My ava versus alternative ava

Ok, here we go. I have been just me for a long time, but recently I created another account with another ava...and now I feel so scitsofrenic!

My question is about morals, do I tell my new good friend I met as second me (posing as a newbie) about old me and start seeing him as old me, or should I just keep these 'lives' separate with separate people? I don't even have time to switch personalities so often...so I can't even see him as often as he and I both would like to meet. (Just friends, mind you!)

I didn't think that it would be this weird, figured that so many do it, why don't I ...and now I am in a deep end of the pool.

Would you tell? HELP!

If you don't interact with the same people on both accounts then it shouldn't be an issue. I think it's good to have an alt account that you can go on to relax and just do your own thing.

If you've already met him with the alt account then you're in a tricky situation, and only you can decide whether to tell him or not. When you create an alt it's always best to go into it with an idea of how you're going to handle it already fixed in your mind. Decide before going into it whether you'll tell your friends about the new you, or not.

If it's going to be an alt that you're using to have some time alone, or to experiment with being another sex/species/whatever, then you might want to keep the alt to yourself, in which case you mustn't frequent the same places that you do when you're on your main account. If you *do* frequent the same places, then eventually you're going to run into old friends and have the dilemma that you're having right now.

I will say this: if you're going to tell him, do it sooner rather than later, especially if you've already met him inworld. The longer you leave it, the more upset he's likely to be that you were withholding that information from him.

I have my main and my alt. I tell my real friends about the alt and the rest can figure it out by reading the alt's profile. It's not a secret to me.

So, as Skell said, one should consider how one wants to handle such situations in advance of creating the alt. In fact, one might want to consider why one would want to create an alt in the first place and that could set the pattern for how to handle the friends.

Thank you so much for your answers. I think I will tell him...this far I have not done anything I wouldn't have do as me. So...I may loose a friend, or get a friend that is closer than before. Only one way to find out.

I have several alts- they don't get out much- the important people in my life know of them - some are friended- again- it's not like the get out much so it makes no difference to me on that account. The real dilemma I encountered though was- I can't be different people so it made no sense to have the alts be active :)

Unless you have a predetermined reason for an alt there is little point in having one.

Pep (And running away from someone is NOT a good reason)

to the OP i think that's all about your personal morals.
Anyone i call a "friend" knows all my alts. It seems deceptive (to me) for me not to tell them. People i interactive with casually (like some random person i meet in a store, or while i move through some RP realm) i won't tell, but anyone i call 'friend', i tell all my alts to).

Other people have their own version of morality.. only you can decide where your morals lie.

Amen sister! I can understand the need for an alt if you own a biz and you don't wanna shit where you sleep, but why else is there a need for 2 inventories, two friend lists, two everything. Seems crazy and really multiple personality disorder inducing to me!

I have an alt that I created just for roleplaying. I have one friend from outside the RP who is also involved in the RP - I think he is the only person that's met both. As for the rest of my friends, they mostly know I have an alt, and they mostly know his name (or they would do if they've read my blog), but I never meet them as the alt. And the people I meet in the RP as my alt, they don't need to know about my main so I just don't tell them.

lots of reasons ...

You can have more than 25 groups
You can test permissions on land and stuff you make
You can test scripts
You can reposition poseballs without boring your friend sh*tless
You can build without being disturbed
You can make a more immersive RP character, separate from your usual identity
You can reserve a cool name
You can use your alt to store vast chunks of your inventory, or as a savings account

...

and for the full MPD experience, try running both together LOL

That is a good list, I like it. Point taken! Although, for building, what is wrong with setting to busy? With the poseballs, does that mean that you log on with both at the same time and reposition yourself? That might be interesting, brings a whole new meaning to threesomes!

Just get dual monitors, use the -multiple to run 2 accouns at once, thenyou can both be in the sa,me place at same time, or elsewhere, it gets damn confusing with different conversations, and there's always the worry at the end of a big night involving a few drinks that you could find one of your alts is hitting on the other one :)

You can set to busy, but you will then miss any IM's or inventory offers. I don't think many people use busy mode, possibly for this reason.

NUFFINK? explain to the newb plz
In busy mode, IMs are logged. You don't lose them. Ya, the inventory thing is annoying. I have been set to busy and bought something on SLX. That was a PITA. I ended up getting it, but wasted energy I could have been using for more EXCITING things.

It's ok, it's not some weird acronym or anything - just a South London phonetic spelling of "nothing" (I am not quite as posh as I occasionally like to pretend I am) :)

That's interesting about IM's in busy mode - I never knew that.

Aslo - You can find and exorcise your own ghost (I believe. I was only a ghost once and wasn't set up for my alt to find me).

Gita,
Honesty really is the best policy. Unless you plan on abandoning the main, tell him who you are and why you are an alt. There is enough drama in SL to go around; there is no need to create more.

It's OK to disclose your alt/main to someone. It is (or can be) OK to NOT disclose.

The main problem arises when you interact as an alt with people who know you as someone else. It is very easy to play head games with people in this way, because you know who they are, but THEY do not know who YOU are.

In my opinion, head games of this sort are possibly the nastiest thing you can do to someone in SL. Anyone who tries this game with me ("Hi there! I'm someone you know, hehehe...";) gets instantly muted.

If you DO decide to use your alt to interact with people who know you as someone else, there are only two ways to play fair. The easiest way is to simply tell them.

The other way requires discretion, care, excellent roleplaying ability, and brutal honesty with yourself. You must play the alt as a completely different person, suppressing everything you know about your friends. You must never use anything that, as your alt, you would not know about the other person to take any sort of advantage.

Few people are up to this. I know that I'm not. My alts are either known to my friends, or hang out with a completely different set.

OK, time to update my situation.

I told my new friend about old me, and surprise, he was fine with it, and now I have him as a friend with the real ava. Couldn't have gone better! <big smile>

Very good points, all of you.

And yes, I am one of those miss goodietoo shoes, who can not lie, no matter what I do. So, I will keep my alt just for...hmm...what do I keep her for? (I like her inventory. And her body is great too.) I keep her just in case someting happens to my original one. Yep. Thats it.

As opposed to the East London version which drops the final "K"
