet of the popular game/virtual world, Second Life.

Anyway, "Ruth" is the default SL avatar. She's even got her own folder in your Library under Clothing/Other Outfits, I think. Whenever SL can't find your actual appearance, it assigns Ruth to you. The outcome is referred to as "Ruthing", or "Being Ruthed".

I've seen Ruthing of several varieties. The most common is the redhaired newbie girl with the purple sweater.. the classic Ruth. I've also seen "partial" Ruths, where a guy will have breasts, but also a beard and mustache. Lately, what I've been seeing is "AnonymRuth" (Another new one, Alyx!) This one is the appearance you often get just after you teleport somewhere...female shape, brown skin, short brown hair, blank white eyes)...but the Av who is AnonymRuthed can't put on a different shape or clothes.

"Forced Ruthing" fixes this. CTRL+ALT+D to activate the Client menu. Then Client/Character/Character Tests/Test Female (or Test Male), to give you the default avatar.

Cheers Lindal, appreciate your reply and thank you for the welcome and I'll take you up on your invite. I'll be the one looking like a noob . I think I look fairly okay, new hair, diff skin but maybe I will still stand out as being new. But as in RL, you live and learn.

Appreciating all the tips, and even the bitchin' (not particularly in this thread, but in general).

I met one of my very best SL friends doing something alot like this.
The girl IMed me from my store though while I was not there. I thought about being a bigggg bitch (oh fun, right), but for some reason, I played my nice card instead.
Months and Months later, I wouldn't trade this girl for anything...she's a very good friend...who because of my help that day got to skip that awkward step of looking like a newb, and also was able to make friends with tons of older residents because she was so well put together.

Be nice to the newbs. You really have no reason to be mean to someone just for being ruthed anyway.
