How would residents STRUCTURE the forums?

Nika Talaj and I met with Robin Linden about resMods for the forums (see /327/28/233763/1.html), during which several proposals for forum restructuring also arose. We volunteered to solicit forum-dweller input on these and any other ideas for changes to the structure of the forums.

1. Tidying up and pruning deadwood (e.g., "Linden Links" currently atop the forum tree). (SuezanneC Baskerville, /327/4a/234101/3.html#post1828402)

2. A sculpties content forum. (SuezanneC Baskerville, https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-135).

3. Forum for JIRA issue discussions. (Meade Paravane, https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-224).

(/me pauses to savor the techno-postmodernism of this forum thread about a jira for a forum to discuss jiras. Crunchy goodness!)

4. Linking discussions of the Official Blog with forum threads (e.g., Andrew Linden thread stemming from a Havoc 4 blog entry).

Comments? Other ideas?

I'd like to see a new sub forum for the people that are obsessed with moderating and controlling the forums. It'll be a nice place for them to console eachother and discuss about how exposed and vulnerable they feel without a resmod around.

We can call the new forum "Pussies Hangout" or something. Yeah, sounds lovely.

Maybe a truly discursive forum that doesnt require a serious nature - but which leads to expanded knowledge of sl?

A forum for Role Playing - The games forum is not really for this group.

I love cutting up deadwood. Have had a lot of practice with it chasing men with my chain saw around the xcite IM when they cant get their prims to work.. It's so cute when I take them home with me and tell them to have a seat in the chair by the fresh pool of blood on the floor. One even ran his finger threw it and asked me if it was a close friend :)

Pie - random throwing at random people
Pie Discussion - color, taste, makeup etc
Pie Baking - discussion the actual ingridients to make the pies you like
Pie Linden - restrict linked blog comments to this forum and only allow Pie Linden to blog
Pie Analysis - hardware discussion when your pie didn`t turn into a pie but a pile

I like your ideas, Qie!

The only idea that I have is probably not a good one, but maybe I'd move the technical talk forums up into Resident Conversation, so that newbies aren't going to be casting all over the entire forum looking for help. Or, maybe move RA down to Technical Help? Whichever, I'd like to see the two areas combined. Just my L$2 and it's probably a dumb idea. :o

I'd like to see a Business section. Maybe subdivided into a few major groups such as, Real Estate, Clothiers, Home& Garden, etc...

A place where we can discuss (not just post) SL business related topics. :-)

3. Forum for JIRA issue discussions. (Meade Paravane, https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-224)

My friend Meade also harped for a while about having a triage group to limit LLs load on supporting Linden Answers. Though that sub-forum is long dead, I still think it's a good idea..

I'd sort posts by avatar height.

Some place to talk about business & the economy. Current version feedback rarely has any relevance to what we want to discuss. Stats, trends, land prices, etc.

I think that is a great idea!
Put "Technical Answers" right below "Resident Answers"

Add the Business forum idea to Isablan's layout, in the Resident Support area.

Otherwise, two thumbs up!

I'd add a General Discussion Forum for starters. =)

Isablan's layout is awesome, with Cristalle and Lindal's Business section put in as well. The current way that it's all sectioned up is really confusing, and 99% of the time I completely forget about Technical Answers. RA can be the section for general societal questions ("How much to tip?";) etc.

Actually, to be totally honest, I would scrap the Answers Forum as it serves no useful purpose that I can see. It just seems to be the new General Forum.

Even the FIC abanded this forum long ago.

I think Isablan's list is great except for the following things:

1. Gotta add a General Discussions forum. Let's get a place to really whoop it up!

2. I don't think having a separate forum for Resident Answers and Technical Answers is a good idea. I think it would just confuse noobs where to post. I'm not even sure where the line would be drawn myself. Just make it simple all in one.

Other than that it's excellent!

Well, I think its safe to say that if LL put in the effort to restructure the forums, they would first fix the moderation situation. Which would result in an RA that is more focussed, although if the new mods are smart some general interest threads would still be left to run.

I think Isablan's outline is really neat, with some of the additions others have mentioned as well.

Does anyone know what the original intent of the Technical Issues forum was?

I wonder if Technical Issues should be replaced by a "Developers" forum? They have the sldev list of course, but would a BB format help them for some discussions? Kitty? Matthew?

I'm beginning to see the forums as a communications hub that ties together several other outreach methods - blog, jira, and maybe developers too?

Ah yes, make Technical Issues the Developers' forum. That way all the smart people could talk together without worrying about answering newbie questions, and newbies would shy right clear of that forum, and come to us here in either RA or TA (Technical Answers). Why not make RA, instead of GD, something like "Social Answers?" That way, we'd have Social Answers and Technical Answers right next to each other in the listings, and newbies would post in either one. I'm sure there would be overflow from one to the other, but that's fine; that's what we're here for.

It seems as if Technical Answers is kind of the Windows analog to the Mac and Linux fora, plus network-related stuff. So, perhaps RA could be (renamed and) meant to address in-world topics, and Technical Answer to be about client/network stuff. But I'm not sure if that's an important distinction to make or not.

? are you being sarcastic? I meant developers as in "open source" developers, pulling in a community of folks nearly all of whom aren't here at all now. In fact, it might benefit RA, in that developers might glance over there and contribute some more expert answers. Maybe even some glimpses into future development.

Perhaps a better name for it would be "Open Source Development".

No no totally not sarcastic. Sorry if you took it that way, honey. ;) I was just agreeing with you and explaining that the open-sourcers probably get tired of "how do I set up streaming music?" when all those types of questions are better answered here.

[Edit: When I said "smart people" I obviously didn't mean me. :o ]

/me votes for the name 'resident sandbox' even though it's not entirely the right term.
