I am ready to start really looking into making my own sculpties....when I did along tome ago I tried that Daz but had issues getting the SL mesh in the program. So I was thinking doing it in world as I have seen some available may be an easier way to go?

If you are going to make sculpties in-world, then your best choice is Sculpt Studio, by far.

https://xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=278458

It has an active developer who holds regular office hours, at least 2 people who teach beginners classes, and a group of dedicated users (Sweet Sculpties) who are happy to answer both beginning and advanced questions.

Great news. I look forward to seeing you in the group.

If you are in a hurry to get started, try this tutorial:

http://www.sculpties.info/?p=922

Also, the wiki contains a huge amount of information:

http://www.sculpties.info/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page

and I think Eleanora Newell holds a beginners' class on Tuesdays. Ask her about her schedule. She is a great teacher.

Good luck

If you have any doubts about Sculpt Studio's ability to create great sculpties, look at the Sweet Sculpties Flickr page:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/sweet_sculpties/

Of course, like everything, your results depend on your skill level. The more you use it, the better you get.

Cheree, I kind of expected it might be, but it just looks too good to resist. I'm trying to concentrate on rl design work here atm, but am getting inspired already for some sl design....

Well no one could have done without this fantastic piece of information.
Though it would have been of more value if you could tell us which tool IS the best tool, according to you

For the record, I am very pleased with Sculpt Studio, and would recommend it to anyone. Which tool do you recommend?

So what in your opinion is the best in-world tool? I am always willing to try new ones, but I can't do that if you don't tell us.

Well that was a vague and uninformative response.

*shrugs* I guessed he's waiting for us to all beg him.

I bought sculpt studio last night, and am liking it, but obviously have a way to go learning it after a few short tries. Am extremely impressed with the Flickr, inworld group, online tutorials, and inworld classes. That is really excellent support, and a good community for learning seems to be built around this tool.

A friend who makes sculpts commercially showed me a demo a while back, and I just *knew* I'd be using it in my work after seeing what is possible.

(running over to the content creation thread to see what wisdom is to be gleaned)

OMG!! Someone made one-prim Legos!!!!

/me fades away into a reverie about childhood . . .

Soooo . . . is it better to use an in-world tool for this, or to use an external tool like Blender, and then import into SL?

Thanks for this - I was thinking about buying Sculpt Studio for a long time. Someone said I could use theirs any time to see if I liked using it, before I bought. After some months I IMed them that I'd like to try it and got an angry snippety reply back - so much for that. Lol (He probably forgot the invitation)

I'm not usually one to spend $5000L without trying a product but all the positive ratings here make me feel more assured. The classes are a big bonus, too. I hate foundering in the dark.

I think that is purely personal, and depends how you like to work. I really like being in sl and building with company, even if it's just occasional IMs with friends. So despite knowing that Blender is good, and despite having dled it ages ago, I found it really hard to pull myself away and start it up.

And woooo..Lego...put enough of those lil bricks together, and you could build a whole *house*...just imagine :)

I like blender myself..i've tried all the in world ones and once i found my way around blender it was night and day..it took a little bit to figure out what i didn't need to use for sculpts in blender but once that was sorted it was real easy..and now with the free temp uploads it's even better cause we can test and just make the adjustment and overwrite the file and send it on again :D

Hey Ceka.....does that mean that emerald temp textures work with sculptie maps too? (I so hope they do.)

Sure do, Tiffy.

My property is littered with temp sculpties which have reverted to unsculpted spheres 'cos I've forgottent to do a permanent upload!
It's a great feature of Emerald and I couldn't do without it now.

My only question is if the upload is temp and in my cache, what do other ppl see - either for the sculptie shape or a temp texure I've tested on a regular prim?

Great news Carbon!....about your balls...I tried to do a test last night to see if a friend would lose vision of a temp texture uploaded by me on a prim as I quit sl.....we sat there on my roof and watched, but sadly she died first. We will try again. I've never ahd a temp. texture be there after relogging.

Love temp textures, btw.
