I recieved this message from a nearby reservation space owner

[10:57] xxxx xxxx: Good afternoon Jackson, I own the reservation spaces around your sim group, I notice that you are blocked in and cannot grow anymore. I will offer to sell you 1 of these spaces for 500 USD plus paypal fees or, 2 spaces for 900 USD and paypal fees or all 3 spaces around your sims to the NW, W and SE for 1300 USD and I'll pay the PP fee's...Get back with me if you want to continue to grow

I simply cannot believe that this joker is trying to extort me into paying that amount of money for reseration fees...

Anyone else had slimeball offers like this?

Slimeball.

I recall LL stating that they wouldn't tolerate the use of the reservation system for abuse/extortion, so I would suggest getting in touch with concierge and include the above log.

edit to add: I hope and expect LL will be able to help you, but if you have no success, it would of course be cheaper for you to move the current sim to a new location that would allow you to expand. This creep is not only a slimeball, he's clearly a pretty stupid one.

Sadly I have 13 sims there, and he is surrrounding me with reservations, I thought LL was going to do away with them clearly they have more use as tools of extortion than legitimate placeholders for future sims.. if you aint got the money to buy the sim, you shouldnt be allowed to own rights to the gridspace

When LL announced the reservation system, many residents complained that it opened the door to abuse and extortion of this kind, and in response, LL stated they would not tolerate any such behavior. So, unless he has his own continent right next to yours so as to make it not so black and white, you should get in touch with concierge and hopefully they will sort it out for you.

Jackson, here is some text from the land store that at least outline's LL's recognition of the problem, and some semblance of a promise to deal with it:

From: from the land store FAQ

What if someone uses this tool to harass me?
Misuse of this tool constitutes a violation of the Community Standards policy on Harassment and will be dealt with accordingly. Bidding on auctions alone does not constitute harassment.

From: Ryan Linden

It also occurred to us that unscrupulous people might use the Land Store to grief others or bully them out of the continent building business. However, we thought about the SL community and realized that these attempts would be transparent and in most cases obvious. Which is why we plan to deal with any and all appropriately just as we do now when someone tries to checkerboard parcels within a region or bully others to sell land using lag inducing measures.

It ironically seems to prohibit adfarming, in my opinion, although I'm perplexed by the "as we do now" comment. Is "checkerboarding" some griefing tool of the past that no one talks about anymore?

Nevertheless, I think you should AR the person and maybe even cite this text here.

Non-issue. Ignore it and laugh.

Here's why.

The reservation system is no longer valid. Nobody pays into it!

Call concierge when you want to add a region. I'm pretty sure they will delete said old reservations instantly. Failing that, they will move your entire estate for free so you can grow.

Your extortionist is going to be *very* surprised :)

Go get 'em Jackson. I wish I could watch this go down... it would be a good laugh!

I don't think this is a mainland problem?

Its the islands reservation thing, right?

And Hiro's picture is pretty accurate.

No Colette, it's only an island thing.

I brought the mainland thing up because of what Ryan Linden said in his comment, where he compares the problem to "what we do now" on mainland. I assume he has to be talking about mainland since he says "within a region."

So, what's checkerboarding, and what do they "do now" to take care of it?

Yes, islands thing only.

Proof of my above statement, quoting everett linden from this blog post:

http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/09/12/introducing-the-new-second-life-auction-system/

"After the three month period, all unconverted reservations will be allowed to lapse. This does not alter the reserved area inherent around all regions automatically, and we still will not allow regions to be impinged upon nor allow “blocking” by others. Further details on island placements and moves will be discussed another post."

12 Sept 2007. The microwave went Ding! on these reservations a long time ago.

I believe that they did away with the reservations but would honor existing ones from a while back. This guy is just an ass, though, and boy does he have another think coming!

Des, just as an FYI the LL policy on this was changed. They are still honoring those reservations and I just got shot down trying to get one cancelled that's been there (unused) since Nov of 2006. I'm blocked in and was told I was SOL. A clear case of griefing may be different.

I thought that you couldn't be blocked in because spaces adjacent to existing islands were automatically reserved.

Either way, surely you would only need to outbid him on the reservation auction, not pay US$300.

If they are still honouring reservations then, can we add new ones again? Is this policy change documented somewhere? Or is it just a case of they are too busy to go and delete the expired reservations, so they'll let them continue to exist indefinately?

You can't reserve a space directly next to an existing island, but you can reserve spaces on the diagonal, which shuts down existing region expansion. He's had this reservation since the Great Island Land Rush of 2006 when they were raising prices.

There is no documentation that I could find. Des linked to a blog post that stated all old reservations would be let go after 3 months - this was apparently changed without documentation (according to concierge support.)

Hmm, That's strange. But It wouldn't be the first time policy has changed without notice. :)
