I wouldn't be happy, I'd be cataleptic from the shock.

Umm it's not a MySQL database... they are still using multiple interlinked access databases.. the upgrade is to MySQL

My guess - IBM takes over and SL browser will only be available to run in OS/2 (looks for the ancient install CD or was it a floppy).

Floppy disks. Ah the memories. I haven't touched a floppy disk in years now. In fact, my new computer at work and at home don't even have floppy drives! My how times have changed.

I'm thinking the announcement will be shadows and pixle light too!

That would be wonderful, if it meant that IBM would be helping Teh Lab improve stability and scalability.

I believe that whatever it is they plan to announce, it will be absolutely worthless, like a "renewed focus on customer service" that sputters out after a week. Or a new Linden role/project specifically intended to engage the community, which will fade into obscurity within a month. Oh, wait, both of those have already happened.

Whatever it is, it will likely fit right in with Linden Lab's "untarnished reputation for mediocrity"™ when it comes to follow-through.

They'll probably announce that The Bay City Sims are almost done and will be up for auction....soon.

This is copied from the other thread because we seem to have two threads about the same thing.

From: someone

For what it's worth my shot in the dark is that they will open up the main grid so that if you have land or a portal on the main grid you can run your own regions on your own servers and tp in and out of the main grid. I suspect they will still control the currency of course but that means on your own server network you can create your own economies... something like that would be pretty fundamental. Why own an island sim when can have a continent and do whatever the hell you like and still get on the main grid ?

It could be an anti-climax too: the announcement of the revamped landmarks system, which would require a guest speaker since it's been worked on outside of LL

I believe the proiper sayin' is Cthulhu Fthagn. ;-)
Me, I'm expecting some sort of annoncement of changes with mainland. I also suspect it could have to do with some new initiatives around new member growth and retention. This to me seems the most likely. An ya, if they have any sense of whimsey, it *could* very well be Magellan Linden for the win.

I could also see someting about the open sims, or, yes, someone from IBM, Google, or other site giving us some news of a strategic partnership or someting.

Or maybe "Second Life 2.0" :-D

It's an interesting idea. I don't get exactly how it would work, though. Mostly because I'm not all that bright - sorry.

You would be hosting a sim or continent or whatever on your own server, and you could access the main grid through a portal on it. Could others access your server and join you there or would it be just you? If they could, wouldn't you need a pretty impressive server to keep everything running? Even if they couldn't, what would it take? I guess I just can't quite exactly picture how this would all work.

I think I love the idea, though. :)

To see what a Freestanding Sim on your own computer is like, you can download them from the open grid type projects such as openlifegrid.com--click the box that says "Run an island on your own PC." (free) and read instructions well. You will start with a empty island (as many as you want) alone in the ocean. and a basic avatar.

In an "open" grid you could tp to externally hosted sims, but nothing much would travel with you since those sims can't be trusted.

You'd start the tp as Trout and arrive as Ruth with a mostly bare inventory since most of what we wear and have in inventory isn't likely to be full permission.

I don't see much practical value in it at all honestly, if my inventory can't travel with me I'd just avoid tp'ing off the main grid.

Obviously it's in development and all that will have to worked out just like anything else.

How would you work it out?

You either send the untrusted sim whatever assets it asks for which means it can create a full permission copy of it at will, or you don't send it any assets that aren't full permission already and make it rather useless.

There isn't much of a middle ground there: you either decide to keep permissions intact, or you do away with them.

So.. What's the announcement? It doesn't sound like something they expect us to hate.

IPO? New CTO? Tier drop??

Linden Labs to sell SL to Google...

With a redo, which they should have started a few years ago after they realized the corner they had boxed themselves into.

No you use brains to find another way. If if their aren't smart enough brains hire some brains. Hint: they aren't going to be coming from free open source labor.

It's a lot more complicated than simply saying "let them get the information from the asset servers when a user hits these private sims"

There are the legal issues of doing what is necessary to protect the IP rights of the content creators.

The fact those hosted servers will not be on the backbone that is used by linden labs, so they will have serious performance issues. (even more so when you consider they will be on non-standardized systems)

The security, performance, and feasibility issues means it will take a long time before it could be done by linden labs in good faith with the users.

The open sim project is an example of what may happen, but it is still in development and they are learning how to work around the pitfalls of mainly just the technology side of things.

Interesting comments ;-)

I dont really see why this should be an issue - easily solved by some sort of premium account that you have to subscribe to to open the api for the asset server on your self-hosted sims.

Obviously the asset management would have to be black boxed or there could be all sort of troubles... maybe this is worth a thread not related to [a very important announcement]...
