Noobie: Buying Linden Dollars

I guess I'm looking for some insight about buying Linden dollars.

I purchased my monthly limit of $L from the SL Buy$L web site last week. Yesterday, I rented a property that cost me just about all of what I had in my account. So I need more $L to buy stuff for my new place.

Since I purchased my monthly limit of $L last week, I can't purchase any more through the Linden Exchange. Is there a way around this? I'm in a paradox: my rent almost equals my monthly limit, which doesn't leave me any $L to furnish my place.

Thanks

you have to wait. or camp somewhere and earn the $L while you wait for your limit to rise.

You can buy L$ through AKA SLX. Anshe Chung has a website too but I'm not sure what it is, might be something like www.anshechung.com, LOL. Do NOT, repeat do NOT buy L$ through eBay.

Try http://www.slexchange.com - you should be able to buy them there....

If your general knowledge is any good there's many a linden to be had playing trivia around sl.

What I would not recommend is buying your lindens outside sl. I did - it was a disaster.

When I was new and maxed out my trading limit with LL, I bought L$ from Ansche. They were expensive, but you pay for the convenience. She, SLX and a few others are 'licensed' or whatever by LL as currency traders. They use the 'risk.api' which is what LL uses to decide if someone's currency dealings are safe or not. eBay sellers and other unofficial dealings are frowned on it seems.

SLX are good but they have their own delays for new users, 3 days I think.

I think that was the information I was looking for. Has anyone had any problems with using SL Exchange for buying $L?

There are some safe places like SL Exchange and Anshe Chung, most other places will not have gone through the risk API.

Heh, frowned on :) People can get permanently banned for buying Lindens from ebay and non-licensed dealers.

And yes, SLX has delays, and limits. You can't buy more than a certain amount on SLX (certain USA dollar amount), unless you use a different type of paypal (commercial/business?), because of fraud concerns.

Yes I shouldnt tar everyone with the same brush but as they say once bitten twice shy.

I must admit Im a tad confused as to SLX s relation to Lindens I always thought it was part of the Lindens company.

As far as I know, the SLexchange is a separate entity. Granted, I keep seeing it in my mind as either "sexchange" or "sex exchange", but that is a different issue.

When using SL Exchange, how long does it take for the $L to appear in your account? How does it get there?

Thanks

The process with SLX is 3 steps I believe (have never done this myself).

1) Put US$ in your SLX account, using paypal etc.
2) Buy L$ on SLX's currency exchange with the US$ that you have in your SLX account.
This puts L$ in your SLX account.
3) Withdraw the L$ from your SLX account to your SL account.

Unrelated companies, they just happen to use LL's Risk API, which is what makes it 'safe.'

The exchange rate is frequently a bit better on SLX, if you don't mind the extra steps. I'm lazy, so I usually just hit the LindeX button in-world. :)

I think it's actually just hta it takes a little time to change. I did the same thing, but my limit went up before anything happened with the ticket. I closed it myself

I am in the process of bringing a RL business into SL and filed a ticket to get my limit raised. After waiting for almost a month I purchased the L$ I needed via SLExchange and had no issues at all.

Shameless Plug:
You can find an SL Exchange ATM in-world at my store:
** Giftable Creations **, Welcome Center (124, 231, 21)

28 days. :)

It should be noted that these limits are cumulative...if you spend $10 on day 1, you actually only have $40 available for days 2-13 and, if you've spent $50 by the end of day 13, you have $100 to last through day 27.

Information on Billing and Trading Limits is available in the blue left hand column of the account page, under the 'Commerce' header.

Most people I know use SLExchange over the Lindex because if you are dealing in moderate volume (L$10,000 or more) the exchange rate is generally slightly better whether you are buying or selling. How fast it works depends on your bid/ask price. Unlike Lindex, SLExchange is an actual currency market for L$ and US$. If you are willing to bid at a price listed as "immediately" available for sale then your transaction will usually process within a day although I have heard some instances where it can take 2 or more days.

Slim,
I've never had a problem with SLX and I use them regularly. You do have to verify your avatar in world at an SLX ATM machine, after setting up an account on the website. It's easy peasy. Once you get all set up and past SLX's own waiting period, transferring money from your online account to your inworld avatar is instantaneous.

Of course, if you have a RL friend who's beyond the one-month waiting period, you could hand them a few bucks and get them to send you L$ inworld.

So, once you complete a transaction in SL Ex, using the purchase at best price immediately option, and once the status on the order says "Filled," then how long should it take for the $L to appear in my SL account? Is there another step I have to complete?

Thanks

1. Have you registered your avatar with an SLX ATM machine inworld. This is absolutely necessary.

2. You can WITHDRAW L$ from either the ATM or online at the website. Simply select 'withdraw L$' and it will get sent to your inworld avatar account in about 30 seconds.

I'm finished with all the setup and registration. And I used PayPal to put $USD into my SL Ex account. Then I put in a request to buy $L at the best immediate price and send it to my avatar's account. I confirmed the request. Then I checked the status of the order and it tells me that the order has been filled.

HOWEVER, it's been two hours since the order was filled and when I log into the SL website and look at my account, I'm still not showing an increase in the $L in my account. I must have missed some step, I'm thinkin. How does the money get from SL Ex to SL and into my account there? How long should I expect it to take?

Go to the website. Look on the left hand side under My SLX. What does your SL Balance read? If it's full of L$, then click the small "withdraw" under the balance amount; this will send money to you inworld. If it's empty, and you've already sent money to your avatar, I would contact the SLX staff and explain what's going on. We can't help you with technical issues.
