Of course for the really bothersome ones, I'll join, then post URL's in group chat to the local funny farm.. then I am ejected from the group. This way, they get the hint that I didn't want to want to be there in the first place.

Re the dear thing- i do that at times, use dear- i guess it depends on context too- i did it not long ago to someone took it as a condescending tone. So further lesson to me to limit the dears.

I don't see anything remotely condescending about "dear." Must be different cultures and generations. It's a fair choice - not gender specific necessarily, at least in my part of the world.

"Sir" is what I dislike. Makes me feel as old as I am.

This is off-topic. But ...

In real life, when a stranger calls you "dear," it's almost always with the intent of being condescending.

In Second Life, the throwaway use of "dear" is so widespread, I wonder whether it is being used with a purpose at all, or if people are calling everyone "dear" because they see so many other Second Life residents doing it, and thing calling everyone "dear" is part of the culture and necessary to fit in.

I used to go through our sales list, inviting anyone that bought something from us to our customer group. I got one threat of an AR, and then posted to RA to get opinions. The majority said that they thought it was rude to do, but not against the TOS, so I stopped immediately and haven't started again. We want to get repeat customers and coming over as pushy or rude isn't something we want. We put out a board to get an invite, but the rate of joining dropped considerably as a result. Oh well.

As for the "dear" thing - yes, that and being called "honey", "hon" or "hun" really gets my back up. If I were a violent person I would be bitch-slapping them... good job I'm not ;)

Well, I have put her on factual notice now that I do not wish to join her group. I happen to have had this conversation through IM to email, so I have a record. The next time it happens (which will be the third time), I'm going to be extremely unhappy and will probably do exactly that.

There's also an option in the: preferences, communication-tab , to log all IM's and even local chat to your computer, not sure if its "on" by default ?

Guilty of that one too at times.

Well if you mute her, would you get a group invite request from her?
Hm, interesting question. Anyone know the answer to that?

Yes. Muting does *not* stop group invites. Here's the feature request on JIRA:

I remember a friend getting mad at a snobby waiter at a restraunt once, the waiter kept calling him "sir" ... finely my friend said "and stop calling me sir, because when you say sir, it rhymes with cur" ....

Bit off topic, but do you have a clicky group sign up thing at the store?

I love your items and your sims and would like to join.

I've found hanging out there is about as close as you can get in SL to visiting old rural Japan without actualy flying back.... tough I really should go visit my cousins again.

Funnily enough, I don't like "Sir" either. Pisses me when subs in some of the more louche sims try to get my attention with that.

I typically use "Canım" for men, women and children including complete strangers like taxi drivers and waiters. It roughly translates as "My Life" but it carries much the same meaning as "My Darling". I even caught myself using it on a tortoise only this morning as I tempted him over to a fresh patch of dandelions.

It was quite heartening to hear that Jordanian spy in "Body of Lies" doing the same (with Leonardo DiCaprio not a tortoise). They softened it to "my dear" though, which brings us back to square one I suppose.

It's not unusual in my neck of the woods. Mind you, it's also not unusual for straight fellas to walk around arm in arm, which they could get AR'd for in many other parts of the world.

It does depend on the context. But, trust me, in that IM HoneyBear quoted, the writer was displaying hostility (which is the category into which condescension falls), not affection.
