I just wanted to provide an update regarding this situation. Even though my friend did click the "agree" button on the big yellow money box... she filed a support ticket, spoke to people on the phone at LL... and today a Linden visited her inworld (in front of myself and several other people) and refunded all the money that was taken out of her account.
It is nice to see that LL is starting to realize that these "scams" are becoming rampant inworld. So thank you LL for resolving this issue for my friend.
I have seen time after time, where people post that they have had Lindens robbed from their accounts. And today it happened to a dear friend of mine. The difference with her story is, it appeared as though it was coming to her from a "friend", when in fact it was not. That's the only reason why she accepted the inventory offer. And as the rest of the story goes, she rezzed and poof, there went the Lindens.
So the crooks are getting smarter now.
But my true question here is... has Linden Labs ever refunded stolen funds to anyone? What's your experience?
In my opinion... if LL claims that the Linden has "no value" ... they should be more then happy to refund said funds, without issue... once it is verified that they have been removed from the account.
Please share thoughts and experiences.
Thanks!!

FYI... you can't "rez and poof"... you still have to authorize lindens to be taken from your account (BIG YELLOW WARNING BOX).

Please read and see that I stated it claimed it was coming from a friend. Therefore she trusted it. It did NOT come from a friend. Which is why I stated the crooks are getting smarter.

i don`t get it, commen sense would say to decline debit if the object is from a stranger
"would you give a complete stranger your bankpass and pin?" 100% of the people would say "hell no", in SL "o.O shiny popup must click yes..."

From: Lauralynne Cuddihy But my true question here is... has Linden Labs ever refunded stolen funds to anyone? What's your experience? They do not. Linden considers this a resident-to-resident dispute, and flatly won't get involved, as much as it sucks your friend got ripped off From: someone In my opinion... if LL claims that the Linden has "no value" ... they should be more then happy to refund said funds, without issue... once it is verified that they have been removed from the account. It may seem this simple on the surface - but we have an active & complex economy. Money 'created out of thin air' without an appropriate 'sink' to balance it out can cause it to become volitle. Linden (as its steward) has to manage those sinks & sources to keep it stable - regardless of any RL value.

Two people, _two_, fell for one of these stupid money stealing objects at my place the other night.. /me ponders adding a JIRA to block a user from even seeing the debit pop-up unless they toggled some Preference. Maybe they'd see a message instead saying "you must enable scriptable debits first" sorta deal. edit: From: VWR-4495 New preference to disable/auto-decline debit permissions by default

cant make anything idiot proof. Until common sense is used and some reading skills are used this will continue.

look how long it took SL to change the land purchasing to make it 'safer for new players and naive ones' and they still keep getting their land stolen. so no matter how many changes SL does its still gonna happen when all they really have to do is READ.

Have HER come here with a snippet from her chat log which will show exactly who gave her the object (with or without names blanked, I don't care) and let us see exactly what happened.

People need to learn to read things before clicking the yes/grant button.

Sorry, Lauralynne, I know it seems like your friend isn't getting much sympathy here but things just don't go "poof" in SL. There is no one in SL that I trust enough to turn over my Lindens to. Well, actually, my RL hubby but I'd be wondering why he would use that method. A message popped up asking if she was willing to authorize her funds. It can only be presumed she didn't read. That makes it her error. Plain and simple. To answer your question. People lost thousands in the bank scam and haven't seen a penny as a result so I doubt they're going to give this the time of day. From: Lauralynne Cuddihy In my opinion... if LL claims that the Linden has "no value" ... they should be more then happy to refund said funds, without issue Valid point and one that you'll never get answered. One of those mysterious gray areas.

Thanks!! We had an incident last week where a resident passed a fake rental box which emptied 41k from a friend of mine. Said friend created a ticket, called the concierge, and withing 20 minutes the resident passing the fake rental box had her account disabled, and within 2 hours my friend had his lindens returned. whisper.

I guess no one here except me that has had lag so bad that pop ups or something else goes wrong. I don't shop much because often certain shops refuse to list their price and prims clearly but I can check buy price through but I have to click okay but few times instead of "cancel" because of lag issues I clicked okay and bought something accidentally. My policy is now is never accept things, shop selectively and only click pay if I truly want too. By the way not every one has the yellow warning box. I don't and I don't know why, truthfully I don't want to hunt down the right version to do that because I have updated all the mandatory required updates and its not included.

I would say if there's really bad lag, especially server side lag, postpone your shopping. No tranfers to and from inventory. It's better to wait till it blows over and be safe.

It's an issue that I've heard developers call the "ActiveX problem". Essentially, you're asked to trust something or not, but the question is meaningless because you can't find out any information about it to make that decision with. It applies to browser ActiveX controls too, where the user is asked to trust a control before using it. Technically you should never trust anything unless you are completely sure, but if you follow that advice then you would not even have Flash on your browser because you can never be completely sure (even something claiming to be Flash might not be).
I've tried to write a "money handling trust script" to abate this problem which is on the Scripting Tips forum (quite a while ago, now) but it would have trouble with public information. What's really needed is a greater range of debit permissions..

I have last required update when voice came out. I still have a blue box. I think sometimes my lag is due to crappy cable isp, and perhaps because I have pretty much close to minimum required to play SL. I can't afford to upgrade my computer. My sim mates/sl friends have convinced me to no longer pay tier and have given me land because they know I can't afford to spend any more.

I always love hearing when the Lindens actually do something to help. I haven't dealt with them too much but at least few times have good experience.
