I have a parcel where there's a 32m piece in a corner that my land surrounds on 4 sides. The 32m piece was empty for long enough, but then ads appeared above it, so I erected a tower around the ads so that they couldn't be seen. The owner raised his ads, and I raised my tower.

Then he IMed me and accused me of blocking access to his land. I wasn't going to change anything, so he said he would AR me - and that's the last I heard of it. My tower still covers his ads, and if he gets stroppy I'll ban him from my land so that, to reach it, he'll need to negotiate a very tall funnel :)

Excellent. Wish you every luck with that!

Was just saying last night that I'd consider bringing my sky garden down to the ground if the view would not be so dismal. I will get build urge again all too soon and want to actually DO it ... I can see that happening all too clearly.

You can't block access due to the Point to Point TP in SL, but if you want to avoid arguing with dense Lindens, set the prims to Phantom. That way they still block the view, but allow access.

You may also want to be sure they aren't banned from the surrounding land. I'm not sure this is necessary, but when I fenced-in "my" adfarmers, I split off that part of the land so the Clocktower Network probe wouldn't ban them and thereby advance a possible argument that I'd blocked them off.

I also made the surrounding prims full-alpha on the adfarmers' side (as well as setting everything phantom). I even eschewed megaprims for the blocking, just in case they tried to use that argument. (Takes a lot of regular-sized prims to chase them all the way to the cloud layer, as I had to do with a particularly tenacious one.)

I was being extra careful because... well, now, if one tries to click an ad, one instead gets an anti-adfarm information kit. ;)

Sorry for being dense(or new), but what exactly is an adfarm(er)?

They buy land, slice them up into 16m plots (very small land plots) and then put up annoying/offensive ads, sometimes with spinning prims, particles, or laggy scripts, and set the land for sale for rediculous amounts. Example 16m for sale for 15,000L$

Most of us call it extortion.

Adfarmers are entities that require an infinity of bricks to hide them.

*ugh* They are like popup ads! or Spam when you web surf #@!
And I can't imagine anyone actually using them!
I hate them and don't see popup ads on any browsers,
so hate to see ad farms in any view while visiting SL.

I know that people say that one should never buy ad plots no matter what. To buy them even in a good cause is to perpetuate the business model of the adfarmer.

I think that it's OK to buy strategic plots that can be used to hide other plots.
I've done that in Dunnylun by buying the front rank of plots and a few of the cheaper internal plots. That was just enough to make a boat-rezzing plot. Currently, there's just a free canoe rezzer there, but I'm thinking of making it build for all with a short auto-return.

hmmm has anyone ever made an invisible prim and surrounded the ad plot with that, which when clicked will give out an anti ad plot notecard

heh

Unfortunately, when you buy land from an ad farmer, he just uses that money to buy even more land, often in the same sim, and carve it up into more ad farms. That is how they make money at this - by extortion land sales - people like you paying them off just to get rid of them.

Screens, towers, barriers - whatever you want to call them - are the main practical solution available to Residents at this time. Get nice ones, use them, enjoy them, and starve an adfarmer today! And NEVER NEVER buy an adlot. Every time you buy an adlot a puppy or a kitten dies. A nice, sweet, warm kitten or puppy, with big, soulful eyes that will look at you reproachfully for all eternity.

what amazed me was the auction plot right in the middle of all this. and if memory serves me, the plot was being bid on.

edit> tho the L$30K plots will remain as ad plots. neither of us is THAT desperate.

I seen 16m for sale at $1million Linden I wonder if they some how manipulate the average land prices too,
I usually send them an offer for $200 telling them their little plot is worth nothing because it's in the middle of adfarming plots.

At the moment I'm buying a few cheap 16m plots to sell my two new half-timbered houses (boxed) from. I set the plots for sale again at about 20L$ above what I paid for them. So they are of genuine use to me while my goods are on them - if someone buys the land I make a small profit, while advertisers are a bit less likely to buy as they usually go for the cheapest plots, unless they are genuine roadside ones!

make all your walls phantom, and invisible from the inside out. he can get in, therefore not blocked. he can see out, therefore his view is not blocked. he is not inconvenienced in any way while on his own land. LOLOL

I've made one wall phantom and clear from the inside, so he has no complaints now. He can actually look out over the water :)

2 of the other 3 sides would look onto a secluded area, so they'll stay opaque, and the 4th side is a 50/50 decision. I decided to leave it as it is. He can now happily walk onto his land, so he should be delighted lol

if you want an object that dectects the ads height may be used.

though in reality nothing will happen as ad farmers checking their turf seems a bit out there.

Don't forget you can always IM someone selling one of those "ad" plots and see how low he/she will go. I got quite a few to sell to me at a fair price. Others just laughed at me, but really, many would sell at a fair price when I made an offer.
