Semi Transparent Flying Balls

I've been noticing for the last few weeks balls that are transparent but you can see their shape as the whiz past or over your head. I'm seeing these in lots of places and wondering what they are. I've tried watching where the come from and getting in their way and can't figure it out (my attention span isn't quite long enough). Any ideas?

I saw something like this a year or more ago at Siggy's Waterworld, they persisted for several days. I vaguely recall something on the forums about them being griefer objects that had been turned loose in several places throughout SL.
