From: Colette Meiji Once hes safe from their theft - hes going to need to file Abuse Reports on those two scum. The problem is they didn't do anythign illegal. Only immoral *grumbles* That's why LL won't do a darn thing. Though if enough people that they scam AR them....*shrugs* If you can understand LL's logic, you're doing better than I. ~Jessy

Thanks everyone. The manner in which I have been so generously helped here more than makes up for my unfortunate experience.
I apologize for not reading the Guidelines before posting.

Okay, but still - I have never seen a take inventory description in my transaction history. Give inventory, yes. Object pays, yes. Take inventory? I am sorry, but I have my doubts.

~Jessy This needs fixed. The entire Debit permissions system needs overhauled. Perhaps they should basically NOT allow Debit permisions to work on avatars less than 1 week old. You should be able to control your debit permisions with the same level of detail as your friends list.

I am sorry, but I have my doubts. Then IM him in world and explain to him how to give you that HUD. Try it out and let us know. *Grins* Seriously, he asked for help, but didn't ask for L$, nor did he rant and rave. The name could be a new thing by the scammers or even by LL *Shrugs* Short of being in his avatar, no way to know what actually happened, but for the help that was asked for and recieved, I don't see a need to go all suspicious. ~Jessy

Or grid stability? Or... Heh, I hope LL has a big plate. They have a lot on it to chew. Though I do agree, things that "steal" money from others should be at the TOP of the list of thigns to fix. ~Jessy

From: Millibar Maggs I'm at the Freebie Store on Help Island - is it safe to acquire things here? Yes but whenever you rez or attach an object ALWYAS read the pop ups that accompany it. Never say yes to debit permissions unless you are placing a Vendor or some related device, whose creator you trust. Try Yadni's Junk Yard - he has really good freebies there to keep you busy. Make sure you Abuse reported those two people for scamming you.

Should be. You can also go to the Free Dove for cool freebies. Use the Search button, click on the Places tab, then type in 'Free Dove' on the search line. It's the very first listing. Click the Teleport button and you should pop right in. Keep in mind that it's usually very busy, so it might be hard to move around. It's very helpful and well organized too.

Make sure you Abuse reported those two people for scamming you. Someone is distributing a box of freebie vendors modified so that one of them takes all your money..be careful of those. Sort of a social engineering thing. Try one out, okay, it's good...try another and another until you accept debit permissions to the wrong one and all your money is gone. It sucks and it's dispicable. And yes, do Abuse Report any that use those sort of scripts.

I've tagged this for LR so they can prod the abuse team. You should file an abuse report if you haven't already.

From: Colette Meiji You wear clothes - which cant steal you money and Objects, which can if they are scripted with debit permissions and you clicked "yes" Basically its a script used for things like making change, etc. You need to remove all objects you have attached to your avatar the pie menu on your avatar there is a "Detach" option. Sadly not strictly true.. I have heard of a clothing attachment (using the name 'Clothing specifically for the newcomers benefit) that when worn, have a prim attachment which can be anything primed, that also asks for debit permissions when worn. Don't mean to contradict, just clarify. Millibar Maggs if you IM me ingame, I can give you a lot of folders full of safe clothing and accessories.

Money theft seams like a new fad since gambling is gone. Probably just me and my wild guesses though.

Stealing L$ from newbies on Orientation Island is a new kind of low.
Yiffy, maybe it's not so much that there's more stealing with gambling gone, it's just that the forum posts about theft stand out more now that there's no more need for the "Rigged game at casino didn't pay me my winnings!" threads.

Possibly that. Just a hunch though. The people who are so desperate for money would do anything.

There are several jira entries dealing with PERMISSION_DEBIT. Unfortunately, the most thoughtfully commented one, was marked "fixed" when the new orange-flavored permissions dialog was introduced. I've just linked as related two of them that remain open: , and . This is a very serious problem because an errant granting of permissions is an infinite-duration time-bomb, and can be associated with a script in any prim anywhere in-world (not just attachments, in case anyone is confused about that).

From: Jessica Elytis ... I don't see a need to go all suspicious. Just fwiw, I didn't actually read Cristalle's post that way. I too looked in my Transactions History (have a few vendor-like scripts with debit perms) to see if I could confirm that "Take Inventory" transaction type was associated with debit perms, and didn't find it, so I was concerned--as Cristalle may have been--that some *other* kind of theft was happening. (I still haven't confirmed this by getting an alt to take some L$s from one of those scripts, but I gather by now others must have confirmed the transaction type matches that generated by PERMISSION_DEBIT charges.)

What has always driven those who steal/scam whatever, from those considered 'honest'?.. to do as little for the most gain. Evolution of so many companies and markets are developed, thrive and gain most investment, simply in an attempt to stave off the ever growing population of theives/scammers.. even those who's only gain is notoriety (virus creators). For the most part, it is the only way they can acheive anything in life... they don't care about bad reputations, because they don't carry them.. they create new ones so they can hide and continue their endevours. All the internet has done, is give them a greater scope in fishing for more candidates in a larger pond, whereby even their location can be hidden. Internet fraud/theft is on the increase and makes the Great Train Robbery, look like a pickpocket on the loose, even those fellos put in a lot of time, effort, investment and planning to get their ill gotten gains, now with the internet, you can copy someone elses scam and throw the lure into another section of the ever increasing pond called the Internet.
