LL really needs to work on getting more people on a single sim with less lag. Right now we have the old 'ghost town' perception because there's just way too many islands and continents and people are happy playing by themselves in a low lag environment. I really have no idea what kind of problem it would be to make a sim hold say... 100 people at a time. But they gotta do it. And we need to cut back on land.

And... and... what do you think? Good idea? Ok what's your idea then?

I'm not against the idea, though there are technical reasons that will make it difficult to implement. I'm forever explaining to newbies why "the grid seems so empty".

Yeah SL just wasn't made to scale this way.

I'm not sure it is completely a lag issue. I know with my newer computer (not really top of the line) lag is much more tolerable even at packed places like Dance Island. I think I would put up with lag if the attraction was interesting enough.

I think there just needs to be more fun events that are not necessarily the meat market experience of dance clubs. I'd like to see more silly games -- I don't know, parachuting contests, aardvark racing, 3d charades using building, stunt flying teams, an aerial version of bumper cars, parcel beauty contests (in 512, 1024, 2048, and 4096 categories), etc.

Those kinds of things would bring me out of seclusion. Hey - maybe I should learn to be an event organizer, but I think one needs to be pretty outgoing, not to mention organized, for this.

I love all of your ideas, Wes. This one we actually do for fun at GQ Start. We call it "Primtionary". The referee picks the word, and the selected player is required to build something that will let the others guess the word.

First person to guess correctly wins.

The strange emptiness of many sims suits people who are solitary by their real nature or simply faced with too many people in their real world. There's a lot to do for people who seek company - even the forum provides for the people who enjoy that form of cameraderie. If you need aloneness (like I often do) then spending an hour on teh screen listening to music is a great pastime.
Can groups intermingle here anyway? I mean that the format prevents the human ability of processing out information we dont want when we are in crowds. The thought of struggling with crowds in sl sounds ominous; "Yay!! Let's all have fun together!!" kinda thing. Mind you, I do remember busier malls, packed pubs and brothels jammed with clients. That was when this place was more like Deadwood than Bollywood.

Yes I must admit I, for one, am all for more people in smaller spaces. There would still be more than enough empty areas to hide in.It drives me nuts to get super lag in even moderately busy places.I went fishing ,for instance, today and there were perhaps 10 avs and I could hardly move.I tp'd off to fish on my own . Unfortunately you can't talk to fish.

I really like my alone time wish I could have several private island hermit place
yet I have thought about what it would be like to have virtual world too that
people interact and do more things together that are focused on fun activities.
But this require a whole lot of money and different type of structure of how things
work on sims and I don't foresee any one average Resident being able to pull it off.
There often this element in lot of virtual worlds I have visited.
It either populated by highly creative people who are loners who are off building in there
own space, dealing with virtual business and creating with no time for anything else after dealing with first life obligations.
Or world is more geared to combat, quest, gaming or gambling type of game play in 3d or sometimes 2d or simple email like system, bbs like forum and sometimes more
complex chat room environment.
Usually the gamers or creative types keep to themselves or those semi social or more social tend to hang out in the chat section and often the only there is more draw to group activities if their is built in reward type system or belonging to group can help you achieve
your own goals i.e leveling, combat group protection, training, community dwell bonuses, etc.
Second Life isn't really set up like that and often when ever you get a whole of prims, fancy
clothes, flexible skirts and hair and the Residents in any one place it tends to cause problems at least on my computer.
I am sorry I just don't find going to clubs to dance fun but everyone and their Fairy Godmother seems to own or hang out in Clubs Maybe I can see going occasionally trip to music event now and then but club hopping, dancing just isn't fun for me, just makes me feel like I am stuck in very gray place with lot of people text shouting,"Woot" and gesturing with tons of lag.
If I want to go club hopping I can do that in first life
I rather do things I can't do anywhere else on SL.
I wish there were more games that were fun building type games and similar distractions to do in SL personally.
I have thought up Prim RPG type board games but it so hard to play all by yourself
and it not like there lot of options to do something new if those have only limited amount
time and are distracted by other already established activities like shopping, running their own business or Clubs, Dancing, Gor or whatever RPG group they are into or whatever other activities, games out there that is possible to play like Slingo, Dictionary.etc

I used to go to the Wild cCast Resort every day now only rarely because of laggy movement. Interesting you blame people numbers for lag. It lags there with hardly anyone there. I had put the lag down to too many things there and much detail for SL to cope with. It's a beautiful place but spoilt by lag.
What ever I hope it improves as I want to go back there.
Love
June
PS I got a good PC and do not have the problem in other areas I go.

For me lag has gotten worse this year because one the system requirements
seem to have gone up, I need better video card, more memory even though
I increased my isp connection recently I realize it is my computer.
Only thing I can do is just cut back my spending until I can save
enough for better computer to go exploring,etc..
Also what is on the sim also effects me if they got over half or all of the
prims in use, more then 100 or more scripts running I am suffering big time with like 3 fps or lower.

Darnit! I was so enjoying SL. Is there a similar system for dense people?

And no, you can't have my stuff. The bearer of the bad news gets nothing.

if P can't have your stuff, can I? >=)

personally a dense SL to me means a dense LL... and I'm sure at times we have THAT...

you might want to think about what you're wishing for though... more population density means more Aherns and Mall People.... probably in your back yard... catch my drift?

If LL could somehow upgrade Second Life so it was possible to get, perhaps, 256 people in a single sim with no noticable lag, that would be wonderful.

But they would also need to improve access controls and parcel division to make those features truly 3D, so you could have, for example, an office building with ten floors, and have each floor of the building, or even part of a floor here or there, set aside as a seperate parcel for the purpose of media streams, access controls, and voice chat channels.

I don't think they need to reduce the available land area, however. Just stop pumping out new mainland at insane rates and flooding the market.

But LL won't ever stop making mainland, because they make money on all those whole-sim auctions and on the subsequent tier fees for all that new land. Asking them to stop making mainland, or to reduce the amount of land in SL, is like asking McDonalds to stop making hamburgers.

Many residents clearly want wide open spaces with few people in sight. That's one of the reasons that Openspaces have been so popular; people want land with a lot of visual privacy. To be fair, another reason is that people want estate-level control of their land, which are the only way to get full privacy in Second Life, and Openspaces were the least expensive way to get it.

I'd like to see some more well-done dense spaces; wide-open areas are nice sometimes, but critical mass of company is also nice sometimes. But for that to really work, we need more control over chat so we don't hear everything through the paper-thin walls and floors. And we need sims that can actually handle 100 or more avatars without crashing and excessive lag.

Population density is a function of high prices x high prim counts.

It's human nature at work.

15,000 prims simply aren't enough to share among even 50 people. For those that remember First Land, remember how fast those regions consolidated. Even before it was gamed.

Second, if you can afford the space anyway, you'll get as much as you can regardless of the prims.
