Hello everyone!
If you had the opportunity to meet players from your favorite NFL teams in SecondLife, would you be excited? Would you pay for this opportunity?
I'm conducting research for my undergraduate degree, as well as hoping to possibly make this happen, and appreciate your responses!
Thanks!

How could one know that it was really an NFL player (or any other "celebrity" for that matter) controlling the avatar?

No. I would not pay anything to see a cartoon representation of any celebrity, even if I was positive they were driving the avatar. I live minutes away from their practice facility, I can see them pretty much anytime, either there or in public appearances.

Hi, Lexie, welcome to the forums!
No, I'd rather meet hosts from NPR, or Neil Gaiman, or Quentin Tarantino, all of whom I'm sure have spent a little time in SL.
BUT, I have always thought there was great potential for Fantasy Football in SL. There is money in that idea somewhere. .

I couldn't care less about meeting a professional athlete in avatar form, or in real life, and wouldn't pay a linden to do so.
If there was a good game to go along with it that might be fun, but SL isn't really capable of making a very good sports game, so far as I am aware.

I don't even believe that 90% of the athletes that allegedly write books have even read them. Good luck getting people to believe that the celebrity's avatar was really controlled by the celebrity.

How is the athlete going to autograph a picture or football or jersey through Second Life?

From: Lexie Deezul I'm conducting research for my undergraduate degree, as well as hoping to possibly make this happen, and appreciate your responses! This might be of interest to you... "Similarly, some of the first educators and researchers in SL were a bit clumsy in their approach. There were early incidents in which Residents felt—rightly—that they were being spied upon or treated like guinea pigs rather than human beings. Imagine how you would feel if an entire class of students set up right next to your vacation hideaway, left trash lying around, logged your conversations, and posted them on the Internet with criticism and mean-spirited comments. This is exactly what happened to some early Residents. Things have improved greatly in the years since then, but sometimes SL Residents are still subject to that kind of inconsiderate behavior. For example, a constant stream of researchers (often students) posts on the Second Life official forums requesting that Residents please take their surveys. Most of these surveys include the same questions that have been asked over and over. Often they aren't spell-checked, or refer to SL as a game—a sure way to irritate a substantial number of Residents. Some Residents make a hobby of critiquing these surveys, pointing out how the questions and their wording make it clear that the researcher isn't familiar with Second Life. Some post outright that they are sick of badly planned surveys and suggest that the researchers log in and do their own research." no, thanks. can't think of any professional athelete that I would like to meet in sl, especially not a football player. I certainly wouldn't pay for the 'opportunity.' how would you prove it was actually them?

From: Lexie Deezul Hello everyone!! Hi Lexie. I'd say 'welcome to SL,' but so far there's no indication you've had or plan to have anything to do with SL other than plant questions in the forum, so welcome to the SL forums. For as long as they're here, anyway. From: Lexie Deezul If you had the opportunity to meet players from your favorite NFL teams in SecondLife, would you be excited? Favorite NFL Team I understand all of the words you are using, but together they aren't making any sense... From: Lexie Deezul Would you pay for this opportunity? I would not take advantage of this 'opportunity' if it were free. In fact, I'd consider that I was doing them a favor if I did attend their event.

I suspect the SL population isn't swarming with hardcore NFL fans, even among the Americans. Professional athletes are of course as welcome as anyone to stop by my sim, but I can't imagine going out of my way for one.
Except Rosey Grier, is he available? I'd go see Rosey Grier, that guy's just [expletive] COOL.

Nope. A. I'm not a big football fan....well...aside from the Patriots cause I'm a new England girl.....but......in SL there's absolutely no way to be sure a person is who they say they are. Even with voice....sure, you can tell male from female (um, sometimes lol) but beyond that......who's to say it's really one of the players. Payin for something like that is just not worth it (in my book) Maybe die-hard fans would get caught up in the hype of it.....but, anyone who has spent time in SL knows how easily people can be decieved......an avatar is rarely a true depiction of the person behind it.....in fact, in SL, many people join because they WANT to be someone or something else. You might be able to swing it IF you did some kind of televised thing after the fact......showing the player interacting with people in SL......showing the avatar....so that viewers at home actually saw that it was authentic. If you did it that way.....and included the fact that it would be televised later, in your pitch.....then people might be more excited about it because they'd have proof......and they themselves (er, their avatar) get a shot at being on TV or a News clip or whatever. There's your hook. check can be sent to....... hehehheehehe

I occasionally pay to see someone perform the skills at which they excel -- whether it be athletes, musicians, actors, etc. I can think of no one of those people who I would pay to have a conversation with regardless of whether it is in real life or Second Life.
In fact, I am racking my brain trying to think of any living person who I would think worthy of that, and no one comes to mind.

Thanks! My only interest level would be seeing how close a person could make an avatar match the actual athlete ... perhaps even to the point where the moment you see the avatar, you know who it is supposed to be. That said, there are probably four NFL players I would even recognize, given that they wear helmets: T.O., Payton Manning, Tom Brady and Michael Vick.

Don't most athletes have their names on the back of their shirts? I'm thinking it'd be pretty simple.

hmm.. I'm a no for this too.. not because they are NFL'ers... they could be NHL'ers and I'd still say no. I'd get more out of watching them being interviewed or playing in RL than I would a cartoon version of them. Now let's say you brought someone like Steven Hawking - now that WOULD be something! I'd definitely be up for this..and I imagine, if I told ppl he was going to appear in SL, I'd have a crowd around my PC screen.

I might possibly pay to be able to meet my favorite artists, authors, technical experts, or professional colleagues in SL. Actors, athletes, or other conventional celebrities? Can I pay to avoid them?

I don't like football. Many people in RL around me like the Detroit Lions (I live in Michigan). They really suck apparently, like REALLY, like losing every game their entire season suck. If there was a Detroit Lions player in SL, I might go visit to laugh at them. *yawn* Or I might go do something more interesting.
As others have said, I might be interested in meeting artists, authors, or musicians that I enjoy.
