Many regions offline
Posted by Status Desk on September 2nd, 2009 at 09:04 am PDT

[Wednesday, September 02, 09:01am PST] Due to problems in one of our colocations, many regions are currently offline. Our engineers are already at work to fix this as soon as possible. We will update any news here as they become available.

[09:06am PST] We have temporarily closed logins to alleviate load on our database. This problem also affects our asset servers, please do not rez any no-copy items at this time, or make any transactions as they may fail.

These things are frustrating and y'all probably don't want to hear this but the grid is a WHOLE LOT more stable than it used to be.

I lived through the 2 solid day outage in 2004

numerous 12 hour or so outages in 2005

a whole week of everything being grey (I mean everything, land buildings sky, avatars) after a badly done update)

grifer attacks that could take down the whole grid (thats pre the grey goo fence)

I admit these borkups lately are annoying since they seem to hit almost daily but so far at least they have been short and its been possible to work around them. :)

It could be much MUCH worse

I lived through the late 07 and most of the 08 problem periods. and Ive come to live with this. it's a live platform that runs 24/7, it's not always going to be consitant xD and you hit the nail on the head too with alot of old issues that I am glad are not around any more (12 hours shutdowns were bad)

I always just go to the blog and look in the top-right - there's a link there to the grid status page.

Oh, yes. Far, far worse. Self-replicator grid attacks were in vogue when I joined. Seemed like the whole grid was borked, every weekend, for a while there.

Not as old as you- but let's not forget when the weekly no access was part of our predictable experience... at least now it's a .. bonus?

this new SL site just irks me...
09-02-2009 09:21
I mean things like not trying to rez no copy items is important!
Im not loving whoever is in charge of marketing right now, id much rather know important info about the grid, than where to find the best shoes today.

it was a general message letting people know they had to disable some items to help get the load off there already over stressed asset machine. and lol I agree, who needs shoes

I Agree But

I agree that the grid is a lot more stable than it was when I originally came on even a year ago....BUT....maybe....just a thought...they could stop monkeying with the website and XStreet and take that time and resources to run preventative maintenance on the servers...yes the new site is real pretty, but its another unnecessary change that didn't need to happen (so says the woman who has changed her club 8 times in the past 5 months) giggles

I could just imagine what it would take to do that. it would require from my IT stand point to take the whole platform down and debug it and then start making the nessacary changes. but there investors would not be happy so I would never expect to see this happen.

If you have read some of my past posts on all these "upgrades" I couldnt agree more. I have been saying concentrate on stability first for years.

True story

about 3 years ago I was standing on my land talking to one of the bug squasher lindens when his AV suddenly did the head up the butt foldup that sometimes happens. I told him he was doing that and he told me that that bug has been around since pre beta and NO ONE has ever been able to figure out why "Head up your a$$ disease" happens. He falt said the code for SL is such a mess there is alot of stuff that even thier own coders cant figure out what its for.

spaggetti anyone?
