I think its around the size of Honduras...

at this rate we will be one of the 100 biggest nations pretty soon.

Or are my calculations way off? :)

I know this sounds very snarky, but I'm gonna go with 'too darned big.'

I'd go with the size of a nation easily.

last time I checked region distances, SL is roughly the size of london, and flooded to over 80% because in sl theres lots of water in between the regions and if everything is build 1,25 times as big on the remaining hills aka. mainland continents.

Id like to see it back to pre-island days.... Its completely to big now and quickly outgrowing its usefulness.

Land wise its grown a lot, population wise... meh no one will ever know.

How do you easily know the size of the grid in total? (x regions across by y regions up and down)

How do you easily find the bounding box of non-void sims in the grid?

I'm not so sure. There's lots of sims, yeah, but it takes what - one minute? Less? - to walk all the way across one. If the grid is 250 sims across, then it's roughly as wide as the distance you can walk in RL in 4 hours. About as big, I think, as 1 mid-size city.

I have the number of Simulators that were on the Grid, a while ago so it would have gotten a lot larger since then. Just trying to find them.

This is from a few months ago, but back then hhe whole grid consisted of 16122 regions, approx half of them being mainland. New added daily, so it will be alllot bigger now.

There are 22051 Regions.

17362 Regions are Estate

4689 Regions are Mainland

At about 65k sq. meters per region, I think it comes to around 1.4 million square kilometers. Bigger than Indianapolis, smaller than Milan.

How do you know it's square?

How do you easily know the total number?

Is "the size of the grid" something other than a number arbitrarily defined?

Is there an LSL function like "llNumberOfRegions"?

Well this is why I put a question mark at the end of my suggestion. I wasn't sure whether you was talking about rearranging the sims into a compact grid. :)

But if you just wanted to put a bounding box around the sims on the current grid then you'd have to manually look to see which sim is furthest north, south, east and west and then visit those sims and get their global position with llGetRegionCorner( ).

There's a way to find out the Number of Regions on the sim, I know there's a way for Lindens to do it but I'm not too sure on the Resident way to do it. Sorry >>.<<

With the total number of sims x Area on sim = Total Grid Size?

Out by a factor of 1000, I believe. 1445 square km, or a little smaller than Greater London or Houston. That'd put SL 182nd in terms of largest nations by area (just behind Guadeloupe).

Maybe the grid is big enough in terms of ownable land for the time being. What would be nice would be more low-prim openspace sea regions around the mainland areas and connecting them for people to sail, swim or fly in.

The total number of sims doesn't determine the grid size?. There could be just two sims and yet those two sims could be a billion meters apart.

But this is getting into semantics and so it's impossible to know what the hell anybody is really asking here.

Tom: What colour is the sky?

Jerry: Blue

Tom: But I mean at night

Jerry: Red?

Tom: No, I mean later when the sun goes right down.

Jerry: Black? Grey? Black with white dots?.

Tom: I mean at the north pole.

Jerry: Multicolored?

Tom: Whatever..

So true. Lots and lots of beautiful sims with clubs and shops and malls. All empty. Being spread out as it is it’s a wonder anyone can find something to do with out feeling like you’re Will Smith in I Am Legend. That’s why I think so many return to the Welcome Areas, at least you know somebody will be there.

Well this would be just the land area, if brought together as one.

If you cannot physically travel on any of those billion meters (i.e., they're "in the void";), why should they count as anything? Think of the grid map as kinda like a flow chart. The lengths of the arrows between the options isn't a measure of how long it's supposed to take you to make the decision.

Well this would be just the land area, if brought together as one.

That's all that really matters.

Empty spaces have no area, and there is no way to measure their size. They are just..well, nothing.

When new regions are brought online, they don't just 'activate a section' or something, I don't believe, but tell it where to go, etc. It's not like they're just sitting dormant, or they would have to be running all of their servers at maximum capacity indefinitely, and their would be no reason for a tier fee (Since they'd be paying maintenance on it anyway).

The only measurable space for the grid is the used size.

According to the economic statistics page, there are 17,294 islands owned as of today (May MTD number).

17,294 x 65,536 = 1,133,379,584

So, as of approximately now, there are 1 billion, 133 million, 379 thousand, and 584 square meters.

I don't know if the island number includes mainland. It seems like it might, but I'm not sure.

Either way, that's a hell of a lot of space.

Well that's your idea of the grid size. and it's very logical!. I'm just not so sure that everybody in this thread shares it. :)

But when enquiring about the bigness of something then we're usually asking about its volume and not its mass or density.

I sound like I'm bald now :(
