From: Clarissa Lowell If you want a short av but to look adult I'd say - makeup (if female) or facial hair (if male) would help. Body proportions of an adult. I've known people who wanted their av to be petite like they were in RL and made their av their RL height or very close to it. But, they had grownup proportions, hairstyle, and makeup, etc. (Shoes also count) Yeah, the problem with that is he already has the fur all over, being a wolf. *grin* (this also makes proportions slightly harder to define) Aaanyway, after some hours fiddling, he's now 1.7m tall compared to a prim, 40-odd extra notches on the height scale, which is still shorter than the vast majority of human avs (but seems to be less of an outlier for furries).. and the proportions look a bit better too. Also finally got around to finding a nice AO instead of the duck walk, and the vastly reduced clumsiness seems to help a bit too I don't think anyone is likely to mistake him for a child while he's dressed 'normally': http://www.wolfpuppy.org.uk/temp/Snapshot_002.png - dunno that there's a lot I can do about any outfit that includes his diapers though Thanks for comments, folks.

From: Clarissa Lowell a shortish av with a frilly babydoll dress and ponytails might be flagged as a child av, if the sim is worried (and they could lose their sim, so I can't blame any of them). Solution, change av or change clothes if going to a Mature sim. shrug I'm curious, I've heard this stated before (risk of losing sim) but can someone point to an actual instance of this occurring (or being directly threatened) where there wasn't a blatant issue of presenting/encouraging/catering to underage sexualization, particularly in cases of visitors, and not sim owners/renters? I'm familiar with "that playground that made the news" but it doesn't fit the bill of not being obvious. are there any direct policy statements that would imply owner/renter responsibility in patrolling for such? or is the policy directed only at participants? anyone? a lil help?

My 5ft 6in RL measurement translates to about 5ft 11ins by SL measurements. To me it's obvious that the SL foot and inch are slightly smaller than the RL ones. It's not us, it's the measurements! I am probably a little under the average height for an adult female avatar, but there are plenty who are smaller than me. On the other hand I never wear stilettos, just flat shoes or slightly raised heels, so I that often makes me look a bit shorter. I once met a realistic adult male dwarf avatar - he definitely couldn't be mistaken for a child, though. I was once at an event where there were some child avatars (girls in long party dresses) who were behaving OK and seemed to be with their SL parents. However, when I checked one of their profiles they belonged so several very 'adult' groups. My guess was that this was an oversight and that they probably used an adult avatar sometimes.

this is a joke, yes? im in-world now. come tell me i look like a child. From: Clarissa Lowell Obviously, ponytails, frilly dresses, short pants, etc. are gonna mark the av as a child no matter what the profile says. Sometimes the teen/tween looking avs are a hard call...a shortish av with a frilly babydoll dress and ponytails might be flagged as a child av, if the sim is worried (and they could lose their sim, so I can't blame any of them). Solution, change av or change clothes if going to a Mature sim. shrug

From: Kokoro Fasching I'm 1.2 meters tall (4'1" , but I have been visited by the titty fairy. Someone should make a tee shirt out of this. From: Toy LaFollette for the most part my child av friends and myself wouldnt be found dead in a strip bar.... its just common sense. I think it's fair to say that the whole problem begins with child av players who don't share your common sense. I reported a child av on an adult sim recently because the player had quite accurately managed to achieve the look of a small, prepubescent boy and was clearly going all out to swing himself a little ageplay. The sim owner rejected my complaint on the grounds that the av was tattooed so I guess it just goes to show how different people use different criteria. Personally, I would never categorise a child av on the basic feature of height because everybody knows how there are short people in the world and how they got little hands and little eyes and walk around tellin' great big lies. We also need to be on the lookout for them for very different reasons.

Actually, I rather think it's us. LL are pretty clear how tall a metre is: it's precisely twice as tall as a default cube prim. There is no "SL foot and inch". The residents who create tall avatars are the ones responsible for height inflation.

I've been told by some that my shortest avatar is an adult. I've been told by some that my tallest avatar is a child. Regardless, I assert neither. I refuse to assert an age of any sort. I simply go by height. The client limitations won't let me get any shorter than my short shape, and I refuse to become a proportionally warped amazonian frankenslut in order to appease some narrow minded loon that wants to hold ME to THEIR flawed personal image standards. (>_< Where is it in "Your world. Your imagination." does it say "Everyone must accept my bubble of appearance!"? (>_< Really... Height police: go away. Give this the unimportance it deserves or be consistent and join in on the international campaign against masturbation. (=_=)

My avatar is five foot six, just like i am in rl, my kids are all shorter and my sl husband is taller, just as he is in rl also. (the kids are obviously taller in rl : PPP )
a few years ago, my sl son and I were kicked out of a place for being sl kids, and it REALLY pissed us off. so now we both focus on making places that are kid friendly in SL.

The fact of the matter is that our avatars are all just a few inches tall on our computer screens. They will never be the RL height they are said to be. When you look at a gathering of avatars in SL your mind interprets the scene the same as if it were looking at youtube video of people in real life. Now how do you tell the height of all people in that video? You don't measure them with a ruler, you don't whip out a script to measure everyone, you LOOK at them and their surroundings. Have you ever stood next to a correctly proportional home in SL? It's tiny! Anyone over 6 feet tall will feel like giants if they can even get in the front door. My point is that you rarely see a proportionally sized structure in SL. Everything is oversized. When people LOOK at their surrounding they adjust their size accordingly and normalize their avatars to the surroundings. If you rail against people who are oversized you are railing against basic human nature.
I'm not saying this because I'm against short people. I have a rather small avatar too. I think the only way to solve any problems here is to start making RL proportional styled buildings and furniture. LL could also just adjust their scale to change everything from 1m to 1.5m.

From: Bree Giffen ...If you rail against people who are oversized you are railing against basic human nature... My human nature told me "This looks nice and proportionate" when I completed my shape. My awareness of measurements came after, when people started laying a guilt trip on me for not complying with THEIR warped point of view. (T_T) That said. Railing against tall avatars can only scratch their thin skin. Railing against short avatars leads to account suspensions and terminations. Which is the lesser of two evils here? (T_T)

I'm not sure if it's the physics engine or how the client camera is configured but RL-proportioned builds just don't work comfortably: I found that even a room with 3.5m high walls is too tight for comfortable camera movement.

I see no reason people can't have 'short' adult avs, but I can see too why some sims would err on the side of caution as someone put it. My Avatar is 5'4", and I've never been mistaken for a child. My proportions are normal, I have adult hair and makeup, and boobs...that seems to make a difference.

I've always tended to set my avi height to the same as the folks I hang out with, which puts me at around 7ft. I don't think height has anything to do with ageplay though. Just take a look at the Lindens themselves. When I worked the SL5B I was surprised that most all Lindens were little people.

As soon as someone, in SL or RL, steps over the line with me by making rude comments about my avatar or RL appearance, end of conversation. In SL, I can instantly mute/ban. In RL, I turn my back and walk away. The whole height issue in SL boggles my mind. It's a bit of a button with me anyway because I have worked with, and do have friends, who are dwarfs. I couldn't imagine getting in my friends' face and commenting on their height, unless my friend or co-worker brought it up. It's one thing if a kid makes a rude comment about height because they may not know better, but adults should know at least a few rules of etiquette and have enough manners to keep their trap shut. Human beings come in all shapes and sizes in RL. Too many avatars, in my opinion, are too alike in appearance.

I set myself at just below average height on the slider when I first joined (which I think is about 5'5" , because I'm short in real life. I'm actually shorter than that, but I guessed (correctly) that people would probably set themselves taller than they are. And I've remained the same size ever since I left the Orientation Island where I set myself that tall. What I didn't expect was it would make me shorter than almost everyone else in SL! coco

Yup, that should be correct. The average height in RL is much lower than it is in SL. I would have thought actually that most short people want to be tall in SL. I am the opposite. I am tall in RL but short in SL, and I love it.

i dont think its that easy. i am far from an expert, but i have herd very geeky types discuss such a thing and the impact it would have on physics calculations involving mass, density, velocity, etc. besides, what youre really suggesting is for ll to 'scale up' measurements, thus forcing me to grow in order to accommodate the giants, which is annoying to me. From: Bree Giffen LL could also just adjust their scale to change everything from 1m to 1.5m.

Lizzie Hi Liz... yes i started on your island pretty much my first day in SL and I'm still there. Moreover, I'm still the 5' 11" I've always been since Robin did my first makeover and gave me the AV Ruler. And yes, these longleggedy giants drive me crazy too. We didn't have that problem in 2006. One thing to add: One friend I've known a couple years, Abigail Masala, started a group called Normal Height and Proud. I was her first victim... er ... customer. hehe. Seriously, I'm not sure but I think it's up to a couple hundred members.
