So how big do you think SL is now?

<snip>

According to the economic statistics page, there are 17,294 islands owned as of today (May MTD number).

17,294 x 65,536 = 1,133,379,584

So, as of approximately now, there are 1 billion, 133 million, 379 thousand, and 584 square meters.

I don't know if the island number includes mainland. It seems like it might, but I'm not sure.

Either way, that's a hell of a lot of space.

Only when you express it like that. Less than 1500 square kilometres. Still sounds a lot? If it was a square piece of land, 38km across. About the length of a marathon, that an athlete could cover in under 3 hours or a fit hiker could cross in a day.

Still sounds like a lot to me, yesh.

Saying it like that makes it seem small, of course, because they are smaller numbers.

But to me, 1500 km seems like a lot (And yeah, I know, I'm biased by miles, but oh well)

That's what, 3 times the size of Guam?

Out by a factor of 1000, I believe. 1445 square km, or a little smaller than Greater London or Houston. That'd put SL 182nd in terms of largest nations by area (just behind Guadeloupe).

Guadeloupe eh?

Guess my calculations were off.

Watch out Luxembourg here we come!!

You don't need to know the overall dimensions of the grid.

If there are 22,051 regions, each one 65,536 sq meters, the total area of the grid is

1,445,134,336 sq meters, or 1,445 square kilometers. By comparison, New York City is about 1,200 square kilometers in size, not counting bodies of water (and of course, the SL figure DOES count a large water area).

The reason SL appears so empty is simple. If, say, we have an average concurrency of 50,000, that means an average of just over two avatars per sim. Of course, we aren't spread out evenly, but tend to clump at popular places and events. This leads to most sims being empty most of the time.

[EDIT: I see a number of folks beat me to it.]

The problem is, of course, that SL's sizes aren't exactly on-par with RL. You can make something more or less to scale with New York city without using up most of the grid, I'm pretty sure.

Don't forget, scale is a little off.

Everyone is 6 feet tall easy, and all attachments are scaled accordingly.

So does that make our world smaller?

I don't think metric meters are the right scale measurement.

Maybe gridmeters (= 0.8 m) or maybe secondlife Units or something.

How big is SL? About the size of a few dozen racks in a datacenter. A generous estimate (ignoring plenums) would then be 1400m^2 or about a thrid of an acre. I could walk the length and breadth of this in about a minute.

It's actually a few data centers that are many miles apart. So you'd have to catch a plane to get from one side to the other. :p

Something like this?

I would say 100 square meters or so.

Counting maximum x and y distances from the regions near the borders of sl with this script, that tells the position relative to "Da Boom", distance in m:

vector vecrel; //sum of llgetpos and llgetregioncorner
default
{state_entry(){llSetText("Touch me to get your position", <1,1,1>, 2.0);
}touch_start(integer total_number){
vecrel = llGetRegionCorner() + llGetPos();
llWhisper(0, "llGetRegionCorner() is:"+(string)vecrel ); //for debugging before vector addition
vecrel.x = vecrel.x - 256000;vecrel.y = vecrel.y - 256000;
llWhisper (0, "Position relative to <0,0,0> of 'Da Boom': "+ (string)llRound(vecrel.x) +", "+ (string)llRound(vecrel.y) +", "+ (string)llRound(vecrel.z) + ".";);
llWhisper(0, "Position relative to <0,0,0> of 'Da Boom':"+(string)vecrel ); //faster but unformatted output
}}

Know how many regions there are within that area to calculate to what % it is full with regions.
