If you are a programmer, who understands SL viewer code, you can always examine the source and see what it's doing. If you're not, you can look around for some programmer who already HAS examined the source.
It's what they do.
As has been stated here several times, the proprietary closed code are the same files that exist in SL's viewer code. You can always transfer them from SL's install folder to the new viewers install folder.
And I have heard that there are some hinky third party viewers out there, and trying to pass themselves off as legit viewers. So, it's important to be sure to do your downloads from trusted sites--that is, the programmers site.
On the other hand, if you don't trust third party viewers, don't use them. It's that easy.

From: Lyla Tunwarm Apparently I don't as in the 15 years I have used the internet I have yet to have one issue with ID theft or money loss.. All my bills are paid over the net, I do considerable shopping over the net and have used SL and various other online games and still have zero issues.
Experiences are worthless if a new idea comes up

From: Argent Stonecutter Apparently not. I was under the impression that you were concerned about a potential problem and wanted to find out how to resolve your concern one way or another. Obviously I was mistaken.

There are manipulated and pro-coded viewers with some neat extras (see my last thread) that do not only break the TOS- they really fuck up the TOS - but I am not talking about those non-public viewers. You can find enough information about what can happen to you if you download and install viewers not from the original websites (if there is one)

From: Sony Swords See, you think and act like a coder. Friend, what say you actually explain precisely what you're getting at here, instead of dropping half-completed thoughts through half-completed sentences and expecting us to figure out what you mean through ectoplasmic osmosis? PS: to help you with your small animal identification in the future, here's a rabbit, hamster, cat, and dog:

I'll try to state it in simple english:
Linden Lab uses some closed source libraries in the viewer. So every viewer based on their code, has to use those too.
You can use the ones Emerald is giving you, or the ones from LL's official release. Either should work.
They are for the voice functions (proprietary to Vivox), and for a faster way of doing jpeg2000 compression/decompression (KDU). I don't recall what the 3rd is for.
They are not required, but suggested.

From: Viktoria Dovgal Did you turn off the "clothing layer protection" in the preferences, Emerald->Shields tab? And that hides that you are using Emerald? What is this option supposed to do anyway?

From: Sony Swords my friend, I understand you - relax Good, now if you'd just stop dropping incoherent fragments of text in as if they meant something, we'd both understand each other.

i believe it causes the viewer to send a baked skin/clothing layer rather than sending the layers seperately. it may be moot however, as the latest ll viewers have this functionality built in. From: Love Hastings And that hides that you are using Emerald? What is this option supposed to do anyway?

From: Love Hastings And that hides that you are using Emerald? What is this option supposed to do anyway? It hides that you are using emerald due to the rumor mill that spouts Emerald is bad, and all those good things. For people that enjoy Emerald, but don't want to deal with the idiots that run off half-cocked with wrong information and start a huge ordeal over nothing, or accuse them of being thieves, or all the other wonderful dumbsh*t that people will come up with. ~Brie

Curious about the Emerald Viewer and all the features? http://modularsystems.sl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=24&Itemid=16

~Brie Thats right. The only way to remove dust and rumors is talking in public. To make it more clear,,,, If you want to rock on concert - sing public on stage and in the limelights. I would not name the ppl half-cocked nor stupid if they still do not trust the whole system. Trust need to be earned. Only half-cocked idiots run into shit - and this pretty quickly. ..

From: Love Hastings And that hides that you are using Emerald? What is this option supposed to do anyway? The normal viewer attaches a cluster of unbaked clothing textures to your avatar. If for some reason your own viewer fails to get a baked version of your avatar up to the server, other viewers can use those to generate a local version. With the protection turned on, the unbaked textures are replaced by a substitute, others can only see what your avatar looks like if your bake succeeds. The viewer ID thing works by looking at what substitute image was used. Since the scheme is simple and completely voluntary, it's also easy to fake. It's great for "oh neat, you're running that too!" and totally useless as proof that someone is using a particular client.
